WELCOME TO THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITIES OF
Deacon Steve Tabor Phone: 503.769.8089
“Rules”
We have all heard the Ten Commandments many times, and
many people can recite them by heart. But there are of course
many other rules and laws which have been put into effect over
the course of human history. The Code of Hammurabi is one of
the oldest Codes we have in written form, dating to the 1700s
B.C., and contains 282 laws. Many experts say that there of 613
laws in the Old Testament - although I personally haven’t counted
them. The Code of Cannon Law contains 1,752 canons. Federal
and State laws no doubt reach into the tens of thousands.
We can’t know the future for certain, but it’s a good bet that
more laws will be passed and there will be more rules for us to
follow, all with the intent of governing society in a manner which
those in power deem proper. Unfortunately those in power do not
always have the wisdom of Solomon, nor the best interest of the
least fortunate at heart, and thus we can end up with laws that in
fact make life unnecessarily more difficult for those who need the
most help.
Jesus and his disciples, and all Jewish people, were faced with
many rules and regulations passed down by the “tradition of the
elders”. Clearly Jesus felt that it was not necessary to follow
some of these rules. Washing hands before eating makes practi-
cal sense for good hygiene, but apparently Jesus figured it didn’t
matter too much in the big scheme of things. In the end, Jesus
boiled it all down to two laws: Love God, and love your neighbor.
It can be easy to become rule followers, and find in the follow-
ing of the rules a sense of pride and satisfaction. It is important to
us to know we are “doing things right”. One lesson from the life
of Jesus as shown in today’s gospel is that following the rules for
the rules own sake does not make us more holy, nor more worthy
of God’s love for us. Deacon Steve Tabor

Vicariate Faith Formation - Follow Up From Alpha There was such amazing community participation during the Alpha series in the spring that it will continue this fall with a
new program. The program is from Bishop Robert Barron and is called, “Conversion”. In this film and study program, Bishop Barron illuminates six biblical stories of conversion, demonstrating how six ordinary people, just like you, were
met by Jesus where they were and called to a better life through him. The common theme in each story is the turning of all one's attention and energy toward an ever deeper, per-sonal relationship with Jesus Christ. The series will run on
Thursdays from Thursday, September 20th – Thursday, Octo-ber 25th and each week will go from 5:30 – 7:00 pm in the
Immaculate Conception Parish Center. Dinner and child-care will be provided! This is a great way to invite others to explore faith in their lives so please invite others to join us no matter their religious beliefs. To find out more or to rsvp
please call the parish office or email [email protected]. You can also follow the group on Facebook

The Sacrament of Confirmation is an amazing opportunity in our faith
journey! I know in my own life, it was Confirmation prep my senior
year that not only created a love for the Church that has lasted my en-
tire life , but also where I discovered that I wanted to be a Youth Di-
rector. Now, as a 44 year-old woman, I continue to love serving the
Church. Many parents have asked me how to instill in their kids the
importance of maintaining their Catholic identity. One answer I have
is to encourage more active participation when they are teen-
agers. For this reason, myself, and more importantly, the Archdiocese
of Portland, Confirmation is a two year program. Beginning this year,
our Confirmation program is open to high school students age 14 -18
as a two year program. Most other parishes in the area, including all
of the Salem area parishes, have adopted this method and have done it
for at least for the last 5-8 years. Any parents of teens interested in being Confirmed this year, please attend the Mandatory Parent/teen meeting at Immaculate Conception Church on Sunday, Sep-tember 9th from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the hall. Both parent and teen are asked to attend the meeting together. (Complete details may be
found on the flyer in the vestibule of church). The Thursday noon faith formation group is starting back up
with the first meeting on Thursday, September 6th at noon in the
Immaculate Conception Parish Center. The group will start a pro-
gram called “Presence: The Mystery of the Eucharist”. The 3 week
program explores the truth and beauty of Christ’s real presence in
the Eucharist, from its origins in Sacred Scripture, to its profound
role in the life of the Church and her members. It is the crescendo
of the entire story of salvation. Join us! Lunch is provided at no
cost. Please call the parish office for more information.
