That happened to the disciples one day in the presence of Jesus. It was not Judas saying to one of his companions about Jesus, ‘’I’m getting sick and tired of his holier than thou attitude.’’ No, it was a debate among the apostles. They were arguing about who was the most important. Instinc- tively they realized their debate was so distasteful to Jesus that when he asked them about it they simply fell silent! The amazing thing about their argument is that Jesus had just taught them that he was going to be delivered into the hands of men who would put him to death. As the humble servant of his Father he was willing to under go death in contrast to those whose only thought was to rise to prominence and power. He said to the apostles, ‘’If anyone wishes to rank first, he must re- main the last one of all and the servant of all.’’ The disciples failed to understand Jesus’ words. No wonder. God’s values are upside down as far as secular standards are con- cerned. And so Jesus resorted to an example which was a favor- ite with him. In a very touching scene he took a child and put his arms around that fortunate youth and said, ‘’Whoever welcomes a child such as this for my sake welcomes me.’’ Children are the living example of the humility and simplicity we are called to practice. There is an age when humility and simplicity lead most children to take it for granted in the best sense that they are love- able. Usually this age is before they go to school and enter into the world of competition! For whatever the situation in the com- petitive, dare we say ‘’cut throat,’’ world, we need to recognize God’s system of values. We have to remember that we are chil- dren of the perfect Father who indeed loves us for who we are. We must never doubt that his love for us is the source of our worth and our value. Fr. Paul

St. Mary’s Shaw, Tuesday, Sept. 25th. 2018 Development of the New Testament Canon

The canon of the New Testament is the twenty-seven books Christians regard as divinely inspired. We will discuss: How

the first Christian books were written, preserved, and col-lected. Why some books were accepted and others excluded

from canon. And how and when the canon was finally closed. The discussion will be led by Dennis Rose.

The Archdiocese is mandating a mandatory training for all volunteers and employee of the archdioceses. This is
