Friday, November 1st, was the Solemnity of All Saints. This is a Holy Day in the life of the Church. This Solemnity of All Saints is a celebration of all those who have, as St. Paul says, "fought the good fight and received the crown of glory." In reality, a saint is only someone who now lives with God. It is a day to commemorate all those saints that have their names listed in the official books of the Church, but also all those who names are not officially recognized. Maybe members of our families who have lived faithfully to Jesus and are now part of the Kingdom. This feast reminds us of all those who have gone before us, and as we hear in the Book of Revelation "have been through the great persecution and have washed their robes white again in the blood of the Lamb." The call to sanctity is the invitation offered to all believers through Baptism. Our journey or pilgrimage on earth is to work for our entrance into heaven. We strive to follow the Gospel of Jesus and live according to His will so that the promise of Eternal Life may be our reward for a faith-filled and holy life. The Gospel reading for All Saints day, the Beatitudes are a good "road map" if you will to live out that journey. Blessed are the meek, the peacemakers, those who hunger for justice, the merciful, the pure in heart...they are the face of God. The Solemnity of All Saints is a good reminder to us...have we spent our time and energy seeking out the Kingdom here that we may be part of that Kingdom in the world to come? It’s never too late to become a saint. You can begin today, go to confession, be freed from the sins of the past. Let nothing hold you back...and today hear the voice of Jesus and come follow Him in a new and deeper way. It really isn't that difficult with the power of the Holy Spirit. And you never know... one day we may celebrate your feast day. The Rectory porch is just about completed. It is now structurally safe and no longer an eye sore. All the material are man made and require no additional maintenance. This will ensure little future cost for the parish to maintain and will look good for years to come. A family in the parish, who would like to remain anonymous, asked if they could give as a gift, landscaping in front of the Rectory. It looks beautiful, simple and elegant. I am very grateful to them for their graciousness and generosity. This past week, two of our parishioners were honored by the Diocese for their ministry. Michelle Hagen was awarded the Pope John XXIII Medal for 25 years of service as a catechist. This is a great milestone and I am very grateful for all that Michelle does for the young people in our Religious Education Program. Scott Whitting was given the St Agnes Diocesan Medal. This medal is awarded to parishioners for their service to the Diocesan and Parish. Scott is an active member of the parish and like so many, is very generous with his Time, Talent and Treasure to the parish and diocese. On behalf of the parish, I would like to offer my sincerest and grateful congratulations to both of them. A reminder that October is the month of the Rosary. Use this powerful prayer form to bring you closer to Jesus through the intercession of Our Lady. In Jesus and Mary, Fr. Bob

Sunday, November 3 “Mercy that is truly Christian is also the most perfect incarnation of ‘equality’ between people,” wrote Pope John Paul II in his encyclical Rich in Mercy. Our compassion compels us to see the dignity of persons in need. They become lovable simply because they are. Despite any faults, poor choices, weaknesses, or circumstances beyond their control, those in need are worthy of alms (from the Greek word for mercy)—for Christ’s sake. Strive to see in others what Jesus saw in tax collectors, sinners, and the least among us: the face of God. Monday, November 4 Memorial of St. Charles Borromeo, bishop Saint Charles Borromeo was an instrument of the Holy Spirit in helping to keep the church on course through needed reforms in the 16th century. Had he been a participant in the Second Vatican Council rather than the Council of Trent, he may have contributed to the former council’s similar insight: “Christ summons the church, as she goes her pilgrim way, to that continual reformation of which she always has need. If . . . there have been deficiencies in moral conduct or in church discipline, . . . these should be set right at the opportune moment and in the proper way” (Decree on Ecumenism). Tuesday, November 5 In some Middle Eastern countries, it is customary to send two sets of invitations when a banquet is planned, one before the feast and the other on the day of the event when a servant is dispatched to announce that everything is ready. A bit of theater is involved, as guests may at first reject the invitation so they can be urged to accept. The host is thereby given the “privilege” of compelling them to come. Scenes like that play out in various stories in the Bible, with the host of the banquet representing the Lord. The message? That’s the kind of God we have, one who is willing not once but repeatedly to invite you to the heavenly banquet. Now is the time to accept! Wednesday, November 6 Millions of people worldwide use social media. As never before in history it’s possible to connect quickly and directly with people thousands of miles away; it’s as if they’re right next door. Pope Benedict XVI, the first pope to join Twitter, spoke about the implications of having a world of neighbors: “Today the means of mass communication have made our planet smaller,

6 rapidly narrowing the distance between different peoples. . . . Our ability to know almost instantly about the needs of others challenges us to share their situation and their difficulties. . . . Our times call for a new readiness to assist our neighbors . . . .” In our prayers and actions, how will we extend love and service to our neighbors across the globe today? Thursday, November 7 For Roman Christians in the Early Church, controversy swirled around the observance of Jewish food laws. Emotions ran high on both sides—those who felt the laws should be observed and those who felt freed from the old strictures. Saint Paul took no side. Instead he asks, “Why then do you judge your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.” Sound familiar? Pope Francis had a similar response regarding those who are often marginalized in our day: “If they accept the Lord and have goodwill,” said Francis, “who am I to judge them?” Embrace your brothers and sisters and keep the judgments to God. Friday, November 8 When you hear the word stewardship in church, you might start bracing yourself for the appeal for money that usually follows! But good stewardship is about much more. It means being faithful to your relationship with the one who has entrusted you with all the riches in your life—your talents, health and energy, your loved ones and livelihood. Stewardship at root is a relationship of fidelity, of keeping trust with the One who has given you life. Are you ready to put your time, talent, and treasure in service to the gospel? Only then will you be called a good steward. Saturday, November 9 Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica The Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome and one of Catholicism’s four “major” basilicas—all located in Rome—got its name from the ancient Roman family, the Laterani, on whose land it was built. In the Catholic world a basilica is a church building of special significance, but the term ultimately comes from a type of Roman building put up at the government’s expense to house public events. Palestinian Jews adopted this form for the first synagogues, and early Christians in turn used it for services. The next time you’re in a house of worship, remember that just as churches are built on what came before, your faith is part of a temple built on the gospel of Jesus.
