PagE 2 | JunE 17, 2018

Welcome to St. cecilia! Greetings Parishioners of St. Cecilia Catholic Church,

My name is Ryan Alexander Rivera and I am a Seminarian for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. I will be going into my third year of Formation at St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary College in Covington, Louisiana which is a small town west of New Orleans. I am very happy and grateful to be spending my summer assignment at St. Cecilia. I hope to get to know most of you during my two months here. I would like to tell you a little about myself so you can get to know me better.

I was born in Houston, TX on April 12, 1993, and have lived in New Caney, TX for about 18 years. I have an amazing family, two awesome parents and two beautiful sisters, whom I love dearly. I graduated from New Caney High School in 2012. After graduation, I went to Lone Star College in Kingwood, TX where I studied for my four-year degree in Nursing.

From a young age, I always wondered what it would be like to be a priest. I would watch many biblical movies, mostly about the life of Christ, read the Bible, pretend to celebrate Mass. I became an altar server at nine years old. I loved to serve and wanted to serve every Sunday; that’s where I began to have a relationship with God. In the summer of 2015, I began to pray more and attended adoration every day not only to pray but to listen to God to see what my true calling was. I knew I was going the right direction when a good friend gave me a flyer for a Discernment Retreat in December of 2015. I went and it was life-changing. That’s where I felt that God was calling me to become a priest.

I knew that I would have to stop studying nursing because I knew that God still wanted me to help people but in a different and special way. On Christmas Day I told my fam-ily that I was going to apply to the seminary and there were tears of joy and happiness. I have been blessed by their love and support. I applied to the seminary in January of 2016 and now I am a Seminarian for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. I am thankful for the opportunity given by the Office of Vocations and Cardinal DiNardo as I continue my journey towards to becoming a Priest of Jesus Christ.

The weekend of June 30th and July 1st, Father Gerald E. Kelly of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, will speak at all the Masses. Father Kelly has served as a missionary in Chile and he presently guides numerous mission groups to Mexico and Central America for short-term mission experi-ences. He is currently Team leader of Third Wave of Mission for the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers. He will invite us to take part in the vital work of bringing Christ and His Gospel to all people. While at the parish, Fr. Kelly will be happy to talk with parishioners who are interested in doing overseas mission work.
