FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
With the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we formally close the
Christmas season. The baby Jesus is now a grown up man! Ready to start his public
ministry. Ready to begin his long awaited journey to Jerusalem, where he will
manifest and reveal why he came in the first place. The Child-King, who was visited
last Sunday by the Magi in the Feast of the Epiphany, is ready to embrace the cross,
his salvific throne as King. This is the very reason why the Father is “pleased with
him” using the words in the Gospel today.
The baptism of the Lord in the Jordan River was also the beginning of his
active public ministry. After baptism, we saw him boldly preaching the Good News,
curing the sick, etc. This is also what is expected of us of our baptism. Our baptism
carries a huge responsibility of leading a life according to our Christian
commitment. The rich and many symbols of the sacrament of baptism starting from
the asking of the priest of the name of the child which signifies that the person to be
baptized is no longer anonymous, he/she cannot live in darkness anymore without
a clear identity, but is now a child of God. Another powerful symbol in the
baptismal rite is the signing of the cross in which the priest says these words
“(name), the Christian community welcomes you with great joy. In its name I claim
you for Christ our Savior by the sign of his cross”, which powerfully communicates
that we are now of God because that sign is an indelible mark of our incorporation
to Jesus, and to act otherwise, is then to deny our new identity. As baptized, we
walk in this world with that invisible sign of the cross on our forehead, and that
invisible sign is made visible by the way we lead our own lives. How are we living
up to our baptismal commitment? – Fr. Cary

BAR SOAP
After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove, and a voice was heard,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well
pleased.” As we give to the poor, we also can hear
these same words.
As you help those who are suffering, know in
your heart the truth of the words “you are my
beloved in whom I am well pleased.”

In December, the 5th grade from St. Cecilia School did a service project for the St. Cecilia Parish St. Vincent de Paul. We decorated small bags for Christmas and filled them up with candy for children. We used chocolates, Sour Patch, Swedish Fish, granola bars, etc. After we all filled our bags, we made Christmas cards for each family that received the St. Vincent de Paul Christmas food boxes. We decorated them with stars and angels and wrote a Christmas message from the parish inside each card. On December 15, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers delivered the Christmas food boxes, cards and children's candy bags to the families. All in total, the 5th graders made 250 Christmas themed candy bags and 128 Christmas cards. We really enjoyed this experience to help people in need, and we hope to do it again many more times. In the end it really felt great to think about sending Christmas wishes to so many people and to know we had done the type of work that Jesus would have wanted.

Respect Life
Mary Rigert (503) 888-8179
January 22 marks the 46th memorial of the Roe V Wade legalization of abortion. Since that tragic decision, more than 60 million children's lives have been lost to abortion, and many suffer that loss -- often in
silence. The rally remembers the lives lost to abortion and calls upon our nation and its leaders to give children the protection they deserve.
Bring your children and join your fellow parishioners to be witnesses for God's gift of life. Archbishop Alexander Sample will be speaking at the rally. If you would like a ride to the rally, we will
leave from St. Cecilia’s parking lot at 1:15 PM on Saturday, January 19 — please call Mary Rigert.
9 Days for Life 2019 will take place leading up to and concluding on the annual Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children on January 22nd.
The multi-faceted centerpiece novena for the respect of human life will occur Monday, January 14 - Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Each day, a different intention will be highlighted, along with a short reflection, suggested actions, and related information. Novena topics (ordered by day): culture of life, persons with disabilities, sexual abuse, adoption, healing after abortion, human trafficking, infertility, assisted suicide, and the end to abortion. 9daysforlife.com

EL BAUTISMO DEL SEÑOR
ENERO 13, 2019
NAVIDAD
Enero 25, 2016.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD ~ JANUARY 13, 2019
FIRST READING ~ ISAIAH 40:1-5, 9-11
Comfort, give comfort to my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and
proclaim to her that her service is at an end, her guilt is expiated; indeed, she has received
from the hand of the LORD double for all her sins.
A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the LORD! Make straight in the wasteland
a highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made
low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, the rough country, a broad valley.
Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together; for the
mouth of the LORD has spoken.
Go up on to a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings; cry out at the top of your voice,
Jerusalem, herald of good news! Fear not to cry out and say to the cities of Judah: Here is
your God! Here comes with power the Lord GOD, who rules by a strong arm; here is his
reward with him, his recompense before him. Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms
he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM ~ PSALM 104:1B-2, 3-4, 24-25, 27-28, 29-30
O bless the Lord, my soul.
SECOND READING ~ TITUS 2:11-14; 3:4-7
Beloved: The grace of God has appeared, saving all and training us to reject godless ways and
worldly desires and to live temperately, justly, and devoutly in this age, as we await the
blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ, who gave
himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people as his
own, eager to do what is good.
When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of any
righteous deeds we had done but because of his mercy, He saved us through the bath of rebirth
and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our
savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.
GOSPEL ~ LUKE 3:15-16, 21-22
The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John
might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with water, but one
mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."
After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,
heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a
voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."

FIESTA DEL BAUTISMO DEL SEÑOR ~ 13 DE ENERO 2019
GLORIA
bendecimos, te adoramos, te glorificamos, te damos gracias, Señor Dios, Rey celestial, Dios Padre todopoderoso Señor,
Amen.
PRIMERA LECTURA ~ IS 40, 1-5. 9-11
"Consuelen, consuelen a mi pueblo, dice nuestro Dios.
a Jerusalén.
ORACIÓN A SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL
AMEN.
