Dear Parishioners, We have recently celebrated the great feast of Christmas from Christmas Eve through Epiphany, on January 7th. The following day we celebrated the Baptism of the Lord and began ordinary time. On Ash Wednesday, February 14th, we will move into Lent. Lent prepares us for the celebration of Easter and the seven weeks of the Easter season. This reminds us of our Catholic tradition of a liturgical calendar of days and seasons. The liturgical calendar is a device that calls us to remember and celebrate the great events of our salvation, as well as people associated with those events, in the long history of the Church during which certain individuals, saints, are recalled. The high point of the liturgical calendar is our celebration of the Paschal Mystery. That is the fact that God came among us in human flesh and did offer His life in sacrifice so that we might live in union with Him during our lives on earth and into eternity in heaven. We celebrate this event, which is the source of our life in Christ, with the three great days of the Triduum, Holy Thursday (celebrating the Last Supper and Jesus’ self-offering), Good Friday (the celebration of Jesus’ sacrificial death), and the Easter Vigil (celebrating the resurrection). This celebration continues on Easter Sunday which ushers in the Easter season. Everything we celebrate throughout the liturgical calendar relates to this most powerful event. The Christmas season (following Advent season preparation), celebrates the first step toward the Paschal mystery, or the incarnation. The feasts of Mary and the saints keep before us examples of the effectiveness of the grace that poured forth from the Paschal Mystery. The liturgical calendar reminds us that amidst the rhythm of our life we annually celebrate events and people to strengthen our communion with the God who saved us. The liturgical celebrations remind us of the constant intrusion of the Divine into our lives. The most powerful intrusion we celebrate is the Mass in which the fullest measure of the grace of the Paschal Mystery is offered to us. Yours in Christ,

TIME AND TALENT

Spiritual Enrichment Events (SEE) presents Three Great Loves: A Lenten Parish Retreat with Father Frank Desiderio, CSP, on Friday, February 16, 7:30 – 9:00 PM, and on Saturday, February 17, 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM. Based on the Great Commandment, love of God, other, and self, we will strengthen our parish community in our experience of God's love, learn to be more compassionate with ourselves and others, and be grateful for our lives, more truly following the way of Christ. Lunch will be served. Suggested donations: Individual $25; Family $45; Student/Senior $15. Please call 206-842-3908 by February 14th to RSVP. Fr. Desiderio will be available for Reconciliation on Saturday, 4:00-4:45 PM, and he will offer all Masses that weekend. Questions: 206-842-3908.

The Haiti Group is sponsoring Friday Soup Suppers during the Lenten Season and we are looking for one more community group to host a Lenten Soup Supper on February 23rd. The soup suppers are a

community builder and a wonderful way to share a simple meal before the Friday evening Stations of the Cross. The soup suppers are served from 5:30 - 7 PM, each Friday during Lent. If you would like more information, or you have a group that can host on February 23rd, please contact Sharon Reynolds at [email protected], or call (206) 595-0901. Thank you to all our groups that have already volunteered to host a Lenten Soup Supper!

The St. Vincent De Paul Society is handing out brown bags this weekend to assist Helpline House with its Food Bank. This month toiletry items such as hotel soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and

lotions would be most appreciated. Also, small containers of dishwashing liquid are very helpful. Please take a bag and return your filled bag to the vestibule of the church. Thank you for your generous donations that provide a blessing upon our island neighbors.

The St. Cecilia Italian Dinner will be held on Saturday, February 3rd in Conger Hall. The Italian Dinner has brought parish families together for an evening of fun, fellowship, singing, and great food for 18 years running. All parish members are welcome and new members are especially encouraged to attend and “break bread” with their new parish family. Seatings will be at 6:10 PM (after 5 PM Mass), 6:50 PM, and 7:30 PM. The cost of the dinner is $5 for children 12 and under, $15 for adults (12+), and $40 for families of 4 or more (adults/children). Tickets are on sale after all the Masses this weekend and next weekend. This event is sponsored by the St. Cecilia Parish Men’s Group and we encourage volunteers to participate. If you would like to help with this great event, please contact Brendan Curran at [email protected].

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

LEARN – SERVE – LEAD - SUCCEED is the theme of Catholic Schools Week. We invite you to join us for our OPEN HOUSE on Sunday, January 28th as we celebrate our school to kickoff Catholic Schools Week.

On Monday our Kindergarten and 3rd/4th graders will share their FISHLINE HOUSE project at our Whole School Circle. Later in the week, our 1st/2nd and 7th/8th classes will walk to HELPLINE HOUSE to learn about how they can help support families in need.

On Tuesday our 5th/6th graders will walk to the Bainbridge Health and Rehabilitation Center to play games and share stories with residents. Their stewardship project includes visiting BHRC residents twice each month.

On the suggestion of our ASB (Associated Student Body a.k.a. Student Council), Dress in your favorite Sports’ Team colors and Dress as an Inspirational Figure will be special dress days during this week. For our complete Catholic Schools Week schedule of activities and special dress days, please go to our website at www.saintceciliaschool.org.

On Thursday afternoon three classrooms will walk on the trails in the Sakai Property, next to our campus. Students will learn about plant species and they will brainstorm ideas for uses of the property. STEM teacher Mrs. Chasity Malatesta will send students’ creative suggestions to the Sakai property planning committee. This field trip provides students opportunities to LEARN, SERVE, LEAD and SUCCEED all in one. We will culminate our week with School Mass on Friday, followed by a reception at school for parents and parishioners.

Catholic Schools Week gives us the opportunity to celebrate and showcase our thriving school community. Please join us on January 28th at our OPEN HOUSE to kickoff a week of celebration.

With joy,

Susan Kilbane
