A Stewardship Moment Fourth Sunday of Advent

December 21/22, 2019 In today’s Gospel we hear of the coming of Emmanuel, which means “God is with us.” We celebrate three Ad-vents: the birth of Christ, his Second Coming, and his

presence in the world today. Our daily lives are attend-ed by God’s presence. Indeed, “God is with us.” The Good News of Christ’s Incarnation is that we are the

sign, the “sacrament,” of Christ’s presence in the world. People are supposed to see us, see how we love one another, see how we treat the stranger among us, see

how we give comfort to the poor and afflicted, and share the Good News with joy. They see how good stewards

are the light of Christ. And there can be no possible response except to say: “God is here!”

Would you pray for a priest each day this week?

Stewardship by the Book Fourth Sunday of Advent

December 22, 2019

When he discovered that Mary was with child, Jo-seph resolved to end their engagement with as little disgrace as possible. But obedient to the voice of God, he changed those plans and became instead

the protector of the child Jesus and His mother Mary. God grant that I may be as open to the lead-

ing of the Holy Spirit!

From the Desk of Father Haan Memories… and Making A Home Like no other celebration or tradition, it is Christmas that seems to be laced with so many memories, especially from child-hood. We each have our own, which give added meaning (and added joy) to the season. My family always went to the Christmas Eve children’s Mass at my parish in Lafayette. I can still smell the special incense used just for that Mass at St. Boniface! I quickly became an altar boy, growing into roles with increasing importance each year. After Mass concluded, we would drive to Grandpa Haan’s for dinner and fun with cousins. With over 100 of us now, we don’t all fit at Grandpa’s anymore, so locations have shifted! Later in high school, I began my own tradition of returning to the parish for the mid-night Mass. I found a special stillness and quiet joy at that Mass… it was spiritually the closest I could be to Bethlehem. Staying up so late would make me the most fatigued in my family on Christmas morning, but I never doubted it was worth it. For me, the last four months have been the creation of a new set of memories here at St. Patrick and St. Charles. So many of you have shown me kindness, generosity, and love, which has quickly made these parishes “home.” It is a joy to celebrate Christmas with you this year, and to make Christmas memories with you all. Let’s be spiritual close to Bethlehem! One other small memory I’d like to share: my childhood pastor would always reference and quote Caryll Houselander in his bulletin articles and homilies at Christmas time. Houselander was an English laywoman mystic who lived through the rav-ages of World War II, wrote children’s books and books on prayer and the spiritual life. She was a bit rough (she smoked and drank), but through a series of profound spiritual experiences became convinced that Christ could be found in each and every human soul, and that if we only looked for him in the saints, “we would never find him.” During the Second World War, doctors began sending patients to Houselander for counseling and therapy. Even though she lacked formal education in this area, she seemed to be able to “love them back to life,” and would even relieve them of their pain by taking it on her-self. Here’s a quote from Houselander which gives us the purpose of our celebration: “We all know persons who are exaggeratedly house-proud, who concentrate on the neatness, cleanliness, beauty of their house, to the exclusion of its comfort. Their house is not a home, nothing must ever be left about, out of place. To come in with muddy shoes is a crime; it is a crime to disarrange the cushions. In such a house one can neither work nor rest; one is never at home, because it is not a home. There are many people who are ‘soul-proud’ in the same way. They spend their whole time cleaning up their soul, turning out the rubbish, dusting and polishing. Like the house-proud person, they become nervous, tired. There is nothing left in them to give, for they have wasted themselves on the silver, the curtains, the orna-ments. Christ wants to be at home in your soul. He will not go away and leave you if the house is chilly and uncomfortable; he loves you too much to leave you, but how often, how tragically often, he must say nowadays: ‘The Son of Man has no-where to lay his head.’ Christ asks for a home in your soul, where he can be at rest with you, where he can talk easily to you, where you and he, alone together, can laugh and be silent and be delighted with one another. All this may seem daring, but it is true; it is the meaning of the Incarnation.” (From The Comforting of Christ, page 18.) May God bless you, your family, and our entire parish family this Christmas!
