Communion Chant #595—We Are the Light of the World

Merici Chapel… How many times in your life have you said, “I know I should have called” or “I was busy—I forgot, or I just don’t have the time right now—maybe later.” We could go on and on making excuses for our actions or lack thereof. What excuse will you give to Jesus when you meet Him and He asks, “Why didn’t you stop and see me? I was waiting for you in Merici Chapel, just for us to spend some time together and talk.”

Congratulations and God’s blessings to Kari & Jeffrey McManamon on the Baptism of their son, Max James; to Shannon & Mark Lembach on the Baptism of their daughter, Rachel Elizabeth.

SUNDAY COLLECTION

January 29, 2017

ALL MARRIED AND ENGAGED COUPLES  Couples of all generations are invited to a special Mass to express and reflect on the love they have for one another. Please join us in celebrating marriage on Saturday, February 11th at the 4:00pm Mass. A light reception will follow sponsored by the St. Charles SWIFT Ministry in Lower Parish Hall. We extend a special invitation to couples celebrating milestone anniversaries. Call Sr. Denise Marie (440)884-3030 with any questions. No RSVP required — just come and celebrate!

Well, did you see your shadow last Thursday? Can you believe a whole month f 2017 is behind us already? The Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) was established in 1937 in the Cleveland Diocese. So this is

CYO’s eightieth anniversary. CYO’s stated goal was to provide a healthy outlet for youthful enthusiasm and energy. CYO was founded upon Catholic social teachings and the principles of Franklin D Roosevelt’s 1930’s New Deal. CYO guided young Catholics to live a Christian life and to develop trust between peers. It was hoped that CYO involvement would dissuade young people from a life of crime during the economically stagnant years of the Great Depression. CYO was ahead of its time: from the beginning, CYO activities were open to all: boys and girls, all races, and all religions. During the Baby Boom years of 1946 to 1964, Cleveland CYO ministered to tens of thousands: day and residential camping, boxing, track and field, football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, and a variety of other sports in addition to social and service activities. CYO continues to enrich the lives of children today. Last Sunday I was privileged to attend an awards ceremony for a dedicated and hard-working parishioner. He has given more than forty years to our CYO parish sports program. He has been involved in all aspects of those sports, in addition to assisting with a variety of parish responsibilities as well as civic enterprises. The Diocese of Cleveland honored Ken Dworznik by selecting him for the CYO Diocesan Sports Hall of Fame. Ken joins three other St Charles parishioners, selected in prior years: Msgr Thomas Corrigan, St Charles pastor 1968-1987 and former Diocesan Director of CYO, 1950-1968; Kevin Leigh, St Charles Athletic Director for forty plus years; and John Abraham, ,forty year veteran with a variety of CYO credits on several levels. CYO came to St Charles almost eighty years ago. Thank you to all who have made St Charles CYO sports program a model and a resource for other parishes. And congratulations to Ken Dworznik for his recent, well-deserved, honor. The Dismas Ministry Team is reminded of our meeting this Monday, February 6, at 7:30pm, in the St Vincent de Paul Room (old Credit Union) next to the Parish Hall. Parish Council members are reminded of this month’s meeting on Thursday, February 9, at 7:45pm in the John Paul II Room, (second floor) of the PAC. Got an idea, suggestion, or criticism? Leave your message in the Parish Council Suggestion Box, found in the Safety Officers’ Lobby, Wilber Avenue. Don’t forget that you are invited to the Parish Council Donut Social, Lower Parish Hall, following next Sunday’s 9:00 and 10:30am Masses! Father Ryan has begun a popular new ministry: Post Cana. The next session is this Friday, February 10, 6:30 to 8:30pm in the Lower Parish Hall. Married couples of all ages are invited and welcome. Check the bulletin article for details. All women of the parish, and their friends, are invited to the Ladies Guild Day of Recollection scheduled for Monday, February 20 (Presidents’ Day), 8:30am to 2:30pm, with Father Doug Brown, Lower Parish Hall. The Day’s theme is “Our Lady of Fatima.” Details can be found in the bulletin article.

The 2017 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal begins in each parish this weekend! Please refer to the insert

in this week’s bulletin which includes parish goal information and an overview of the importance of Catholic Charities in our communities. This year’s appeal theme is You Did it for Me. In Matthew’s gospel, Jesus states, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for the least among us, you did it for me.” With your help, we are able to feed the hungry, take care of the sick, and welcome the stranger, just as Jesus has asked us to do. How will we respond as a community of faith?

As in the past, an in-pew commitment process will take place next weekend, February 11-12. All who have not received the mailing from Bishop Thomas, or have not had a chance to respond to it, will be asked to consider making a generous pledge to support the ministries and services provided by Catholic Charities. If you have received the mailing, please respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew envelope to indicate that you have responded by mail.

We invite you to view the stories of inspiration and more information at

www.catholiccommunity.org/2017Appeal.
