A TALE OF “TWO CITIES” – CANBERRA AND THE HUMAN HEART

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As we prepare to celebrate the Easter season, I would like to reflect on how life presents itself to us on various levels. Recently here in Canberra, commentators wrote that “Canberra has become a tale of two cities”. On one level, Canberra is an affluent city of great natural beauty, however, on another level, there is a dark underside to our beloved city.

Specifically, housing here has become largely unaffordable for up to 50% of us who earn $100,000 or less. About 20,000 households in the ACT face housing stress. Women escap-ing domestic violence and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are hardest hit. Too many people find themselves homeless in this fair city. There has been a 70% rise in homelessness in the ACT since the 2011 census. This is the dark side we often do not see.

The Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn is trying to help those who live in this shadow world in our local community. Last year CatholicCare assisted over 10,000 individuals and families with emergency accommodation and assistance to find long term accommodation. The St Vincent de Paul Society (Vinnies), has helped 12,250 people through its Night Patrol and temporary accommodation. Last year over 26,000 phone calls for practical emergency assistance were received by St Vincent de Paul Socie-ty; an increase of over 40% from the year before.

The lights and shadows of life in Canberra can be symbolic of our own personal lives too.

We all complain about the speed of our lives. It has a suffocating effect on going deeper in our relationship with God. But living a superficial life is not an option. There is also the fear factor. If we go deeper into our motivations and values, will we like what we may find? But just as we cannot live complacently in a city of such light and dark, neither can we live our lives in inner conflict.

EASTER presents us with opportunities to move from inner conflict to inner peace and hope.

For Christians, the hope is that the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ can truly make sense of our own sufferings and joys. This requires some quiet time to ponder at depth on our lives.

In reflecting, together with the mind and heart of Jesus, we can find hope. We find shelter in the storms of everyday life. We are not alone. Jesus has gone before us. He has nailed our darkness to the Cross at Calvary. His mercy has freed us from our dark inner conflicts in his Resurrection.

At Easter, living in the life of Jesus is a life healed and at peace.

By finding a home in the heart of Jesus ourselves, we are given great motivation to help truly, for example, the homelessness of Canberra. We can be the light in the darkness for so many in our fair city this Easter.

I extend a warm welcome to all to attend our Churches over this Holy Week. I wish you all a very happy and Holy Easter.

Archbishop Christopher Prowse

THE CATHEDRAL PIETY STALL: open 10 April Sunday after the

11am Mass for purchases of religious items.

First Reading Acts 10:34. 37-43 Peter addressed Cornelius and his household: ‘You must have heard about the recent happenings in Judaea; about Jesus of Nazareth and how he began in Galilee, after John had been preaching baptism. God had anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and because God was with him, Jesus went about doing good and curing all who had fallen into the power of the devil. Now I, and those with me, can witness to everything he did throughout the countryside of Judaea and in Jerusalem itself: and also to the fact that they killed him by hanging him on a tree, yet three days afterwards God raised him to life and allowed him to be seen, not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses God had chosen beforehand. Now we are those witnesses – we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead – and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has appointed him to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name.’ Second Reading Col 3:1-4 Since you have been brought back to true life with Christ, you must look for the things that are in heaven, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Let your thoughts be on heavenly things, not on the things that are on the earth, because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God. But when Christ is revealed – and he is your life – you too will be revealed in all your glory with him. Gospel Reading Jn 20:1-9 It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the

tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb and came running to Simon

Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved. ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb’ she

said ‘and we don’t know where they have put him.’

So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb. They ran together, but the other disci-

ple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first; he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying

on the ground, but did not go in. Simon Peter who was following now came up, went right into the

tomb, saw the linen cloths on the ground, and also the cloth that had been over his head; this

was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who had

reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this moment they had failed to

understand the teaching of scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
