Vol. 60, Num. 19, May 10, 2020 Page 3

May 1, 2020 Dear Parishioners and School Faculty,

Praise and honor be to God for sustaining us thus far in our battle against this faceless enemy called Covid 19. We pray for His continuous protection and healing upon those afflicted by the virus and eternal rest to the dead.

As you may have heard, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans has filed for Chapter 11 Reorganization under the bankruptcy code. This was a decision that was made after much discernment by Archbishop Aymond and the administration of the archdiocese and with great pain and heartache.

In his meeting with the priests to inform us of this decision, he asked that we inform you, the faithful, that this will in no way affect the parishes of the archdiocese. St. Christopher the Martyr Catholic Church and school will continue to function exactly as it did before. Masses will continue to be celebrated. Ministries will continue to meet.

Providing a well-rounded Catholic education is a top priority for our school and along with the Archdiocese, we renew our commitment to achieving excellence for our current students and for future generations. The daily operations of the ministry of Catholic education will not be affected by the filing for Reorganization under Chapter 11. What this will do is allow the archdiocese to restructure and renew its ability to minister to the people of the archdiocese.

The causes of this situation are threefold: 1) an inability to meet the annual diocesan budget, 2) the growing costs of lawsuits associated with the tragic sex abuse scandal, and 3) the decrease of funds due to the Coronavirus pandemic as parishes and ministries of the archdiocese have had to temporarily cease operations.

The archbishop also asked that we reiterate that NO money collected by the archdiocese that comes from the parishes has been, is now, or ever will be used to settle lawsuits associated with the sex abuse scandals. Those monies are used solely to run the administrative offices of the archdiocese which provide support and resources to the parishes so that they can better minister to their people. That has been the archbishop’s promise from the beginning, and he remains firmly committed to keeping that promise.

What I ask for from all of you is to pray in a special way in solidarity for the Archdiocese of New Orleans and for Archbishop Gregory Aymond during this time.

Also, please watch this video address from Archbishop Aymond at (https://youtube/EtGLv5LBGJE) and go to nolacatholic.org/renew for more information.

Yours in Christ, R. A. Igbogidi Rev. Raymond Igbogidi,

ST. CHRISTOPHER OUTREACH HELP LINE

We are in a bit of a crisis as 99% of our food comes to the main entrance of church, school, and drop-offs at the

rectory, and many people are requesting assistance. We are in need of items such as cereal, grits and oatmeal, and cans of fruit, beans, soup, tomato sauce, and Chef Boyardee. We also need ramen noodles, rice, and pasta mixes, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and pasta. For this month, we have an adequate supply of peanut butter and jelly, dried beans, and canned vegetables. The boxes we give out are 12” x 12” x 18”, so we are limited to regular-size items, not large, and we do not have the space to handle cold products. Please help us by checking “current best-by” dates. If you are in need of assistance, call 831-7692 and leave a message. We will return your call. We thank you on behalf of our parishioners who are in need. We will help as many as our food and finances will permit us. May God bless all of you and keep all of us healthy.

SAINT DAMIEN JOSEPH DE VEUSTER OF MOLOKA’I (1840-1889)

May 10

In the mid-1990s, a heavily bearded, bespectacled Robin Williams appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, whose host was clearly taken

aback. Letterman inquired as to why the wild look. Uncharacteristically subdued, the usually manic comic responded that he was producing and starring in a movie about a most extraordinarily compassionate man, Damien, the Leper Priest of Moloka’i.

Some saints transcend religious and ethnic boundaries to touch the heart that beats in each human being: Francis of Assisi; Mother Teresa; and, though Williams’ film was never completed, his admiration speaks, as does Damien’s statue outside the capitol in Honolulu, of this newest saint’s universal appeal. Far from his native Flanders’ idyllic beauty and rich culture, Damien volunteered to bear Christ’s light into Moloka’i’s bleak leper colony, building decent homes, opening schools, establishing clinics, planting farms, sharing the sufferings—and the social stigma—of those with whom he delighted to identify: “We lepers,” he would proudly say when finally he contracted leprosy. Saint Damien challenges us to identify the lepers of our own day, to examine our compassion for and our identification with them. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
