SCSU Volleyball History 101 Volleyball has come a long way since the “Sportday” activities of the late 1950’s and early ‘60s when SCSU would invite women’s vol-leyball teams from throughout the state to participate in a one-day event . The final “Sportday” was held in 1968 as women’s intercollegiate athlet-ics began to emerge and the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) was formed . That early association has now evolved to membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) .

Coach Gladys Ziemer organized the women’s extramural volleyball team in 1969 . The women played 11 matches and competed in a state-wide invitational tournament at the University of Minnesota. Ziemer’s Huskies finished the 1969 season with a 6-5 record and notched victories over Winona State, Minnesota-Morris and Gustavus Adolphus .

The 1970 squad ended its campaign with a 7-7 record and tied for third in the Minnesota Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) state tournament .

Ziemer’s 1971 team fell to a 5-6 mark, but rebounded in 1972 to finish second to the University of Minnesota in MAIAW competition and qualified for Region Six AIAW playoff action . Competing with teams from the seven-state Region Six area, the Huskies finished fifth and closed the season with an impressive 17-6 record .

The 1973 season was a banner year for women’s volleyball at SCSU . The Huskies captured the MAIAW championship by defeating a strong University of Minnesota team in the finals . Advancing to Region Six competition, Ziemer’s charges finished eighth and recorded a 13-8 season log .

The Huskies faced a rebuilding year in 1974 and finished fifth in the MAIAW with a respectable 9-5 record, but emerged as a state power again in 1975 .

The Huskies began the 1975 season with three straight losses, but recovered to compile a record-setting 14 consecutive wins . End-of-the-season blues settled on the team, as it finished third in the state tourna-ment and had to accept a disappointing twelfth-place finish in the Region Six tourney . The Huskies capped the 1975 season with a 22-12 record .

SCSU rose to the top in 1976 and claimed the MAIAW large-college title and posted an excellent 26-15 record .

The Glowatzke Era Begins at SCSUDianne Glowatzke took over the head coaching duties in 1977 and

the Huskies continued their excellence, compiling a 25-19 record and claiming second place in MAIAW competition . A sixth-place finish in the Region Six playoffs topped the season .

SCSU earned a 24-16 season mark in 1978 and finished third in the last year of the MAIAW large-college tournament .

The eight-team Northern Sun Conference was initiated in 1979, and the Huskies tied for second place with a 5-2 mark . A third-place finish in the MAIAW Division II state tour-ney ended post-season play for Glowatzke’s squad.

Glowatzke guided SCSU to a 21-18 record in 1980 and a third-place mark of 4-3 in the Northern Sun Conference . Once again, the Huskies fin-ished third in the MAIAW Division II state tournament .

A trip to the Region Six AIAW Division II Tournament highlighted the 1981 season for SCSU . The Huskies fin-ished second in the Northern Sun Conference and were also second in the MAIAW Division II state tournament . SCSU cap-tured its first Northern Sun Conference title in 1982 and placed second at the MAIAW Division II tournament . The

squad posted a 27-9 record, the most wins ever for the Huskies in a single season .

Glowatzke’s 1983 team finished the season with 33 victories and a 10-2 mark in conference play, good for second place .

In 1984, the SCSU volleyball program took on a new challenge and joined the North Central Conference (NCC) . The Huskies produced a 37-13 match play record and finished third in the NCC . Five SCSU play-ers were named to the All-NCC team . SCSU enjoyed a national ranking for most of the season and were rated 19th in the final NCAA Division II volleyball poll .

The 1985 season saw a record-high 38 victories for the Huskies as they posted an excellent .808 winning percentage . For the first time ever, SCSU advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships . The Huskies maintained their national spotlight by being ranked 10th in the final NCAA Division II volleyball poll .

SCSU recorded its 15th consecutive winning season in 1986 by post-ing a 29-20 record . The Huskies finished third in the NCC .

The 1987 volleyball season brought Glowatzke her 300th career victory as the Huskies posted a 25-20 record to finish third in the NCC . SCSU was ranked among the Top 20 of NCAA Division II most of the season .

Three-time all-conference selection Kathy Davis led the way for the Huskies in 1988 . SCSU posted a 22-15 overall record, and finished tied for third in the NCC . For the second time ever the Huskies earned a berth in the NCAA Division II National Tournament . The Huskies lost in the first round of the playoffs .

Two-time all-conference selection Sheri Mandell and first-year NCC selection Gigi DesLauriers led the Huskies to an 18-18 overall mark in 1989 . Karen Henderson was named to the District 15 all-academic team for the second consecutive year .

The Huskies’ fortunes dipped a bit in 1990. The rebuilding year saw SCSU finish with an 8-24 overall record and an eighth-place NCC finish . Gigi DesLauriers was named to the all-NCC team and all-NCC academic team for the second consecutive year .

A young SCSU squad hit the court in 1991 . The Huskies finished the season with a 9-14 overall record . DesLauriers was named NCC all-academic for the third year in a row . Lisette Hayden was named honor-able mention all-conference .

The Huskies turned the tables in 1992 finishing the season 24-12 overall and 5-4 in conference competition . Lisette Hayden, Kristi Kutter and Marja Lust were named to the NCC all-conference and all-academic teams . Hayden and Kutter also received all-region honors .

In 1993 St . Cloud State advanced to the championship game in the North Central Conference Tournament where they lost to Northern Colorado. Coach Glowatzke’s team finished 21-11 to become the four-teenth team which has won 20 or more matches in Glowatzke’s 17 years of coaching . Lisette Hayden and Kristi Kutter were two-time All-NCC selections along with Marja Lust who was named honorable mention . Swen Minnema, a sophomore middle hitter was SCSU’s fourth member of the All-NCC team .

Junior Swen Minnema and sophomore Cami Selbitschka earned All-NCC honors in 1994 . Minnema was also selected to the Academic

Viger and Strohschein were named to the NCC All-Academic and Academic Honorable Mention team, respec-tively . Sophomore middle hitter Kim Pellmann was named to the All-North Central Conference Honorable Mention team . The Huskies finished the season 8-25 overall . SCSU finished ninth in the NCC with a 3-15 record .

The 1998 Huskies showed improvement almost imme-diately, winning eight of it’s first ten games . SCSU went on to post a 16-13 overall record and finished sixth in the North Central Conference with a 9-9 record . All of this with only one senior in the line-up, versatile Shelly Geyen . The 2000 season saw SCSU chart a 7-21 record as Melissa Wright and Rachael Olson completed their stellar careers . In 2002, the Huskies saw the end of a very special era as longtime coach Dianne Glowatzke retired after 26 seasons at SCSU . With a 527-418 career record, Glowatzke ended her career with more wins than any coach in SCSU history and she ranked among the top 10 active coaches for career wins in DII volleyball in 2002. A pioneer in women’s athletics, Glowatzke was only the second person to coach the SCSU volleyball program .

A New Chapter In Husky VolleyballIn 2003, the Huskies welcomed the dawn of a new era as Patricia

Gerchy (Mickow) was named head coach . In her first season, Gerchy led SCSU to a 11-19 record and setter Kari Turkowski was named to the All-NCC First Team .

Huskies Return to the NCAA Playoffs The 2004 season saw the Huskies return to the NCAA Division II

playoffs . SCSU posted a solid 19-12 overall record and placed third in the NCC with a 7-5 record . To crown the season, Coach Gerchy and her troops received a coveted bid to the NCAA Division II North Central Regional . In first round play, the Huskies suffered a tough 3-0 loss to eventual region champs Minnesota Duluth . Leah Herrboldt and Jamie Schlagel both gained All-NCC status, while Megan Hardy and Angie Mayers were both All-NCC Honorable Mention . All-North Central Conference first team and the Daktronics, Inc . All-North Central Regional second team, both for the first time in her career . In 2006, Pangrac led SCSU with 397 kills (3 .54 kpg) and a .389 hitting percentage . Gothe, after transferring to SCSU from SDSU in 2004, com-pleted her four-year collegiate career with 1,093 kills and 1,290 digs .

NCC FinaleDuring the 2007 stint, SCSU went 10-21 overall and completed its

final season in the North Central Conference with a 2-10 mark and a 6th place finish . Junior libero Andreana Pieper (Williams) had a standout season, being named All-NCC Honorable Mention after leading the league in digs per game (5 .95) . The All-NCC Academic honoree also surpassed 1,000 career digs during the season and set a new SCSU school record for most digs in a season with 678 digs .

Dawning of a New Era - The NSICThe St . Cloud State University athletic department entered into

the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for the first time in school history in 2008-09 . Husky volleyball ended its first season in the NSIC with a 3-0 loss to top-ranked and eventual two-time national champion-ship Concordia-St . Paul on Saturday, Nov . 15 . SCSU ended the 2008 season with a 7-21 overall win mark and a 5-15 NSIC tally, improving their conference win total by over 100% . Senior libero Andreana Pieper

ended a fantastic career for the Cardinal and Black . The senior from Williams, Minn . posted 1885 total digs, good for a 4 .45 per set mark . Pieper’s performance in 2008 landed her an honorable mention nod to the Daktronics, Inc . All-America Team . Pieper earned the spot after being named to the Central Region First Team . Despite being named to the All-America Team, Pieper was an honorable mention to the Northern Sun All-Conference Team . Pieper led the league in digs per set, besting all four of the first team liberos . It was the second straight year Pieper led both the leagues (NCC and NSIC) in digs and earned honorable mention status .

Patricia Gerchy (Mickow) amassed a record of 70-141 in seven sea-sons with the Huskies as 2009 marked her last season as head coach of the Huskies . St . Cloud State went 7-25 overall in 2009 with a 3-17 NSIC tally, good for a 12th place ranking .

Michelle Blaeser was named as the Huskies fourth head women’s volleyball coach in March of 2010 . In her first season at the helm, Blaeser helped lead the Huskies to their best season in six years with a 14-14 overall mark (9-11 NSIC) during the 2010 season . She also helped coach senior middle hit-ter Kayla Tschida to an All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Honorable Mention nod . Blaeser went on to coach the Huskies through the 2014 season . Her squads went 6-22 in 2011 and 10-18 in 2012 before hitting the .500 mark in 2013 with a 14-14 record . Kayla

Tschida earned All-NSIC honors in 2010 and Ellie Dietzen gained All-NSIC accolades in 2013 for the Huskies .Current SCSU coach Chad Braegelmann joined the Huskies in 2015 . In his first campaign at SCSU, Braegelmann guided the Huskies to a 9-19 overall record and a 5-15 record in the always rugged NSIC . Brianne Stamer highlighted the season by being selected to the All-NSIC squad as a libero .
