Seeking New Members

for the Parish Pastoral Council An important part of every Catholic parish is the

Pastoral Council. This group of parishioners acts as an

advisory board for the pastor and the pastoral leadership

of the parish.

Each year the parishioners of St. Colette Parish

are invited to fill vacancies on the Council of some of the

current members whose time of service is about to expire.

This year we are in need of four new adult members and

one youth member. In addition, a list of alternates is

needed in the event of vacancies that may occur during

the upcoming year.

The vacancies are filled from a pool of parishion-

ers whose names are submitted for nomination during the

month of May. The selection of names will be held on

weekend of June 2nd & 3rd in church.

As a parishioner of St. Colette Parish, it is both a

privilege and a right to participate in the Parish Pastoral

Council. If you are an individual who would like to assist

in the direction and future planning of your parish, you

are encouraged to place your name for nomination.

To qualify for the Parish Pastoral Council selec-

tion process adults must be a registered parishioner for a

minimum of one year and at least 18 years of age. Nomi-

nated youths must be 15 – 17 years old whose family is

registered for a minimum of one year.

To submit your name or the name of a fellow

parishioner please complete the nomination form below

and place it in the ballot box in the Gathering Space of the

church, drop it in the collection basket, or mail/hand de-

liver to the Parish Office. Any questions or clarification

about the selection process or the functions of the Council

please contact Council Members Mark Henry at (734) 432

-9193, Gerard Deans at (248) 417-7980, Dan Vecchioni at

(734) 591-9318.

Reminder:

May 10th Is Not a Holyday of Obligation Many calendars identify this coming Thursday,

May 10th, as “Ascension Thursday” and Catholic calen-

dars list it as a holyday of obligation. However, it is

important to read the small print on Catholic calendars

reminding us that in most dioceses of the United States

(all of Michigan included), the observance of the

“Ascension of the Lord” is transferred to the following

Sunday. Therefore please note this coming Thursday,

May 10th, is NOT a holyday of obligation for Catholics

to celebrate Mass!

On The Rise Bakery This Weekend This weekend, “On the

Rise Bakery" will be visiting

our parish. The bakers are men

in the R.O.P.E. program

(Reaching Our Potential Every-

day) which is sponsored by the

Capuchin Soup Kitchen. The

men have come from prison or

long term addiction programs to restart their lives.

Although the men have a bakery on Gratiot and

McClellan Avenue, they can't make it without the help

of the parishes. They will be bringing with them

many delicious items for you to purchase. Please stop

by the Social Area to see the items for sale. They

thank the parish for allowing them to be part of our

community and ask that you hold them in your

prayers.

Marian Devotion

Thursday, May 10th at 6:30 pm

In the Catholic tradition the

month of May is dedicated to the mem-

ory of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please

join the members of the Women’s Guild

and Thomas Dooley Knights of Colum-

bus on Thursday, May 10th in church at

6:30 pm as we offer prayers and hymns

honoring Mary, the Mother of God.

Things We Are Not Collecting We are no longer collecting

ink cartridges, plastic bags, and egg cartons.

Please find other places to donate these items.

Pastor’s Corner As Church we continue to celebrate the Easter

Season this weekend and will continue to do so until the

observance of Pentecost Sunday on May 20th. Our

church continues to be decorated with the Easter Candle

and spring flowers. We continue to begin all weekend

Masses with the Sprinkling Rite with Holy Water to re-

mind us of our baptism and continue to sing Easter

hymns. Don’t forget to use the Easter Reflection books

for daily meditation and prayer during these Easter days!

The Easter Season always includes part of or the

entire month of May. Though we continue to observe the

Easter Season, in the Catholic tradition the month of May

is dedicated to the memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

At the beginning of May our parish observes the ancient

custom of crowning an image of the Blessed Virgin

Mary. This custom is traditionally known as a May

Crowning. Our parish’s May Crowning will take place

this Sunday, May 6th at 1:45 pm (immediately following

the 12:30 pm Mass). We will gather in the church for the

singing of Marian hymns, the praying of the rosary in a

multitude of languages, and the crowning of Mary’s

statue. Weather permitting we will then walk in proces-

sion to the Marian grotto located outside the Activities

Center for additional prayers and hymns and the crown-

ing of the statue there. Afterwards everyone is invited

into the Activities Center for the serving of free ice

cream sundaes!

Another opportunity open to us to honor the

memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary is by participating in

a Marian Devotion taking place in our church this week

on Thursday, May 10th beginning at 6:30 pm. Please

join the members of the Women’s Guild and the Thomas

Dooley Knights of Columbus as we offer prayers and

hymns honoring Mary, the Mother of God.

Many calendars identify this coming Thursday,

May 10th as “Ascension Thursday” and Catholic calen-

dars list it as a holyday of obligation for Catholics to

celebrate Mass. For most Catholics around the world the

fortieth day after Easter is celebrated as the Ascension of

the Lord and the celebration of Mass on that day is man-

datory for them. Almost twenty years ago the Catholic

bishops of our country petitioned the Vatican for the op-

tion to transfer the celebration of the Ascension of the

Lord from the fortieth day of the Easter Season to the

following Sunday, the Sunday before Pentecost. The

Vatican approved the bishops’ request and for the past

several years, for most of the dioceses in the United

States (all of Michigan included), the fortieth day of the

Easter Season is no longer observed as Ascension Thurs-

day. Therefore, please note this coming Thursday, May

10th is NOT a holyday of obligation for Catholics to

celebrate Mass. Instead we Catholics here in Michigan

and throughout most of our country will celebrate the

Ascension of the Lord next weekend, May 12th and 13th.

Every parish is given a CSA target goal estab-lished by the Archdiocese. This year our parish’s goal is $183,341.00. Every parish household is asked to make a sacrificial gift to this year’s CSA. The hope is that the average gift will be in the vicinity of $275 per household. For some, especially those on fixed in-comes, this will not be possible, even as a sacrifice, so whatever gift they can give will be appreciated. For others a $275 or more gift can be made to this year’s CSA campaign. What is being asked from everyone is not an equal gift but an equal sacrifice. What is impor-tant is that each of us does the very best we can. Also, it is recommended that one make a pledge to the CSA allowing us to spread the payment of our gift over sev-eral months. Please prayerfully consider the most generous gift possible to support the CSA. Complete the CSA form registered parishioners have received in the mail indicating your gift to this year’s appeal and return it in the CSA envelope to the Parish Office. May God bless you for your continued support. Happy Easter, Fr. Gary

Are You Able to Read a Foreign Language? If yes, the parish can use your help the weekend of May 19th & 20th. That weekend the Church cele-brates the Solemnity of Pentecost and we are hoping to proclaim the First Reading at some weekend Masses in a multitude of foreign languages. Some of the lan-guages we’re looking for are French, Latin, Spanish, Polish, German, Italian, and Portuguese but also, if pos-sible, languages such as Tagalog, Hawaiian, Japanese, or others. Those reading should be High School age or older and be able to read from the ambo in the sanctu-ary of the church. To volunteer your services please contact the parish office at 734-464-4433 or at [email protected] and leave your name, contact infor-mation, and the Masses you are available the weekend of May 19th & 20th. Please contact the parish office

by Friday, May 11th. Thank you.

REMEMBER TO SAY ONE HAIL MARY

EVERY DAY

FOR OUR FAMILY OF ST. COLETTE

The theme of the 2018 Catholic Services Appeal, Opening Doors to Grow with Christ, reflects our Holy Father’s invita-

tion to all Catholics to renew their personal relation-ships with our Savior, as “the joy of the Gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus.” Gifts to the CSA make possible a wealth of ministries, programs and services that touch the lives of thousands throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit each day. No one parish could provide all of these blessings, which benefit so many. For information about CSA funded ministries, programs, and services, please go to www.aod.org. Please prayerfully consider the most generous gift possible to support the 2018 Catholic Services Ap-peal. You may use the pledge program which allows you to spread your gift over several months. Or you may make a donation charging it to a credit or debit card. To use these options please go to our parish’s website, www.stcolette.net. On the right side of the Home Page under “Useful Links” open “CSA Dona-tions Online” and follow the instructions. Thank you for your participation.

Anniversary Celebration This year St. Colette Par-ish celebrates its 48th Anniver-sary. We are asking that any couple celebrating their 10th, 25th, 40th, 50th, or 60th Anni-versary during this year of 2018 to give us your names. We will obtain for you a Papal Blessing. Please call the parish office at (734) 464-4433 dur-ing office hours with your names and significant anniversary. Deadline: Monday, June 4th.

Mass will be celebrated on Sunday, Octo-ber 21st, at 12:00 pm for the Jubilarians. Wed-ding vows will be renewed and a special blessing will be given along with your Papal Blessing. These are not the only years that a couple can request a celebration honoring their anniver-sary of marriage; especially if it is a significant an-niversary such as twenty, thirty, thirty-five, fifty-five, etc. Even though a Papal Blessing cannot be given, a simple blessing by a deacon or priest can be offered. The anniversary blessing for a couple whose marriage took place in a Catholic Church can be celebrated during or after almost any week-end or weekday Mass and family and friends are invited to participate. To make arrangements for the blessing of a married couple celebrating a sig-nificant anniversary of marriage, please contact the parish office at 734-464-4433 or email to [email protected].

A New Dawn

Widows & Widowers Group A New Dawn is a group for Widows & Wid-owers to provide companionship for those who have lost a spouse. We meet the third Wednesday of every month at St. Edith Parish – 15089 Newburgh Road – Livonia – in the Parish Hall, with the exception of the month of July when we hold our meeting off site (site and date to be determined). We meet to pray, laugh, and enjoy a meal together. Please join us on May 16th. We look forward to meeting you. For information, please call Fran Gillis at 734-421-2548.

May Food Drive The May Food Drive, May 19th/20th, is designated to helping Sister Judie’s Outreach in Detroit. Lunches are distributed to the home-less in the city. Items of most need for the “treasures of the street” are: peanut butter, jam, napkins, plastic spoons,

zip type sandwich bags, paper lunch bags (8# size), gra-nola bars, individual fruit cups, individual applesauce cups, individual boxes of raisins, and bottled water. Monetary donations are always needed, too, and can be put in the box in the Gathering Space or put in the Of-fertory Collection in an envelope marked Food Drive. There are envelopes available in the Gathering Space. Thank you for your continued support of the less fortu-nate!

Watch Out for the Kids! It’s Spring Soccer Season for our Livonia Soccer Leagues who use the playing fields north of the parish parking lot. When driving thru and exiting the parish parking lot please use extra caution. Kids don’t always

remember to stop and look before they cross an active driveway or parking lot.

Meatballs Needed

For Soup Kitchen Visits In the past we have had many successful meatball drives at St. Colette and your generosity is always greatly appreciated. We are now able to resume the meat-ball collection due to some addi-

tional freezer space. The frozen meatballs can be found at Costco, Gordon Foods, and any local grocery store. If you are unable to shop for the meatballs, but wish to support our ministry, you may place your monetary do-nation in an envelope and place in the collection basket, put in the box in the Gathering Space, or drop off in the Parish Office. Please write “soup kitchen ministry” on the outside of the envelope. Your donations will enable our volunteers to purchase meatballs and other supplies as needed. Meatball donations should be dropped off at

the parish office on Monday, May, 21st, from

9:00am – Noon and 1:00pm – 4:30pm. If these times are not convenient for you, please contact Bob Mez-zadri at 248-477-3606 or [email protected] to make other arrangements to drop them off. We would like to thank everyone who continues to support the Soup Kitchen Ministry. May God bless you all!!!

Solemnity of Pentecost –

Wear Something Red! At weekend Masses on May 19 & 20 the Church celebrates the end of the Easter Season with the Solemnity of Pentecost. The liturgical color for the Solemnity is red. To enhance our celebration that weekend please remember to wear something red when you come to church for Mass!

Please remember in your prayers those who were

buried from St. Colette Church during the last days of

March and the month of April: Mary Krawczak,

Mary Ann Caribardi, John Michaels, Ernest Ferda,

Joan Kruszewski, Carolyn Geiger, Irene Harring-

the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and

is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe:

in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages.

They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." - Mk 16:15b-17, 18c

Parish Staff

To the Parish Family of St. Colette: It is our parish policy that all registered members of St. Colette Parish use their contribution envelopes each

week when they attend Mass, as we do need your financial support. If you are going through financial difficulties,

please put your empty envelope in the basket so we know you are practicing your faith as a parishioner at St. Colette. If

we do not receive envelopes in a calendar year, you will be contacted by the Parish Office to confirm if you are still

worshipping here.

Pray for the Sick of our Parish The names included in the Sick List should be parishioners, their relatives and friends. If you would like to add a name, please contact the parish office. Every 4-6 months the prayer list will be updated.
