The co-curricular program at SCAS recognises that education does not only occur in the classroom, but on the sporting fields, practice rooms, stages and many other areas where students might learn and excel.

St Columba students are renowned for the breadth of their talents and achievements. A large part of this comes from taking advantage of the opportunities the school provides both in the classroom and in its co-curricular program.

Our programs seeks to inspire interest, encourage passion and develop our students’ talents in the widest possible range of activities.

We believe that, linked to the formal learning offered by St Columba, we will provide our students an education that is more than the sum of marks, rather it is a process that recognises that true learning is ongoing, exciting and the key to long-term individual achievement .

The staff who lead these activities are passionate in their approach and eager to support the students in developing their skills, knowledge and passion.

Special Interest Groups

School Productions School productions are held every year at SCAS. A Primary School Production runs every second year, and generally a Secondary School Musical or full-scale Drama Production is staged every other year.

A number of small-scale productions and showcases are also slated for each year, and students of Drama are always afforded the opportunity to strut their stuff for audiences of their peers, family and the public during their coursework.

In 2010, Sophocles’ Greek tragedy Antigone was performed in a season of spectacular shows. In 2011, the Stage 5 Drama group helmed their own production of “Cluedo”. Many other Stage 5 and HSC Drama events were also staged throughout the year. In 2011 one of our HSC Drama groups was selected to perform at On-Stage in February 2012 at The Seymour Centre in Sydney. In 2012 the Primary School staged a fantastic production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Year 4/5 Drama If you want to get your foot in the door for the next SCAS Primary School Production or just love acting out this could be the club for you! Join Mr Hall for more mad-capped excitement in this year’s most exciting new club! Learn skills in stage awareness, character development, physical theatre, comedic timing, puppetry and much much more! Students in Year 4 and 5 are welcome to join this group on a first in best dressed basis.

Chess Club Chess clubs meet weekly in both the Primary School and Secondary School. Students of all abilities are welcome to come along and can play socially or in competition. Beginners are welcome to come and learn to play this great game. The Chess teams have the opportunity throughout the year to compete in local and State level competitions.

Interact Club The School has an active Interact Club which meets weekly. The SCAS Interact Club is affiliated with the Sunrise Rotary Club of Port Macquarie. Members participate in community service and have the opportunity to participate in MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly) each year.

Debating Students have the opportunity to debate and become members of Debating Teams within the School. Debaters develop the ability to use language appropriately, think in ways that are interpretive and critical and express their ideas clearly. They also learn to compose and sustain arguments, select and use language forms and features, think critically and interpretively using information and ideas relating to current affairs and question, challenge and evaluate cultural assumptions and the way in which they reflect personal and public worlds. Secondary students also have an opportunity to compete in formal HRIS Debating Competitions.

Special Interest Groups

Public Speaking Public Speaking is open to all students from Year 2 at SCAS and provides the opportunity for them to increase their confidence and ability when communicating with large groups of people.Students develop the skill of using language to communicate ideas effectively. They also think in ways that are imaginative, interpretive and critical, express ideas with clarity and develop the confidence to express themselves and their relationships with others and the world. Students also have the opportunity to enter Public Speaking competitions.

Crusaders Christian development groups cater for those students who wish to explore the Bible and issues of Christian discipleship further in a relaxed and personal atmosphere. They provide the opportunity for students to ask questions, share experiences, and pray for one another.

Mock Trial Mock Trial is a state-wide competition run by the NSW Law Society. Students are given “Mock” court cases which they prepare for and then compete against other schools in trial situations. SCAS has competed successfully in this competition over the last 6 years. Mock Trial is open to students in Years 10 and 11.

Secondary School Vege Garden Group An organic vegetable garden has been in existence for several years and is tended by students, staff and parent volunteers. Each week work is done to prepare beds, plant seedlings, raise seeds, tend to the plants and have some great interaction with each other out in the fresh air in the process. Students sell their produce to staff, parents and the school canteen through the School Front Office. Money raised is “dug back” into the garden, purchasing new plants, tools and trees.

Music

Primary Concert Band with Mrs CorriganThe Primary Concert Band meets weekly. It provides an introduction to the concert band and ensemble playing techniques. Students who have played a band instrument - trumpet, trombone, flute, clarinet saxophone etc. - for at least one semester are invited to join this band. Instruments are available to hire, however these are limited and students who hire an instrument are required to join the band.

Primary Rock Band with Mr BrownThis is an auditioned Primary ensemble, focusing on the introductory concepts of Rock. This group meets weekly during Long Break under the guidance of Mr Mark Brown.

Primary & Secondary String Orchestra with Mrs LeeThe String Orchestra meets weekly in the Chapel for students in Kindergarten to Year 12 who play an orchestral string instrument competitively.

Primary Recorder Club with Mrs CorriganThe Recorder Ensemble meets weekly during Term II at Long Break. All interested students are welcome. The focus of this group is in beginner playing and it is a great group for younger students to join. Participants must have their own recorder and bring it each week.

Primary Woodwind Sectionals with Mrs CorriganThis group’s focus is to assist students in learning their Primary Concert music and to refine ensemble skills with others from their section. Students who play flute, clarinet or saxophone in the Concert Band are invited to join.

Primary Brass Sectionalswith Mrs CorriganThis group’s focus is to assist students in learning their Primary Concert Band music and to refine ensemble skills with others from their section. Students who play trumpet, trombone, horn, euphonium or tuba in the Concert Band are invited to join.

Primary Guitar Clubwith Mr Templeton, Mr Shipton, Mr Hall and Mr Little

For all students wanting to learn some basic guitar skills in a fun environment. Some guitars are provided but students may bring their own if they prefer. This group runs weekly during Long Break.

Primary Ukulele Band with Mrs CorriganThis group is for students wishing to learn the ukulele and meets weekly. Students will learn chords and strumming patterns and will learn some songs to sing along to. Lots of fun! Open to all Primary students. Students are required to bring their own ukulele.

Music Secondary School Concert Bandwith Mr BrownThe Concert Band is an auditioned group open to all students. This band gives students an opportunity to experience playing a wide range of music repertoire. The Concert Band is under the direction of Mr Mark Brown, Director of Creative Arts & Performance.

Secondary School Jazz Ensemblewith Mr RodriquezThis group, which was formed in 2009, is a specialist Jazz Ensemble. The group is an auditioned ensemble, and provides opportunities for students to develop the appropriate etiquette and techniques needed for small jazz performance. Students perform both at school and in the wider community at a variety of events and concerts.

Secondary School Jazz Quintetwith Mr BrownThe Jazz Quintet is designed for advanced Secondary students and concentrates on the development of ensemble skills and Jazz improvisation. This group has performed at many important events including the opening of Charles Sturt University and The Glasshouse. Membership to this group is by invitation.

Chamber Ensemblewith Mr BrownProvides an avenue for advanced string and woodwind players to perform chamber works from the Baroque and Classical periods. This ensemble will form the Honours Music Group for 2013. Membership to this group is by invitation.

Secondary School Stage Bandwith Mr BrownThe Stage Band provides further musical avenues for advanced music students. The ensemble will be under the direction of Mr Brown. Stage Band consists of a standard rhythm section (drums, piano, bass and guitar) plus a full horn section (trumpets, saxes and trombone). In addition there will be 4 to 5 vocalists.

Specialist Lessons Specialist MusicMusic lessons are offered for many instruments, including: Woodwind, Strings, Brass, Piano and Keyboard and Drums. Students are encouraged to sit for AMEB examinations but there is no compulsion to do so.

Music Tuition ProgramMusic lessons occur throughout the week on a daily rotational timetable so that students have their lesson on the same day each week but do not miss the same class each time. Senior students (Years 11 and 12) must arrange to have their lessons in a free period or during breaks in the school day and have priority for these time slots. (Please collect a Contact Sheet for Music Tutors from the School Front Office).

Weekly Activities Timetable

Vocals and Choirs

Infants Choir - Years K-2with Mrs ParerOur youngest students are catered for with weekly rehearsals with Mrs Parer. Just come along and you will be made welcome. Singing from such a young age is so good for the development of a child’s ear and overall musicality, and in a fun environment children learn quickly.

Primary Choir - Years 3-6with Mrs CorriganRehearsals are weekly with Mrs Corrigan. There are no auditions and everyone in Years 3 to 6 is welcome. Repertoire is more challenging than in Infants Choir, and includes part singing and ear training exercises as well as learning good vocal techniques. This choir also supports and extends the work students do in the music classroom.

Secondary Choir - Years 7-12with Mrs van GendThe Secondary Choir, which rehearses on a Tuesday morning at 7:45am in the Chapel, is a well disciplined choral group dedicated to developing a love of choral singing in our Secondary students. Members of this group perform various styles of vocal music, gain an understanding of vocal techniques and develop confidence in their singing. The group performs part songs from a wide range of repertoire at School Productions, Eisteddfods, Workshops and Concerts throughout the year. The Secondary Choir is open to any interested students without audition.

Iintombi Zicula and Iintombazaanwith Mrs van GendIintombi Zicula and Iintombazaan are auditioned female groups that perform both sacred and secular music. Members must belong to the Secondary Choir. Rehearsing one lunch time and one morning per week, students have the opportunity to extend their vocal technique, develop sight singing skills, appreciate blending and balance in a vocal group, develop presentation techniques and enhance their understanding of different styles of music. Students perform both at School and in the wider community and as such it is expected that there is a high level of commitment to these groups and to their performance schedules.

Vocals and Choirs

Chamber Choir - Years 7-12with Mrs van GendThis auditioned ensemble focuses on the classical repertoire. It is one of the elite ensembles in the School and is involved in outside performances on a regular basis. The Chamber Choir rehearses every second Tuesday at long break and Thursdays before school in the Chapel. Members must belong to the Secondary Choir .

Low Rumbles - Years 9-12Low Rumbles (Senior Boys) rehearse on a Thursday long break and alternate Thursday mornings. It is open to any senior male student, with audition. Members of this group perform various styles of vocal music, gain an understanding of vocal techniques and develop confidence in their singing. They are involved in regular performances at School and in the wider community. There is an expectation that members also attend Secondary Choir.

High Rumbles - Years 7-9High Rumbles rehearse on Monday mornings before school. It is open to male students whose voices have not yet changed, so members tend to be years 7-9. This group performs various styles of music, and allows the boys to gain an understanding of vocal techniques and develop confidence in their singing. There is an expectation that members also attend Secondary Choir.

Dance

Secondary School EisteddfodDance Group

A selective performance troupe which gives students various opportunities to dance for audiences throughout the year in showcases, concerts and eisteddfods. The group aims for a high standard of technique and entertainment value. The 1.5 hour session on Monday afternoons from 3.30pm to 5.00pm involves a warm-up and creating of a group routine(s). There is a focus in this group of continuing to strengthen skills, peer relationships and stage experience.

Dance Honours ProgramDance Honours is an intensive program aimed at the extension and enrichment of our gifted and talented dancers. It aims to present elite routines of a very high standard in a variety of styles (including Contemporary, Ballet and Jazz). This group performs to a range of audiences including competitions, concerts and showcases, both locally and abroad. Students must be involved in ongoing, regular external tuition and/or Elective Dance study at school. In 2013 the Program will run Thursday afternoons from 3.30-6.00pm.

Primary School Dance EnsemblesDance groups are offered for Kindergarten, Infants (Years 1-2) and Primary (Years 3-6) students and are taught by professional dance teachers which St Columba outsources from local dance studios. The Kindergarten and Infants Dance Groups will perform at the Annual Dance Showcase in Term II and other school events. The Primary Dance Group will perform at the Showcase in Term II and will compete in the Port Macquarie Eisteddfod in Term III. These groups are open to all students.

Boys Dance EnsembleA group just for boys, led by senior Boy Captain, Samuel Packer. This troupe focuses on the learning of tricks and building skills, with a goal towards performance. All Secondary School boys are invited to participate. This group runs on Thursday mornings from 8.00am to 8.45am.

EisteddfodsEach year the school enters the Port Macquarie Dance Eisteddfod competitions, and to date the School has won categories in each event entered. The Eisteddfod dance troupes are trained by qualified dance teachers.

Sport

All students have an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports at SCAS which occur in both the summer and winter seasons. Students may compete in local Port Macquarie competitions and the HRIS (Hunter Region Independent Schools) Competition in sports such as athletics, basketball, cross-country, diving, equestrian, futsal, golf, hockey, mountain biking, netball, rugby league, rugby union, snow sports, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, touch football and triathlon.

Avenues for representation for talented athletes are available through the HRIS, AICES (Association of Independent Co-educational Schools), NSW CIS (Combined Independent Schools) and NSW All Schools.

Rugby UnionStudents participate in the local Port Macquarie Schools competitions on Friday evenings in Terms II and III for students in Years 3-8. Compulsory training is held on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30pm.

TennisSchool Teams are selected in Open, Under 15 years and Primary competitions to participate in the HRIS gala days which are held throughout the year. In 2012 the U15 Boys were runners up at the HRIS competition. Individual students may represent at AICES and NSW CIS level when selected.

NetballNetball provides an opportunity for students to develop their netball playing skills and tactics for both the HRIS Gala competitions. Students also participate in interschool visits with our sister school Manning Valley Anglican College. Teams are entered in the Year 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, Intermediate and Open HRIS Gala competitions.

Rugby LeagueThe School participates in the Mid North Coast Gala days for Secondary School for U13’s and U15’s. Student interest will reflect which age divisions are entered. Please contact Mr West for further details by phone on 6581 4188.

Sport

BasketballBasketball training is held on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:00am to 8:45am for various years (please see time table in this booklet). Basketball Games occur on Monday and Wednesday afternoons for School teams and provide an opportunity for all SCAS students to become involved in this sport. From the Monday and Wednesday competitions St Columba selects teams to play in the Hunter Region Basketball competition and the Port Macquarie Primary Schools Gala Day. Representative trials for the Hunter Region are also held early in Term I. Please contact Mr Andrew West (Secondary) or Mr Marten Hilberts (Primary) for more details. Come and join the fun!

Football (Soccer)SCAS offers a wide range of soccer teams for both girls and boys. Teams are entered in the Year 3/4, 5/6, 7/8, Intermediate and Open HRIS Gala competitions. At U15 level, both girls and boys participate in the Bill Turner Cup, a state wide knockout competition which begins locally and expands across the state following area and regional finals with the grand finals being held in Sydney. The U15 age group boys also have the opportunity to play in the HRIS Gala day in Newcastle. At U18 level, open boys and open girls teams are entered into the HRIS Gala Day, typically from years 10-12 and regular training and fixtures are arranged in preparation of these events.

Primary General Sports TrainingPrimary School offers Sport Training on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Long Break to train as per the HRIS sporting schedule.

TouchNSW Schools Touch occurs in Term I for Year 9/10 Boys and Girls teams, Term III for Years 7/8 Boys and Girls teams, and Term IV for Open Primary Boys and Girls teams. School teams may also participate in the HRIS Touch Gala Days in U15 and Open Boys and Girls age groups.

Futsal (Indoor Soccer)The Vikings Futsal Hastings School’s Competition takes place each year with SCAS entering teams in the U13,U14,U15,U16 and U19 age groups for Boys and Girls. Champion teams from this event progress to represent the region at the North Coast Championships and the chance to progress to the Australasian Championships.

Mountain BikingSCAS Mountain Biking has been growing in popularity over the past few years and the school now owns a number of mountain bikes, a bike trailer and maintenance tools. Students from Year 8 to 10 have been working on a range of local environmental projects involving mountain bike trail building and maintenance as well as bush regeneration. In addition to this more and more students are starting to become involved in events run by the local Hastings Valley Mountain Bike Club. The biggest event of the year is always the 12 Hour Enduro run in mid March.

Duke of Edinburgh

Duke of Edinburgh Award

All Year 9 to 12 students are encouraged to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and it is our desire that all students will receive the Bronze award as part of their Year 9 co-curricular activities. Increasing numbers of students are continuing on to complete their Silver Award in Year 10 and 11, then their Gold Award in Year 11 or 12. This involves completing volunteering, skill, physical recreation and adventurous journey components with increasing demands at each level of the Award.

Homework Help

Homework Help and Homework Drop In CentreAssistance with homework for all Kindergarten to Year 10 students is available each morning, Monday to Friday, downstairs in the Dawson Library between 8:20am and 8:50 am. Students (including Years 11 and 12) who do not need help but would like to complete their homework or study in a quiet, supervised area are also very welcome to attend these sessions. No booking is required and students can just turn up each morning.

All students are very welcome to attend Homework Help before school, downstairs in the Dawson Library.

Senior Maths HelpSenior Maths Help is available to all Secondary School students. Students interested in this service, please speak to your Mathematics Teacher.In 2013 the “Drop in Centre” runs on Thursday mornings from 8.00am in the D4 classroom, and possibly other mornings if demand dictates.
