"While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing,

broke it, gave it to them, and said, 'Take it; this is my body.'"

Celebrating the Passover meal was nothing new for the

disciples. They shared bread and wine with their families and

friends at this special ritual meal every year as a part of their

Jewish heritage. But when they were making preparations for

this particular sacred supper, they did not know how

different this meal was going to be.

On this night, Jesus changed the formula. Instead of hearing

only the ancient words of the Passover prayers that his

followers probably knew by heart, they heard these new,

unexpected, and, frankly, quite dramatic words: "This is my

body ... This is my blood." Nobody had ever made such an

unusual claim before. But this was more than a statement. It

was a command. Not only did Jesus enlighten his disciples

about the miracle taking place as the bread and wine became

his body and blood, but he also ordered them to "take it."

Being passive observers was not enough. Jesus wanted his

followers to be personally involved in accepting and

receiving his body and blood.

The gift of the Eucharist that Jesus instituted for all believers

at that Last Supper is not just a sign or a symbol of Jesus'

sacrifice. It is something that we are called to participate in.

He has given us the instruction to take the Eucharistic bread-

-his body hidden within it--and to make it part of ourselves.

Through this great sacrament, which we celebrate on today's

feast of Corpus Christi, we are able to be united, in a deeply

mystical yet truly physical way, to our Lord and Savior. This

union brings about the promise in today's Alleluia from

John's Gospel: "Whoever eats this bread will live forever."

Dear Parishioners:

Ten school days to go and our school community will be welcoming summer vacation…. We start thinking of summer images.. bare feet, bright sunshine, summer sports, sea shells, trips to the library and visits with relatives and friends… of course reading books, Math practice and journal writing!!!! We are almost there…….

We did have a great way to celebrate another challenging but a great and successful school year. There are so many milestones…. Great things to mark our 52nd year…….

Our 29 8th graders graduated yesterday. They had their Mass, ceremony and Reception. Our class of 2015 are going to various high schools. 13 of our graduates have received scholarships totaling over $80,000.00.

Please pray for them as they move on to High school life. We are so proud. We will miss them. They have come a long way. Our Kindergarten class also graduated from their first year of school. We also celebrated the many achievements and accomplishments of our k to 8th graders at our Awards ceremony last Wednesday.

Thank you to all who participated and supported our 26th Annual Father Dewan Golf Classic… it was a great success!!!See you next year.

We are steadily getting to our enrollment goal of 220…… we still have a few openings left. We are closed for 8th grade. Please come and visit us… be counted and be an active part of our growing St. Columba school family. Please call our office, we are open over summer break…..301 567 6212 orwww.stccatholic.org

CATECHISM IN A YEAR

Day 147 - How important is the Eucharist for the

Church? What names are there for Jesus' meal with us?

How important is the Eucharist for the Church?

The celebration of the Eucharist is the heart of the Christian

communion. In it the Church becomes Church.

We are not the Church because we get along well, or

because we happen to end up in the same parish

community, but rather because in the Eucharist we receive

the Body of Christ and are increasingly being transformed into

the Body of Christ.

What names are there for Jesus' meal with us, and what do

they mean? The different names indicate the unfathomable richness of this

mystery: the Holy Sacrifice, Holy Mass, the Sacrifice of the

Mass the Lord's Supper the Breaking of Breadthe Eucharistic

assembly the memorial of the Lord's Passion, death, and

Resurrection the Holy and Divine Liturgy, the Sacred

Mysteries Holy Communion.

Holy Sacrifice, Holy Mass, the Sacrifice of the Mass: The one

sacrifice of Christ, which completes and surpasses all sacrifices,

is made present in the celebration of the Eucharist. The Church

and the faithful, through their self-offering, unite themselves

with Christ's sacrifice. The word Mass comes from the Latin

dismissal, Ite, missa est, "Go now, you are sent."

The Lord's Supper: Every celebration of the Eucharist is still

the one supper that Christ celebrated with his disciples and, at

the same time, the anticipation of the banquet that the Lord will

celebrate with the redeemed at the end of time. We men do not

make the worship service; the Lord is the one who calls us to

worship God and is mysteriously present in the liturgy.

The breaking of bread: "The breaking of bread" was an old

Jewish ritual at meals, which Jesus employed at the Last Supper

to express his gift of self "for us" (Rom 8:32). In the "breaking

of bread" the disciples recognized him again after the

Resurrection. The early Church called their liturgical feasts "the

breaking of bread".

Eucharistic assembly: The celebration of the Lord's Supper is

also an assembly of "thanksgiving", in which the Church finds

her visible expression.

Memorial of the Lord's Passion, death, and Resurrection: In the

celebration of the Eucharist, the congregation does not celebrate

itself; rather it discovers and celebrates again and again the

presence of Christ's saving passage through suffering and death

to life.

Holy and Divine Liturgy, Sacred Mysteries: In the

celebration of the Eucharist, the Church in heaven and on earth

unite in one feast. Because the Eucharistic Gifts in which Christ

is present are, so to speak, the holiest thing in the world, we

also speak about the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Holy Communion: Because we unite ourselves with Christ at

Holy Mass, and through him are united with one another, we

speak about Holy Communion (communio = fellowship).
