To wind up our Summer Book Club reflections, let us turn back to Dr. Scott Hahn’s Understanding “Our Father.” He spends three chapters on “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” If God is all good, why would He lead us into the temptation to do evil? Isn’t the devil the tempter? Dr. Hahn sees this as both a “perfecting trial” and an important admission that we cannot, without God’s help, make it through the inevitable temptations in our fallen world. While we ask God to keep us from undergoing these trials, when we look back, we often see that they are “teachable moments” when we learn something about God’s will for us by enduring, and surviving, the temptation. Dr. Hahn points out that Jesus warns the disciples twice in the Garden of Gethsemane that they are about to be put to a test (Luke 22:40, 46), and St. Paul describes how to deal with temptation in 1 Corinthians 10:12-16. By admitting that we need God to “deliver us from evil,” we admit that it is only with His help and power that we will resist and triumph over evil.

Monday, September 3rd is Labor Day, a National Holiday. Morning Mass will be at 8:00am. All Parish Offices will be closed on Monday. May St. Joseph the Worker intercede on behalf of all workers! Normal Office Hours , 9 - 4pm, will resume on Tuesday, September 4th.

? Dear Parishioners, Some of you know that I have been living with foot pain for 1 1/2 years. Some nights I sleep and other nights I get very little sleep. I have had two failed surgeries. I am scheduled for a third surgery to remove a stump neuroma on Friday, September 14th at Vassar Hospital. I must stay off my foot for one - two weeks that I might heal. So, I won’t be out and about but will likely be able to work at my desk. Please pray that this surgery will be the solution! Father Michael

CRASE Course to be offered on September 22nd Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) is a course developed by the US Department of Homeland Security to help citizens better protect themselves in an active shooting situation. This is a video/discussion format and many police agencies throughout the country are presenting it to interested groups of citizens. The East Fishkill Police Department has a certified instructor who will be offering this course for any interested parishioner. The date is September 22nd from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM in the Convent Meeting Room. Space is limited so sign-ups are necessary. More sessions can be scheduled if there is enough interest. Many members of our Welcoming and Healthcare Ministries have either taken or will be taking this class in the very near future. Sign-ups will be on the weekend of September 15-16 in the Narthex of the Church.

SCHOOL NEWS Summer is winding down ...

...and we are gearing up for the new school year. We can't wait for our students and their families to experience all of our SDSC facility and program improvements! We are also excited for you to meet our enthusiastic and dynamic new faculty team! In the midst of all the changes, we have left one thing unchanged: SDSC's commitment to giving our students the finest education in a faith-based community!

Beginning in September, girls will be permitted to wear a khaki SKORT instead of green shorts during the Summer uniform season! Skorts must be purchased through Lil' Darlings and are expected to arrive the first week of September. Please call the store at 845- 298-7300 to check availability. Green shorts purchased from Lil' Darling or the SDSC Uniform Exchange are still permitted. However, the girls' green shorts are being discontinued and will no longer be available for purchase as new by the close of this School Year. There are no changes at this time for the Boys Summer Uniform. Sorry Boys!

BIG Technology Changes! We have recently completed the installation of five new high definition Promethean ActivPanel interactive display boards. The faculty will be trained in the use of these boards next week. These 70-inch multi-touch screens provide interactive learning, providing a tablet-like experience in each classroom! With the four existing Promethean boards, SDSC now boasts of the latest interactive Smart Board technology in every class homeroom!

There will be NO Wappingers Busing the first day of School. Carpooling is encouraged to ease traffic congestion.

After School Program will be available for students beginning the first day of school. Go online for the After Care Registration Form.

Important Back to School Notices

MONTHLY STUDENT MASS - 2018/19 The student Mass, held once a month throughout the school year at the Sunday 9am Mass, will begin on September 23. These Masses are geared toward the students of the parish and students participate in various roles. To ensure that all grade levels have an opportunity to participate, a sign up sheet has been designed in the following manner: Grades 1 - 2 Greeters Grade 3 Offertory/Gift Bearers Grades 4 - 7 Petition Readers Grades 5 - 8 Lectors Grades 5 - 8 Handouts at the end of Mass Greeters are stationed at the doors of the church to welcome people to our church. Gift Bearers carry the gifts to the altar at the offertory. Petition Readers read the petitions after the Creed/before the Offertory when the gifts are brought to the altar. Lectors proclaim the Word of God. The students who are readers will be given their reading ahead of time to practice and will be instructed on how to approach the altar and do their reading. We usually have Handouts to give to the families at the end of Mass, distributed by students holding baskets at the door. If a student would like to volunteer for any of the above roles, please contact Betsy Thompson at 845-475-4416 OR [email protected] A responsible adult must sign up the student - students cannot sign up to volunteer themselves! Upcoming Student Masses for 2018/19 are: September 23, October 28, November 18, December 9, January 13, February 3, March 3, April 7 & May 5.
