ST. COLUMBA PARISH MISSION STATEMENT St. Columba parish is a Catholic community striving to be a visible witness of God’s loving presence among us. Called by Baptism and centered in the Eucharist, it is our common purpose to know God, to live and love as Jesus did and to serve others. We value each person and draw from our diverse talents to grow and to respond to the ever - changing needs of our community. All are welcome!

We thank McHoul’s Funeral Home for their generosity in providing our calendars again this year! The calendars are now available at the doors of the Church.

BAPTISMS We congratulate the parents and families of the children who were born again in the new life of Christ, and who became a part of our parish family through the sacrament of Baptism.

Charlotte Rae Darcy

PARISH NEWS:

POLISH WIGILIA (OPLATEK)

The Christmas Eve Wigilia Supper forms the focal point of the Polish Yuletide customs. Wigilia, which means vigil, commemorates the birth of Jesus. For Polish families, the meal starts when the eastern star appears through the parlor window to serve as a guide to the Birth of Jesus in the same manner as the star of Bethlehem was a guide to the Magi! The meal begins with the ancient tradition of breaking oplatek, a thin wafer, or bread of love. It is passed to the various members of the family who put it to their lips and wish each other Blessings for the upcoming year. These wafers are now available in the Rectory.

SPECIAL EVENTS

Sunday, December 13th Blessing of the Baby Jesus

(from your Nativity set) - At All Masses

I have returned from my Sabbatical! It is good to be home. I am grateful to all of you for your patience and your prayers, and especially to Father Chris, Gary Bartilucci and our entire staff for carrying on in my absence. I am thankful for Fr. Emmanuel, who is now serving at the Church of St. Patrick in Highland Mills. I had a wonderful, once in a lifetime experience. I lived in Rome and studied at the Institute for Continuing Education at the Pontifical North American College. I had the opportunity to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain and earn my “Compostella.” I lived in Lourdes, France for one week and served as Confessor. I concluded my time in Scotland with a visit to Iona Island. Thanksgiving Day found me praying at the Tomb of St. Columba. I now look forward to celebrating with you the Birth of Our Savior and serving you in the New Year of 2016. Please know that throughout my Sabbatical you were never far from my thoughts and prayers. May God bless all of our parish families throughout this Holy Season! Sincerely, Father Michael McLoughlin

SECOND COLLECTION - TODAY The Retirement Fund for Religious Collection benefits some 33,000 senior sisters, brothers and religious order priests - women and men who have consecrated their lives to serving God and the Church. During this Year of Consecrated Life, Pope Francis calls on the faithful to recognize the special witness that consecrated women and men offer our Church and world. Today, many of these sisters, brothers and religious order priests - these saints in our midst - are elderly. While some continue in volunteer minis-try, others are frail and need care. So, I ask you to join with Pope Francis and me in acknowledging the gift of consecrated life. Please pray for God’s blessing on all of our religious, and give generously to the Retirement Fund for Religious. Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York

Pope Francis has declared an Extraordinary jubilee of Mercy to be a “special time for the Church” in which Catholics throughout the world recall and celebrate God’s mercy. Mercy is the bridge that connects God and man, opening our hearts to the hope of being loved forever despite our sinfulness. What can you do? Be Merciful! Here are some ways: Corporal Works: Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead. The Year of Mercy begins on December 8th and ends on November 20, 2016. Mercy is important because it is a wellspring of joy, serenity and peace. Our salvation depends on it. Mercy is the ultimate and supreme act by which God comes to meet us. Mercy is the fundamental law that dwells in the heart of every person who looks into the eyes of his brothers and sisters on the path of life. As Christians, we are always called to be merciful toward others and to perform works of mercy.

and end on October 22, 2016. A Holy Hour will be held on the night before the November 2016 Elections.

PRO - LIFE PRAYER AT ELECTION TIME - (starts December 22nd) Dear Lord and Giver of life, we thank you for the precious gift of Human Life

That is greatly threatened by the Culture of Death. Aware of the dangers we are now facing, we ask that You guide us in electing the leaders

Our nation truly needs: Leaders with the wisdom to discern your providential plan,

Leaders who understand the weakness of the human condition, Leaders who counsel our citizens to respect the rule of the law, Leaders with the fortitude to face their opponents with grace,

Leaders with knowledge of our Constitution and of natural rights, Leaders whose piety makes them aware of their own limitations,

And leaders whose reverential fear informs their moral judgement. We pray that the inalienable rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, promised by our

founders, may be preserved, protected, and defended for all, especially the most vulnerable members of our society.

May Mary, the Mother of God, and our mother, Intercede for us, and keep our children safe from harm, Especially those endangered by abortion.

And may the Holy Trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, sustain us in our struggle to live in peace as one nation under God. AMEN.
