Reflecting on God’s Word
One of the all-time great Christmas movies is It’s a Wonderful Life! The classic scene is the final one. The townspeople are gathering in George Bailey’s living room. They’re pouring money onto a table, all with the intention of rescuing George from financial ruin. It’s not long before George’s brother enters the picture. Having heard of the hard times George had been going through, he secured a leave from the military, hopped a plane, and flew all day and night to make it to Bedford Falls. He wanted to be of help. Seeing the people and the mountain of money, he raises his glass and toasts his brother, “the richest man in the world!”
George Bailey was rich, all right, but not because he was suddenly inundated with money. He was rich because he had family and friends who loved him and cared about him. Una de las películas estadounidenses más famosas de todos los tiempos para el tiempo de Navidad es It’s a Wonderful Life! (“¡Qué bello es vivir!”). La escena clásica sucede al final. La gente del pueblo está reunida en la sala de George Bailey. Están tirando dinero sobre una mesa con la intención de rescatar a George de una ruina financiera. "Mary's Faith Combines Complete Trust in the Lords Promises with a Certain 'Unknowing'" Dear brothers and sisters,
Today I would like to reflect with you briefly on Mary's faith, beginning from the great mystery of the Annunciation. "Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (Lk 1:28). These are the words - recounted by the Evangelist Luke - with which the Archangel Gabriel greets Mary. The angel's greeting to Mary is an invitation to joy, a deep joy, it announces the end of the sadness that there is in the world in front of the limits of life, suffering, death, wickedness, the darkness of evil that seems to obscure the light of the divine goodness. It is a greeting that marks the beginning of the Gospel, the Good News.
But why is Mary invited to rejoice in this way? The answer lies in the second part of the greeting: "The Lord is with you." Here, too, in order to understand the meaning of the expression we must turn to the Old Testament. In the Book of Zephaniah, we find this expression "Rejoice, O daughter of Zion, ... the King of Israel, the Lord is in your midst ... The Lord, your God, in your midst is a mighty savior" (3:14-17). In these words there is a double promise made to Israel, to the daughter of Zion: God will come as a savior and will dwell in the midst of his people, in the womb - as they say - of the daughter of Zion. In the dialogue between the angel and Mary, this promise is fulfilled to the letter: Mary is identified with the people espoused to God, she is truly the daughter of Zion in person; in her is fulfilled the expectancy for the final coming of God, in her the Living God makes his dwelling.
In the angel's greeting, Mary is called "full of grace"; Mary is the creature who in a unique way has opened the door to her Creator, she has placed herself in his hands, without reserve. She lives entirely from and in the relationship with the Lord; she is in an attitude of listening, attentive to recognize the signs of God in the journey of her people; she is inserted into a history of faith and of hope in the promises of God, which constitutes the fabric of her existence. And she submits freely to the word received, to the divine will in the obedience of faith.
I would like to emphasize another important point: the opening of the soul to God and to his action in faith also includes the element of darkness. The relationship between human beings and God does not erase the distance between Creator and creature, it does not eliminate what the Apostle Paul said before the depth of the wisdom of God, "How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!" (Rom 11:33). But the one who - like Mary - is totally open to God, comes to accept the will of God, even if it is mysterious, even if it often does not correspond to our own will and is a sword that pierces the soul, as the old man Simeon will say prophetically to Mary, when Jesus is presented in the Temple (cf. Lk 2:35).
It is no different for the journey of faith of each one of us: it encounters moments of light, but also meets with moments where God seems absent, his silence weighs on our hearts and his will does not correspond to our own, to what we would like. But the more we open ourselves to God, welcome the gift of faith, put our trust in Him completely, the more He makes us able, us with his presence, to live every situation of life in peace and in the assurance of his faithfulness and of his love. But this means going out of oneself and one's projects, because the Word of God is a lamp to guide our thoughts and our actions.
I would like to pause once more to dwell on one aspect that emerges in the infancy narratives of Jesus narrated by St. Luke. Mary and Joseph bring their son to Jerusalem, to the Temple to present him to the Lord and consecrate him as required by the law of Moses, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord" (Lk 2:22-24). This gesture of the Holy Family acquires a more profound sense if you read it in the light of the evangelical knowledge of Jesus when he is twelve, who, after three days of searching, is found in the Temple discussing scripture with the teachers. To the words full of Mary and Joseph's concern: "Son, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety", corresponds the mystery of Jesus' answer: "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?"(Lk 2:48-49). That is, in the property of the Father, in the Father's house, like a son is. Mary must renew the deep faith with which she said "yes" at the Annunciation; she must accept that precedence that the true Father of Jesus has; she must leave that Son whom she generated free to follows his mission. And Mary's "yes" to the will of God, in the obedience of faith, is repeated throughout her life, until the most difficult moment, that of the Cross.
Faced with all this, we can ask ourselves: how was Mary able to live this path beside her Son with such a strong faith, even in the moments of darkness, without losing full trust in the action of God? There is an underlying attitude that Mary assumes in the face of what happens in her life. At the Annunciation she is disturbed by hearing the angel's words - it is the fear a person feels when touched by the closeness of God - but it is not the attitude of those who are afraid in front of what God may ask. Mary reflects, she ponders the meaning of this greeting (cf. Lk 1:29). Mary does not stop at a first superficial understanding of what happens in her life, but is able to look deeper, she allows herself to be questioned by the events, processes them, discerns them, and gains that understanding that only faith can provide. It is the profound humility of the obedient faith of Mary, who welcomes into herself even what she does not understand of the action of God, leaving it to God to open her mind and heart. "Blessed is she who believed in the word of the Lord" (Lk 1:45), exclaims her relative Elizabeth. It is precisely because of this faith that all generations will call her blessed. The omnipotence of God, also in our lives, acts with the force, often silent, of the truth and of love. Faith tells us, then, that the defenseless power of that Child in the end overcomes the noise of the powers of the world.

Hoy quisiera reflexionar con ustedes brevemente sobre la fe de María a partir del gran misterio de la Anunciación. “Alégrate, llena de gracia, el Señor está contigo” (Lc. 1,28). Estas son las palabras --relatadas por el evangelista Lucas--, con las que el arcángel Gabriel saluda a María. El saludo del ángel a María es una invitación a la alegría, a una alegría profunda, anuncia el fin de la tristeza que hay en el mundo frente al final de la vida, al sufrimiento, a la muerte, al mal, a la oscuridad del mal que parece oscurecer la luz de la bondad divina. Es un saludo que marca el comienzo del Evangelio, la Buena Nueva.
¿Pero por qué María es invitada a alegrarse de esta manera? La respuesta está en la segunda parte del saludo: “El Señor está contigo”. También aquí, con el fin de comprender bien el significado de la expresión debemos recurrir al Antiguo Testamento. En el libro de Sofonías encontramos esta expresión“: ¡Grita de alegría, hija de Sión!... El Rey de Israel, el Señor, está en medio de ti… ¡El Señor, tu Dios, está en medio de ti, es un guerrero victorioso!” (3,14-17). En estas palabras hay una doble promesa hecha a Israel, a la hija de Sión: Dios vendrá como un salvador y habitará en medio de su pueblo, en el vientre de la hija de Sión. En el diálogo entre el ángel y María se realiza exactamente esta promesa: María se identifica con el pueblo desposado con Dios, es en realidad la hija de Sión en persona; en ella se cumple la espera de la venida definitiva de Dios, en ella habita el Dios vivo.
En el saludo del ángel, María es llamada “llena de gracia”; María es la criatura que de una manera única ha abierto la puerta a su Creador, se ha puesto en sus manos, sin límites. Ella vive totalmente de la y en la relación con el Señor; es una actitud de escucha, atenta a reconocer los signos de Dios en el camino de su pueblo; se inserta en una historia de fe y de esperanza en las promesas de Dios, que constituye el tejido de su existencia. Y se somete libremente a la palabra recibida, a la voluntad divina en la obediencia de la fe.
Me gustaría hacer hincapié en otro aspecto importante: la apertura del alma a Dios y a su acción en la fe, también incluye el elemento de la oscuridad. La relación del ser humano con Dios no anula la distancia entre el Creador y la criatura, no elimina lo que el apóstol Pablo dijo ante la profundidad de la sabiduría de Dios, “¡Cuán insondables son sus designios e inescrutables sus caminos!” (Rm. 11, 33). Pero así aquel –que como María--, está abierto de modo total a Dios, llega a aceptar la voluntad de Dios, aún si es misteriosa, a pesar de que a menudo no corresponde a la propia voluntad y es una espada que atraviesa el alma, como proféticamente lo dirá el viejo Simeón a María, en el momento en que Jesús es presentado en el Templo (cf. Lc. 2,35).
No es diferente para el camino de fe de cada uno de nosotros: encontramos momentos de luz, pero también encontramos pasajes en los que Dios parece ausente, su silencio pesa sobre nuestro corazón y su voluntad no se corresponde con la nuestra, con aquello que nos gustaría. Pero cuanto más nos abrimos a Dios, recibimos el don de la fe, ponemos nuestra confianza en Él por completo, tanto más Él nos hace capaces, con su presencia, de vivir cada situación de la vida en paz y garantía de su lealtad y de su amor. Pero esto significa salir de sí mismos y de los propios proyectos, porque la Palabra de Dios es lámpara que guía nuestros pensamientos y nuestras acciones.
Quiero volver a centrarme en un aspecto que surge en las historias sobre la infancia de Jesús narradas por san Lucas. María y José traen a su hijo a Jerusalén, al Templo, para presentarlo y consagrarlo al Señor como es requerido por la ley de Moisés: “Todo varón primogénito será consagrado al Señor” (Lc. 2, 22-24). Este gesto de la Sagrada Familia adquiere un sentido más profundo si lo leemos a la luz de la ciencia evangélica del Jesús de doce años que, después de tres días de búsqueda, se le encuentra en el templo discutiendo entre los maestros. A las palabras llenas de preocupación de María y José: “Hijo, ¿por qué nos has hecho esto? Mira, tu padre y yo, angustiados, te andábamos buscando”, corresponde la misteriosa respuesta de Jesús: “¿Por qué me buscaban? ¿No sabían que yo debía estar en la casa de mi Padre?” (Lc. 2,48-49). Es decir, en la propiedad del Padre, en la casa del Padre, como lo está un hijo. María debe renovar la fe profunda con la que dijo "sí" en la Anunciación; debe aceptar que la precedencia la tiene el verdadero Padre de Jesús; debe ser capaz de dejar libre a ese Hijo que ha concebido para que siga con su misión. Y el "sí" de María a la voluntad de Dios, en la obediencia de la fe, se repite a lo largo de toda su vida, hasta el momento más difícil, el de la Cruz.
Frente a todo esto, podemos preguntarnos: ¿cómo ha podido vivir de esta manera María junto a su Hijo, con una fe tan fuerte, incluso en la oscuridad, sin perder la confianza plena en la acción de Dios? Hay una actitud de fondo que María asume frente a lo que le está sucediendo en su vida. En la Anunciación, ella se siente turbada al oír las palabras del ángel --es el temor que siente el hombre cuando es tocado por la cercanía de Dios--, pero no es la actitud de quien tiene temor ante lo que Dios puede pedir. María reflexiona, se interroga sobre el significado de tal saludo (cf. Lc. 1,29). María no se detiene en una primera comprensión superficial de lo que sucede en su vida, sino que sabe mirar en lo profundo, se deja interrogar por los acontecimientos, los procesa, los discierne, y adquiere aquella comprensión que solo la fe puede garantizarle. Y la humildad profunda de la fe obediente de María, que acoge dentro de sí misma incluso aquello que no comprende de la acción de Dios, dejando que sea Dios quien abra su mente y su corazón. “Feliz de ti por haber creído que se cumplirá lo que te fue anunciado de parte del Señor” (Lc. 1,45), exclama la pariente Isabel. Es por su fe que todas las generaciones la llamarán bienaventurada. La omnipotencia de Dios, también en nuestras vidas, actúa con la fuerza, a menudo silenciosa, de la verdad y del amor. La fe nos dice, por lo tanto, que el poder inerme de aquel Niño, al final gana al ruido de los poderes del mundo. Su Santidad Benedicto XVI
