Living God’s Word The feast of the Holy Family gives us pause to ponder the phenomenon of family. If we can duplicate the love Mary and Joseph and Jesus had for each other, there’s no telling what the positive and rich effects might be.

Reflecting on God’s Word One of the all-time great Christmas movies is It’s a Wonderful Life! The classic scene is the final one. The townspeople are gathering in George Bailey’s living room. They’re pouring money onto a table, all with the intention of rescuing George from financial ruin. It’s not long before George’s brother enters the pic-ture. Having heard of the hard times George had been going through, he secured a leave from the military, hopped a plane, and flew all day and night to make it to Bedford Falls. He wanted to be of help. Seeing the people and the mountain of money, he raises his glass and toasts his brother, “the richest man in the world!” George Bailey was rich, all right, but not because he was suddenly inundated with money. He was rich because he had family and friends who loved him and cared about him. There’s much to be said for the benefits and blessings of family.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today’s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the of-ferings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrim-age—the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life’s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christ-mas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for festi-val meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind!

HOME IS WHERE THE FAMILY IS The idea, dream, and reality of family is so strong and durable that we use it to describe all that is best about human gatherings. We speak of the family of na-tions, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always “get it right,” but they always tried to. These three “amateurs” were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. He found his vocation—to do his Father’s work—but he also returned home with his parents.

CHRISTMAS SHARING PROGRAM · 2012 On December 8 & 9, those of you who participated in our Christmas Sharing Program this year brought your gifts to the Ahearn Activity Center. Again, we were overwhelmed with all the gifts, food, certificates and cash that was donated. We collected approximately:
On Sunday, December 9, we delivered to two different loca-tions. First, we traveled to Casa Catalina, a facility which is part of Catholic Charities. Casa Catalina is located at 4537 S. Ashland (Back of the Yards neighborhood). It is quite a small building for the amount of people we were told that they ser-vice. They feed about 350 people every Wednesday and they have the facility open the rest of the week for people who need clothes, etc. The people who greeted us there were extremely grateful for the generosity of our parish. Next, we traveled to Roseland (11255 S. Michigan) to deliver the baby gifts and some of the food to the Roseland-Altgeld Adolescent Parent Program. This program is a Catholic Charities program for teenage parents. The gifts were distributed the next week at their annual Christmas party. Those who coordinate the program have been there for many years and it is always wonderful to see them each Christmas season. They were very grateful for the gifts, food, and money.
During the week of December 17, we delivered gifts that were brought late to the Christmas Sharing. These gifts were deliv-ered to the Catholic Charities Program located in Des Plaines. The people who work with the programs there were very grateful for the gifts. Our number of gifts, food, money, gift cards, etc. were about equal to the number last year. In this struggling economy, we are very grateful for the generosity of our parish community. Special Thanks to the Following • St. Juliana School Children • The Student Council (under the direction of Mrs. Jane
Lidgus & Mrs. Kanela Arianas) coordinated the collection of money ($700) to purchase 40 gifts for the program.
• Junior High Students (under the direction of Mrs. Jane Lidgus) who volunteered to help collect, sort, and bag the gifts on Saturday and Sunday and load the truck on Sun-day.
• Tom Draths & to the basketball players who helped with taking down the tables and loading the truck.
• Jim & Tim Neenan for supplying the truck and helping to deliver the gifts to Roseland & Casa Catalina.
On behalf of our St. Juliana Liturgy Team, we would like to thank you for your generosity towards our program this year. We hope each of you and your families had a very Merry Christmas. We pray for a Happy and Healthy New Year for ALL! May God bless each of you.

FOR HEALING
Lord, You invite all who are burdened to come to You. Allow your healing hand to heal us. Touch our souls with Your compassion for others. Touch our heart with Your courage and infinite love for all. Touch our mind with Your wisdom, that our mouth may always proclaim Your praise. Teach us to reach out to You in our need, and help us to lead others to You by my example. Most loving Heart of Je-sus, bring us health in body and spirit that we may serve You with all our strength. Touch gently this life which You have created, now and forever.
Amen.

THANK YOU FROM THE TURKEY TROT COMMITTEE
The Edison Park Turkey Trot committee would like to thank Boy Scout 965 for their invaluable help with this year’s event. Over 5,000 people participated in this year’s Turkey Trot so there was much to do. Our scouts were very helpful, moving tables, boxes, tents and pallets of water. They stayed around to help clean up the site when the race was over. Their help and service was truly appreciated by all. St. Juliana students also volunteered their time helping with various tasks such as stuffing (no not turkeys) children’s goody bags. Their efforts helped defray the cost for the event which means more money will be donated to this year’s designated charity which was the Chicago Special Olympics.

Be a Digital Disciple Contest The Archdiocese of Chicago has announced a video contest for Catholic teens as part of the ongoing emphasis on the Year of Sunday Mass. All Catholic high school students from Archdiocesan parishes in Cook and Lake counties are invited to show witness to their faith by creating an original, two-minute video about the importance of Sunday Mass. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place entries. Original videos submitted as a DVD, may be created and produced by one individ-ual or by a team of teens who agree to share the award money. A matching award will also be given to the Catholic parish, Catholic school or Catholic Church charitable organization designated by the winners. The first prize winner and designated organization will each receive $5,000; sec-ond prize is $2,500 and third prize is $1,000. The video contest is being co-sponsored by Mercy Home for Boys and Girls. Contest participants will be asked to participate in a small-group reflection proc-ess called Circles of Witness for Teens, create and produce a two-minute video, show the video to other teens, gather feedback and submit the completed entry form and DVD to the Archdiocese. Deadline for submissions is Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. Complete details and entry forms for the video contest are available on the Arch-diocesan website, www.archchicago.org. 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal
“Love Never Fails!” 1 Corinthians 13:8 The 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal is underway. Many of our parish-ioners either have or soon will receive a mailing from Cardinal George. He will ask that you make a pledge to the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal. Please respond generously. The Appeal supports both parish and Archdiocesan ministries. The Appeal funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our parish. Appeal funds support education and formation of lay minis-ters and deacons and continuing education and on-going spiritual formation of priests, our religious education programs and Prolife to name a few.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is: “Love Never Fails!” It is God’s love for us that is responsible for all that we are and all that we have. We are the beneficiaries of God’s love throughout our lives. As we contemplate His gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work our parish, of our Archdiocese and of the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please consider the materials that you will receive. Review the minis-tries and services funded by the Annual Catholic Appeal, including the ones that directly support the work of our parish. Then please give generously. Please note that when our parish reaches its goal 100% of the addi-tional funds received will be returned to us for use in our parish.
