First Sunday of Lent

March 5, 2017

Just as life is full of awe-inspiring and graced moments, so it is also has its moments of temptations and allurements. Some are simple like can-dy, smoking, over-eating, impatience and anger. Other times our al-lurements are more need driven which can sometimes place our per-sonal integrity in jeopardy or influence the course of events in our lives

or can produce negative effects in the life of others. The word on this First Sunday of Lent seems to lead and draw us beyond the mere symptoms of our temptations to the heart of what disposes us to the at-tractions that exert forces of negativity in our lives. Often we focus our energies on the temptations we experience rather than delve into what drives and gives impetus to the enticements of our lives. In the story of Genesis the serpent tempts Adam and Eve to ... eat the fruit of life (Genesis 2). It would certainly be easy to think the center of the story is about the “infamous apple,” and the inability of Ad-am and Eve to say “no.” It is not until we take notice of the dialogue that transpires between the tempter and Eve that we are given a different perspective. The tempter never says that the fruit of the tree is particularly good. It is Eve, not the temper, the story tells us ... that finds the fruit of the tree partic-ularly good (Genesis 2). It is Eve, not the tempter who finds the food ...pleasing and desirable (Genesis 2). What the tempter does say is: ... you certainly will not die! God knows well that the moment you eat ... your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is evil (Genesis 2). In other words, the tempter strives to convince Adam and Eve that what God was really trying to do was hold out on them! He argues that their relationship with God was insufficient and they would be “missing out on something.” In the Gospel Jesus is lead through a series of temptations that escalates with each scenario and accu-mulates when the temper displays all the kingdoms of the world before him: ... Then the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence and said ... ‘all these I shall give you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me’ (Matthew 4). It is clear that both the temptations of Adam and Eve and Jesus are similar. The tempter asks Adam, Eve, and Jesus to place their trust in him rather than in God. In both cases, the real temptation is not the apple nor is it ‘all the kingdoms of the world,’ as much as it is the tempter trying to pose the possibility that he has more to offer than God if they would only surrender to him. Adam and Eve succumb to their drive for more, while Jesus stands firm on the truth and tenant of life: ... we do not live on bread alone (Matthew 4). The point of the two stories is not necessarily to pit one against the other: Adam and Eve verses Jesus, as much as it is to pose the question of where our heart truly rests. Are we setting ourselves up for a “heartbreak” by grabbing the easy solution, the quick answer, the immediate satisfaction which seems so wonderful (and pleasing to the eye), but is only transitory. Adam and Eve could not perceive be-yond the relationship that they already processed with God! They believed God had “short changed” them. They were afraid they were going to “miss out on something,” so they grabbed the apple! On the other hand, Jesus was steadfast in his belief that the relationship offered to him by God would pro-vide him with everything he would need. God would look after him. Perhaps the question before us to-day is not so much the temptations that lure us (to do this or that) as much as whether we have the mistaken belief that if we follow God we are going to somehow “miss out on something” so we too reach for the apple. Maybe this First Week of Lent invites us to ask ourselves what lies behind our temp-tations that somehow move us to settle for something less than what God believes we deserve. Father Michael-Dwight 2

Reflection

MINDSETS FOR A MEANINGFUL LENT After becoming Rooted In Jesus, we explored, perhaps the deepest as-pect of our relationship with God in learning that I Matter which we cele-brated throughout the Golden Jubilee of Saint Angela Merici Parish. Then we entered into the Jubilee Year of Mercy, considering ways to surrender our right to be right, in order to deepen our relationship with God and with one another. Now Is The Time for considering another aspect of deepen-ing our "relationship" with God, one another, and ourselves by considera-tion of our spiritual mindset and clashes we might have with our cultural mindset. This exploration begins with Lent and forms our basic focus upon Relational Integrity. Relational Integrity is demonstrated by Jesus through the various tempta-tions he undergoes in his encounter with Satan and because of the power of the narrative it is easy to lose sight of one of the underlying dynamics of all the Gospel stories and the relationship of Jesus with the Father. In the temptations Jesus undergoes, he demonstrates unequivocally that his re-lationship matters more to him than anything Satan might deceitfully promise. In the temptation story of Adam and Eve in the first reading, tast-ing the apple (or being God like) is more important than honoring the rela-tionship with God. Is the "sin" eating the apple or diminishing/torching the trust, honesty, and integrity of their relationship? Throughout the season of Lent, the readings explore various relational mindsets that might help us recognize, reconcile, or renew our mindset so that we might live in rela-tional integrity with the God to whom we matter so much. Three mindsets we may touch upon in our journey through Lent might be: Righteousness, Faithfulness, and Holiness. The idea of Relational Integrity is

associated primarily with a mindset of "Faithfulness". Three aspects of that spiritual mindset are Mercy, Mutuality, and Mindfulness. We spent a whole year on Mercy, so hopefully we have learned and grown from that experience. Mutuality is basically the Golden Rule, which most of us have wrestled with our entire lives. Relationships not characterized by mutuality are commonly thought of as dysfunctional. Mindfulness is a profound spiritual process of learning to practice acceptance, gratitude, trust and surrender. Holiness in the context we will be working is basically formulating a mindset of hope, trust and joy. The difficulty for many of us is that these mindsets do not necessarily harmonize well. Jesus was constantly admonishing the mindset of Righteousness as expressed by the Scribes and Pharisees because of their hypocrisy. When one stands in judgment of others, there is a legiti-mate danger of hypocrisy. If we choose to live our lives righteously there is usually no prob-lem. However, when we apply our standard of righteousness to anyone else there can be real spiritual danger. I know people who have torched, regrettably, their relationship with family members because they needed to be "right." Pope Francis has recently indicated that even being an atheist is preferable to being a hypocrite. Is God honored by broken re-lationships? Faithfulness to the Gospel can offer some help in that regard. Lent promises to be a profound experience if we allow ourselves to look honestly at the spir-itual mindset we prefer, and examine whether our relationship with God is static, growing, or declining. May the journey be fruitful and the experience rewarding. Chuck Andersen 3

One of the most exceptional aspects of Saint Angela Merici is the feeling of welcome and belong-ing: We are part of something much greater than any one person. Our parish connects us as neighbors, a community, and as a People of God and followers of Christ. The dedication of our people, the gifts, time, talent, and treasure that are shared so generously have created a faith community that is vibrant, alive, and filled with the Spirit of Christ. Your Stewardship support for the Pastoral Services Appeal last year has allowed our Diocese to continue to foster the many ministries of Faith Formation, Outreach, and social and community ac-tivities. We were also able to continue to foster the ministries of our parish particularly with our par-ish outreach (Bread of Angels and the ACT Office) and our Youth, Jr. High, and Young Adult Minis-tries, (Steubenville, Pets for Vets, Winter Wonderland, Spiritual and Personal Growth Evenings for youth and young adults, and Adoration and Prayer and Praise evenings) which our parishioners have always held as a very high priority at each Parish Assembly in the last ten years. In addition, we were able to enhance and complete many upgrades of our site that were in need of our at-tention after fifty years: Complete the roof work in Saint John Vianney and in the Parish Center Of-fices as well as replace the air condition/heat systems, resurface and stripe the black-top of the parking lot on Fir Street, provide special parking spaces for our seniors for easy access to the church for mass, the care and enhancement of our landscaping and the painting of our site. We are currently in the process of completing the work on our Roland Digital Grand Piano and review-ing the options for an organ since the original instrument, because of age was evaluated as an extreme fire hazard. Repairing the organ would be more than purchasing another, and if moved (as planned to the Choir Area) would take up over half of the space needed for our choirs). Final-ly, we are in contact with the Diocese of Orange and the City of Brea to move forward with the LED Parish Signage on Walnut Avenue. These are a few of our projects that have transpired be-cause of your support and care. Our vision for this PSA 2017 is to continue to support our Youth, Jr. High, and Young Adult Ministries and to supplement the purchase of an organ for our parish. It is our belief that Saint Angela Merici has consistently been generous stewards when specific en-deavors or projects for ministry and the life of the parish are warranted, so it is important to listen to your heart as we begin PSA 2017. Your pledge is very important to the work, ministry, and the growth of our parish. This year’s presenters, Susie and Dave Beas, Chris Blake, and Carolyn Lamka will share their own personal faith journey and how Saint Angela Merici has enabled them and their families to embrace more intimately their Catholic-Christian identity. As you reflect on your pledge, remember all stewardship is returned to our parish once we have met our pledge-goal of One Hundred and Two Thousand Dollars) $102,000.00 This year we are asking for each person (family) to pledge $400.00 (Four Hundred Dollars) which is about $33.00 a month or approximately $8.25 a week. You may pledge on the envelopes provided in the pews or on the parish website or you may want to take a pledge envelope home and pray and discern about your stewardship support. Your response to God’s generosity will certainly be evident in the experience of Church at Saint Angela Merici. Please pledge. Pledge now. Pledge to make a difference. Pledge to witness to your gratefulness to God and the desire to see us continue to faithfully fulfill our Gospel-mission as a Parish Faith Community. Now is the Time! Father Michael-Dwight
