For the past several days, I was at a workshop that our Diocese requires for new pastors. There were about 50 new pastors/administrator's in attendance and there was one thing we all

had in common; we were all concerned about the various problems and needs of our parishes. The one difference we had was how we dealt with those problems and needs and the type of attitude we have when dealing with the various problems. Often, we can approach our problems by saying that it's just not fair. How many times have we heard this from children or uttered these words about our boss, or even about God? The Jewish community, in Judah and Babylon during the time of the prophet Ezekiel, cer-tainly felt that way about God, at least until they came to a greater understanding of God’s promises to them through Ezekiel’s words of judgment and encouragement. Ezekiel speaks for God when he tells the people that it is because of sin, wickedness and lack of virtue that punishment has befallen them ─ not that suffering and difficulties have come to them because God is unfair. They learn they are responsible for their own actions: If they do what is right and just, they will live; if they do not, they will die. The same encouragement – yes, encouragement! – comes to us from Saint Paul in his let-ter to the Philippians. For as we heard from Ezekiel, the promise of life is not based on things beyond human capability. In fact, it is based on our human free will and capacity to choose that which is good, right and just. Saint Paul tells us how. He says, and it’s quite simple really, Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others. Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus. Have the same attitude of Christ Jesus, who – remember – was fully human even as He was fully divine. This is encouraging because it means it is something we can do, with Christ’s help. We can, through the practice of virtue and with God’s grace, choose that which is good and which is life-giving. Even when our human faults and weaknesses cloud our understanding, we can still choose to follow God’s command, as the first son in to-day’s Gospel reading did. We may not know why he initially refused, but we know by his actions that he is the one who had the same attitude as Christ because he did as his fa-ther asked. Let us do the same. Trust in God’s promises, rely on Christ’s help and allow the grace of the Holy Spirit to work in us – that in all we might do we have the attitude of Christ because it is no longer us who lives, but it is Christ who lives in us. Our true hope of Glory!

Much love in Christ Jesus, Fr Dave

Catholic Social Teaching & the Death Penalty: Life and Dignity of the Human Person

The first and foremost aspect of the Church’s teaching that

applies to the Death Penalty is the belief in the inherent dignity of the human person. Made in the image and likeness of God, the human person is the foundation of a moral vision for society and stands at the heart of the Church’s understanding of justice. As Catholics, we believe in a consistent ethic of life, from concep-tion to natural death the sanctity of the human person cannot be diminished. By allowing the state to end a life before natural death, the death penalty contradicts this consistent ethic, and does not conform to our pro-life teaching.

The death penalty violates the sanctity of the human per-

son, and it also threatens innocent life. Despite our best efforts, our criminal justice system is not perfect. According to a 2014 study, at least 4% of those sentenced to death in the United States are innocent. The 159 people and counting who have been exonerated due to their innocence since 1973 exemplify that fact. For every 9 people who have been executed since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, 1 person has been exoner-ated after being proven innocent. The death penalty clearly vio-lates the inherent dignity of the human person. For more infor-mation please visit: Catholicsmobilizing.org. Information will also be available in the courtyard and any question can be discussed on October 14 & 15.

Eucharistic Ministers Needed! “Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?” (Mt 25:44) St. Jude Medical Center is in need of Ex-traordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to the sick. This wonderful ministry allows you to serve once a month or once a week and you select the time convenient for you. Please contact Marie Barna at 714-992-3000 x3822 for more information.

America Needs Fatima The public rosary for the Fatima Centennial will be held on October 14th at Brea City Hall Park (down the street from our church) after the 8:00 AM mass. Meet at the pergola where you will see the Fatima banner. Please save the date and plan to come and pray publicly for our country. Contact Jude 714/348-6269 for more infor-mation.

Sacred Heart Holy Hour of Reparation

On Thursday, October 5th @ 7 PM in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. “It is altogether impossible to enumerate the heavenly gifts which devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus has poured out on the souls of the faithful, purifying them, offering them heav-enly strength, rousing them to the attainment of all virtues…This devotion is a gift to us from God.” (Pope Pius XII, 1956 Encyclical) We invite you to join in honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus during this devotion. Prayer books will be provided. Contact Joan Hosek at 714/983-7560 or [email protected].

Children’s Liturgy It’s Coming Back and we need Volunteers! Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the 9:30 Mass is a dismissal program for school age children. The children are able to hear the readings from the Children’s Lection-ary worded so that they can understand. They leave Mass right before the first reading and return to church after the Universal Prayers. This is a great opportunity for adults who wish to share their Catholic faith through the Sunday readings. Training is available! Contact Debbie Kistler at 714/743-2978 for more information or stop by their table after 9:30 Mass on Welcome Back Sunday! A.C.T. Office

St. Angela Parishioners: We would like to thank you, on behalf of Active

Christians Today, for your very generous do-nation of back packs and school supplies for our back to school program. Thank you for your support of our organization. Blessings, Maria Fulton, Coordinator

"Human life is sacred! From the beginning, it involves the crea-tive action of God and remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is life's sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from the beginning until the end: no one can under any cir-cumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an in-nocent human being." Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2258 All Catholics are called to be pro-life – to defend and respect

the dignity and sanctity of all human life from the moment of conception to natural death. That call is ignored in abortion. Since abortion was legalized in 1973, through all nine months of pregnancy, 58 million children have died in abortion. Fifty percent of women who have had abortions express serious regret and 44% are diagnosed with severe anxiety disorders as a result of their abortions. According to the Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood’s own research group, 91.7% of women seeking abortions report that their reasons were socioeconomic. In other words, if they had the proper resources, they would have kept their child and avoided so much heartbreak and pain! Pro-life Crisis Pregnancy Centers provide this much needed support – material, spiritual and emotional. They receive donations of diapers, clothing and furniture, and provide services to women free of charge. Client advocates listen with love and concern, working with local shel-ters and counseling services to provide families the support and resources needed to keep families together and make them self-sufficient. Local parishes help with donations and prayer, for both the families in need and the staff at these centers, many of whom are professionally trained volunteers. October is Respect Life Month, an opportunity to remember those whose lives are not respect-ed, and a chance to redouble our efforts to promote the protection of those innocents who cannot speak for themselves. Please pray for all Crisis Pregnancy Centers, especially the La Ha-bra Life Center, our closest center. They will also gladly receive donations of clothing, diapers and financial support. Checks should be made payable to St. Angela Merici, with a notation to be used for Crisis Pregnancy Centers. They can be dropped off at the Parish Office. Thank you so much for your prayers and help! This truly makes a difference and saves lives! Any women or families in need are welcome to come, no appointment needed! For more in-formation contact the center directly at 562/691-9395. The address is 860 E La Habra Blvd. La Habra, 90631.
