Gary’s Message September 1 st marks the beginning of the Ecclesiastical calendar. As we enter this new Church year it is easy to look ahead at the exciting ministries that are to come. However, at this moment, I’d like to express my sincerest gratitude to the faithful Stewards of our Church . . . YOU!! Thank you! St. Demetrios is a welcoming community. We have proven time and time again that we know how to make others feel at home and graft the newcomer into the parish family. I was pleased when a stranger stopped me in a local grocery store and asked me if I was the Priest at the “Greek” Church. She proceeded to ex- plain how helpful and welcoming our Festival Workers were. “They said, ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ It really made me feel like I was visiting someone’s home.” She continued, “When I didn’t understand what a certain dish was, a wonderful woman explained it to me. It was so pleasant!” Proudly I said, “YES! They are full of love! I’m glad you enjoyed yourself. Thank you for coming!” I went on to continue my shopping. “Wait,” she said and then asked, “Who trained them?” “What do you mean train?” She continued, “Well, how did you get a staff of employees to work like that?” “They’re not ‘employees,’ they are parishioners. They’re members of our Church, volunteers.” I explained. “Really??!!” she said surprised. “Yup,” I said proudly. Such a wonderful compliment! That is exactly the sentiment we should always strive to accomplish. This is a compliment I hear, not only at the Festival, but also from Sunday visitors. This Philoxenia (a com- pound word literally translated “philo”- friend “xenia”- strangers, means hospitality, but more so, the welcoming of strangers) is an attribute not only of our Greek heritage, but a doctrine of our Faith. It is the Gospel truth. To be complimented with such praise is noteworthy. Usually people go out of their way to complain, and receiving such commendation is almost against the norm. I am proud to serve a community full of such loving people. When Fr. Seraphim, from St. Nicholas Church in Ta- coma, WA, visited us this summer he mentioned our hospitable characteristics. He was boarding the plane in Seattle for LAX. AS he took his seat a passenger asked, “Are you an Orthodox Priest?” Father said, “Yes, I am.” The gentleman asked, “From here (Seattle) or there (Los Angeles)?” Father responded, “Here. I am travelling to LA to visit my family.” “Great,” said the stranger, “Where will you be on Sunday for services?” Fr. Seraphim said, “I’ll be at a parish in Camarillo.” “With Fr. Gary!” exclaimed the passenger. “Yes,” Father responded, then asked surprised, “you know Fr. Gary?” “Yes. My name is Ken and I am good friends with the Vegos family. We go to the church for a variety of events and the people there are so loving and kind. You are really going to enjoy it! Say hi to Fr. Gary for me.” Father sat in his seat and shook his head, thinking, “What a small world.” The impact our hospitality, PHILOXENIA, has on visi- tors is tremendous and unforgettable. You offer the love of God, in the simplest way, when you look someone in the eye and offer a sweet exchange. Such an easy way to practice the Living Gospel. I am also grateful that the Church has been full the last several weeks. Everyone has been participating and of- fering great glory to God through the Divine Liturgy. There are many things to appreciate and be thankful for here at St. Demetrios! Not only are we full of warmth and welcoming love, we are a group of hardworking and dedicated individuals. The Festival Steering Committee issued a challenge at the beginning of the summer asking that we meet the greatest of expectations at this year’s festival. Not only did we meet the goal but exceeded it by $5,000.00. I am consistently amazed at the outpouring of love you display. When asked for an extra collection to raise funds for a missionary’s trip you all gave generously. When called on to support the Rescue Mission you all come through. A shortage of prosfora (the bread used as the host for Divine Liturgy) is met with an abundance of love! This is especially encouraging! I am on cloud nine because I serve a great parish. A community that serves Christ and loves His Church. I pray that I can show you the love and enthusiasm that you have displayed during these last several weeks! I am overrun by emotion when the people around me exhibit Christ’s love and likeness! GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

Parish Council President’s Report By Joanne Mirras Knauss

The phrase "dog days of summer" comes from the rising of the star Sirius, which Greek astrolo-gy associated with heat and lethargy. That certainly fits with the end of August in Camarillo -- August 26th was the hottest day of the year, and this year is hotter than usual!

But that doesn't mean that St. Demetrios has slowed down. There are SO MANY THINGS TO DO.

If you golf, or eat dinner, there is still time to register for the annual church Golf Classic and Dinner. This is a hugely fun event, with golfers (both good and bad) playing a round at Sunset Hills Country Club, before sitting down to dinner and silent auction. Even if you don't win on the links, you can still walk away with AMAZING SWAG - everything from gift certificates, bottles of wine, video game systems -- literally hundreds of other prizes. Please come join us!

And, of course, this is the time for us to make sure we are fulfilling our Stewardship pledge. Summer is over, and we are entering into the last quarter of the year. Are you up to date on your Stew-ardship? So, as you plan the rest of the year, as well as your Christmas gift-giving, please make sure that that St. Demetrios is included in your budget. Stewardship is the most important source of fund-ing for our church – it comes directly from all of us, the members of the parish. So, as we enter the sea-son for the celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior this coming season, remember to support the community with whom you share that joy.

Parish Council President Joanne Mirras Knauss.

Our mission is to make Orthodox

Christian Steward-ship a way of life,

which acknowledg-es accountability,

reverence, and re-sponsibility before

God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to

promote spiritual growth and

strengthen faith. Becoming a Stew-

ard begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our

love, loyalty and trust and act on

those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as

a gift from Him. Stewardship calls

on the faithful to cheerfully offer

back to God a por-tion of the gifts with

which they have been blessed.

*GOARCH Stewardship 2019

Faith is our trust in God. Faith is our trust that He watches over us and has a plan for us. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11. Stewardship of our faith in Jesus calls us to do all things that protect and strengthen the faith that lies within us. Taking time to continue to grow and learn about our Orthodox Faith, praying to God for our understanding and guidance, and worshiping with others as the Body of Christ-all these things protect and strengthen our faith. As we continue to strengthen and protect our faith, it will shine to others through our ac-tions which are motivated by our love for God by offering our time, talent, and treasure to Him, through Christ’s Holy Church. Thank you for being stewards of the faith and offerings to God so that His will is accomplished in the world.

There is still time to join us as a Steward of the Faith. Stewardship Pledge Cards are located in the Narthex and available on our website. For more

information, please email us at [email protected] or contact our Stewardship Committee.

Building Fund By: Mary Freeth

The Building Fund currently has $189,000 in our ac-count. This is due to an extremely successful 2019 Festival. The Festival netted $105,000 in profit. This is the best result so far for our festival and everyone should be very proud of this accomplishment. It means that we are in a good position to pay our monthly mortgage expenses of $12,500. Our 25th Annual Golf Tournament honoring Fr. Gary and his extended family will take place on September 9th. We hope that we will also have a successful tourna-ment so that we can have a good safety net in the event of any future issues. We do plan to construct a permanent sign on the property. This project is cur-rently in process and awaiting permit approval. This is all great news….but the not so good news is that our mortgage comes due on 12/18/2025 which 6 1/4 years from now. The balance on the mortgage is currently $1.7 million. The Arbor loan of $250,000 comes due only 2 years later. We still have a lot of work to do to make this happen. Please contemplate a Building Fund donation or pledge. As always, your support is much appreciated! Thank You and God Bless You! Mary Freeth

Do you enjoy reading and discussing Christian books? Here is an opportunity to meet friends, new and old, have lively discussions and enjoy the fellowship of fellow book lovers. All are wel-come! The St. Demetrios Christian Book Club will be meeting once again in the early Fall. Starting our 3rd season of the Book Club in September, (date of meeting to be determined). We will be celebrat-ing and discussing our next book, "The Mountain of Silence" by Kyriacos C.Markides. This book was recommended to us by Abbottess Mother Victoria from the St. Barbara Monastery. In an engaging combination of dialogues, reflec-tions, conversations, history, and travel infor-mation, Markides continues the exploration of a spiritual tradition and practice he began in "Riding With the Lion". In his new book, Markides fol-lows Father Maximos, one of Mount Athos's monks, to the troubled island of Cypress. As Fa-ther Maximos establishes churches, convents, and monasteries, in this deeply divided land. Markides is awakened anew to the magnifi-cent spirituality of the Greek orthodox Church. The book club meets every 4-6 weeks at the church to discuss the book we are reading. Bring an appetizer, not mandatory, but thoroughly en-joyed, and enjoy the fellowship of all who enjoy reading. We are a friendly group and all are wel-come to join us. If you need more information, please contact, Linda Peters, 805-340-4695.

2019-2020 Schedules We are still in need of the meeting dates for your Ministry, as the calendar will begin fill-ing up very fast! To ensure you get the dates you want please email them over to Candice via email at [email protected]. She will reach out to you if there is a conflict with the dates you have requested.

DON’T WAIT ANY LONGER!

The St. Demetrios Prayer Warriors are a group of peo-ple dedicated to corporate praying for individuals or groups who are in need of prayer. An email is sent out to our warriors and we pray, hopefully daily, for the people on the list.

Corporate prayer is an im-portant part of prayer life within the parish. Acts 12:1-11, "About that time, Herod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword; and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he pro-ceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, and deliv-

ered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intend-ing after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in pris-on; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the Church. (that's us!)

A Prayer for someone

who is ill:

O Lord Jesus Christ our God, Who did patiently endure the scourging and wounding of Your most holy Body, that You might save the souls and bodies of Your people, look graciously, we beseech You, upon the suffering body of this Your servant (Name) and give him (her) strength to en-dure patiently whatsoever You shall see fit to lay upon him (her). Bless the means

Prayer Warriors by: Linda Peters employed for the working out of his (her) cure, granting that he (she) may so endure his (her) sufferings in the flesh that the wounding of his (her) body may be to avail for the correcting and salva-tion of his (her) soul, for Yours it is to show mercy and to save, O Christ our God; and to You do we send up Glory, as to Your Eternal Fa-ther and Your All Holy, Good and Life creating Spir-it, both now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen.

If you, or someone you know is in need of prayer, or you would like to become a pray-er warrior, please email

[email protected] or go through the website and select "Prayer Request".

Both Scouts/BSA Troop 808 (boys) and Scouts/BSA Troop 1808 (girls) attended summer camp at the Ven-tura County Council's Camp Three Falls this past sum-mer. It was reported that the Scouts had fun with the events at camp including swimming, archery, rifle and shotgun shooting, cooking, pioneering skills including knots and lashings, hiking, cycling, model rocketry, and a great many other traditional Scouting and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activi-ties. Each evening also provided opportunities for as-tronomy, night hikes, wilderness survival, and other activities). With the opportunities that availed themselves to the Scouts, it's no wonder that they came home with a

good number of merit badges and rank advance-ment. The troops have a very active year planned and the calendars will be available soon for those who may be interested in joining us. Cub Scout Pack 3808 had some summer day hikes and overnight camping events and will be resum-ing its meeting schedule with a "Meet and Greet" on Wednesday, September 4th for new and return-ing Cub Scouts and parents. Boys and girls in T-K through 5th grades are invited. A flyer is attached. Respectfully submitted, Lou

Have you visited the St. Demetrios Book Store yet? Our little book store is located in the Narthex of the church. You will find books for young and old, icons, and jew-elry and a few surprises. You won't find a price on these items, it is all by donation. Pick the items your interested in and give us a donation (amount is between you and God!). If you don't see what you are look-ing for, let me know and I can look into finding the item for you. If you have any questions, contact Linda Peters (805) 340-4695. Or send me an email at [email protected]

The Daughters of Penelope would like to congratulate our scholarship recipients, Maria Tangelos, daughter of Helen Tangelos and Zoe Ise, daughter of Chris and Maria Ise, and granddaughter of Elaine Louros and the late George Lou-ros They are both amazing young women, who are a credit to their family and community. We wish them continued suc-cess in their future endeavors.

The Daughters and Ahepans invite you to attend our annual scholarship BBQ on October 12, so that we may continue to support our youth in this manner.

The Daughters will resume monthly meetings on September 7, at 10:30 am, at St Demetrios

Coffee Hour by: Jody Brown Coffee hour: A Path to Higher Grounds

A coffee hour is actually a congregation, with refresh-ments. So what are the in-gredients of a successful cof-fee hour? As we know, cof-fee hours don’t just happen. They take conscious effort and some committed people. Volunteers willing to host a coffee hour!!

Coffee hour is more than

small talk and a cup of cof-fee. Congregants are spiritu-ally nourishing one another. I’ve seen tears assuaged, courage transmitted, prayers whispered in the corner, and sermons positively dis-cussed. At is best, a church coffee hour is a venue for the Holy Spirit to work.

As we start the new ecclesi-astical year your coffee hour ministry is dedicated to con-

tinue this special time we all share together after Liturgy. We would love to have you share any celebrations with your church family, or if you are planning a remembrance of a loved one to consider hosting a coffee hour. Please contact Jody at [email protected] or call/text (805)402-3696.

Wednesday’s at 7PM: September 11th, 18th and 25th Are you seeking to know more about our faith as Orthodox Christians? Every Wednesday night. Please consider at-tending the Paraklesis service at 6pm at the church followed by Bible Study. If you have any questions, or need further information, please contact the Church office, 805-482-1273. We are studying the Acts of the Apostles. Step by step, we review the development of the Disciples. Learn and grow as we witness their transformation in faith.

Tag! You're it! St. Demetrios Acts of Kindness is a great oppor-tunity to brighten up someone's day! It can be as easy as maybe paying a bill/tab for another, a nice note to buying a cup of coffee for some-

Paraklesis to the Theotokos (Supplications to the Mother of God)

Wednesday’s at 6PM, September 11th, 18th and 25th

Paraklesis (Greek: Παράκλησις) or Supplicatory Canon in the Orthodox Church is a service of supplication (appeal) for the welfare of the living. It can be addressed to a specific Saint, but more often is offered to the Most Holy Theotokos. These intercessions are sought through the chanting of the supplica-tory canon together with psalms, hymns, and prayerful peti-tions. Names of the living (especially those suffering from a physical or spiritual illness) can be offered to be mentioned during the service. Please indicate that the names are for the “Tuesday Paraklesis.”
