MESSAGE OF THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH
Your Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios of America, most honorable
Exarch of the Atlantic
and Pacic Oceans, beloved brother in the Holy Spirit and
co-celebrant of our Modesty; gracebe with Your Eminence and peace
from God.
It is with a joyous heart that we are sending, once again, a
greeting of love to our children of the Holy Archdiocese of America
on behalf of the Holy Mother Great Church of Christ, on the
occasion of the publication of this Yearbook for the year of the
Lord 2016. Te geographical distance that separates us does not at
all hinder the relationship between
us, as we have repeatedly pointed out, because our union rests
mainly on an unshakeable foundation, on the rock of faith and on
the celebration of the Bloodless Sacrice. Initiated by the Holy
Baptism into the Church, in the Body of the Lord that is in the
world, we become, by the Holy Eucharist, of the same body and blood
with Christ. Hence, we become bonded with
one another through blood, renewing and strengthening in a certain
way the relationship thatresults from the fact that all of us are
descendants of Adam. As Apostle Paul says:Tere is one body and one
spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to
your call, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of
us all, Who is above all and through all and in all
(Eph. 4: 4-6).
In order, however, for this gif of the Lord to become active
reality, our own volition is required, which means that we need to
manifest our intention to follow that path, by making the requisite
eff orts, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the
bond of peace (Eph. 4: 3), so that we may be one (cf. John 16
11), fullling thus the need that appears in the Hierarchal prayer
of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wishing to bring to fruition this
union, we invoke the help of the Giver of all, God, and this
is the reason why in all prayers of the Church we pray for the
unity of all . At another point ofthe Divine Liturgy the
priest proclaims: having prayed for the unity of the faith and for
the com- munion of the Holy Spirit, let us commit ourselves and one
another, and our whole life to Christ our God. Tat means that
the gifs that are most necessary for us are the unity among us and
the communion with God. Seeking therefore, these two, we abandon
ourselves and all our petitions with condence in the will of the
Lord.
Unity on the one hand is accomplished through the pursuit of peace
among all, as the Apostle Paul urges: if possible, so far as it
depends upon you, live peaceably with all (Rom. 12: 18).
On the other hand, its realization can not be better built than
through the cultivation of the love for one another, the love
between us. Afer all, Christ established it as the criterion of
authenticity of His disciples: by this all men will know that you
are my disciples, if you have love for one
another (John 13: 35). Our Lord Jesus Christ gives us
also the measure of love and the unity accomplished through it in
His Hierarchal prayer by saying: even as thou, father, art in me,
and I in thee, that they also may be one in us (John
17:21).
In such a blessed state of unity, in which there is reciprocal
inclusion without the abolition of the diff erences of the
hypostases, we have already entered the Kingdom of Heaven, where
the coordinates of the temporal world, place and time, cease to
exist, and love prevails. We wish upon the clergy and laity
of the Holy Archdiocese of America to foretaste of this condition
during their life on earth under the restless leadership of your
beloved Eminence, bestow upon all our paternal and Patriarchal
wishes and blessings and bless the publication of the Yearbook,
praying to the Lord and God to grant you His grace and mercy,
strengthen you in your daily battle so that all of us may
experience the apostolic condition being in full accord and of one
mind (Phil. 2: 2).
November 2, 2015 † Bartholomew Archbishop of
Constantinople beloved brother in Christ
