Today’s Old Testament selection, from Isaiah’s “Fourth Song of the Suffering Servant of God,” describes God’s Servant as one who “gives his life as an offering for sin” (Isaiah 53:10) and celebrates the mighty power of that self-offering: “through his suffering, my servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear” (53:11). As always during Ordinary Time, this Old Testament reading prepares us for today’s longer form Gospel. Jesus incarnates the redemptive suffering that Isaiah foresaw in the offering of God’s Servant, as well as the covenantal restoration that the Servant’s sacrificed achieved. The reading from Hebrews confirms our finding peace in continually learning from Jesus, whatever our deepest flaws and trials: for Jesus, our “great high priest” (Hebrews 4:14) is not “unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,” for Jesus was “tested in every way” that we are (4:15).

SELF-EXAMINATION Knowing that Jesus’ throne of glory is also a “throne of grace,” from which Jesus bestows “mercy and grace for timely help” (Hebrews 4:16), today’s Gospel suggests sincere self-examination: How do we approach Jesus and make our requests? What do we ask for: what Jesus wants us to do or, like James and John today, do we demand “whatever we want” from Jesus? Does the world in which we live and work focus our hearts on glory to the right and power on the left? Or does “the cup we drink,” “the baptism” we’ve received inspire us to gladly become servants of all, like the Jesus who has made us his disciples? Do we also avoid imitating the “indignant ten” other Apostles who rebuked James and John? Or are we also quick to see the errors of others and rash in passing judgment on them? How do we live in response to Jesus who gave his life “as a ransom for many”?

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION October 10, 2021

Adult Envelopes $3,463.80 Loose $101.00 Monthly $400.00 On-Line Giving (39 families) $1,698.00 Total $5,662.80 Amount budgeted for Weekly Offertory $7,096.00 Over / (Under) - ($1,433.20)

Thank you for your generosity!

If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others. Pray daily to become less self-centered and to become more God-centered.

THE HUMANITY OF JESUS CHRIST All three readings today support—each in its own way, of course—a reflection on the humanity of Jesus Christ and how that humanity played a key role in the drama of our salvation. Although not chosen specifically to coordinate with the other two readings, today’s second reading does in fact carry forward the theme of Christ’s humanity in a remarkable way. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews highlights the solidarity that exists between Jesus and us, precisely because in his human nature Jesus has known the same sufferings and testing that are our own experience. Because he can “sympathize with our weaknesses,” we can “approach the throne of grace to receive mercy.” For the author of Hebrews, the humanity of Jesus was an essential requirement for his redemptive death, as well as an invitation to us to find in Jesus someone with whom we can identify in our daily struggles

LEGION OF MARY

INFORMATIONAL MEETING IS SET All those who are interested (men or women) and want to know more about what the Legion of Mary is all about, are asked to attend an informational meeting this Thursday, October 21st at 6:30pm at St. Edward Church. A signup sheet is available on the bulletin table or you may call the parish office. The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and with the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, are dedicated to give

Love, Honor, Prayer, and Service to God and Church.

LIVING ROSARY Next Sunday, World Mission Sunday, October 24th, at 12:00 Noon, our parish along with Seven Dolors Parish will create a Living Rosary in front of St. Edward Parish (outside) with parishioners from both parishes. Volunteer parishioners, organizations, families and children are needed from both churches to participate. A total of 60+ volunteers (young and not so young) will be needed. A sign-up sheet is available on the bulletin table or you may call Kathy at 814-227-8025, Jeanne at 724-446-9397, or Diane at 724-446-0213. You may also email Kathy at [email protected].

ST. EDDIE’S SPAGHETTI DINNER Sunday, November 7 On Sunday, November 7th, the Altar Rosary Society will host the St. Eddie’s Spaghetti Dinner from 12:00-5:00pm in Edwardian Hall to benefit the parish! Next weekend, October 23/24, our parish will celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year’s theme is “We cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). Pope Francis reminds us that, “as Christians, we cannot keep the Lord to ourselves,” as we “recall with gratitude all those men and women who by their testimony of life helps us to renew our baptismal commitment to be generous and joyful apostles of the Gospel.” In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries by our Baptism, as it offers each of us an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the poor and marginalized in more than 1,111 mission dioceses. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers and be generous in next week’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

GROWING SUPPORT FOR OUR FAITH COMMUNITY Look for our upcoming communications about how to increase your stewardship efforts and to thank you for your support. Please see the special insert in the bulletin this weekend.

ALL SOULS’ DAY The commemoration of the faithfully departed is celebrated by the church on November 2nd. Prayer for the dead reaches deep into our human history, and it has been our custom from the earliest days of the Church. The belief that our prayers can be of assistance to the dead is a treasured tenet of our

Catholic faith. We profess it every time we recite the Nicene Creed: “I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.” On Tuesday evening, All Souls’ Day, November 2nd at a special 7:00pm Mass, we will remember the deceased of our parish family in a special way who died and were buried from our parish from November, 2020 — October, 2021. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us.

FEAST OF ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCES - Additional fliers are available on the bulletin table for your deceased loved ones intentions. Remembrances will remain in the church during the month of November and they will be remembered in a special way during the Prayers of the Faithful.
