Dear Fellow Parishioners; Christmas while it can be an exhausting time, (some can’t wait till the relatives leave!), a joyous time, a time of remembering that can be tinged with sadness or re-gret, it can also be just a time that slips by us. Or it might be a time for rethinking, of reimagining one’s life and one’s place in the world. It begins with the Incarnation, that moment where the Divine Spirit is infused into Human Flesh and the Son of Man is born. I am still struck by the incredible unlikeli-ness of this event. To imagine that the God of all crea-tion, the God of recently discovered immense black holes and almost eternal expanses of space can in a mo-ment of time become part of His creation and enter into our minute place of existence in this universe. Yet, that is what God chooses. The one who walked and still walks among us is loving us and showing us His way to unity with the Father. This is the story the Church con-tinues to preach and teach. If you have been distant from this community of faith, yet found yourself here today, know that you are most welcome. Come back and hear again the story of the Good News. If you are visiting family and came to Mass today to keep them happy consider making a commitment to return to your own parish. If you are part of the fabric of this parish community, thank you for engaging your faith in this way and I hope we can support and deepen that faith in the coming year. As pastor, I wish to thank all those who encourage, enli-ven and invigorate the Spirit in our midst. To the staff, the priests, deacons and many volunteers, thank you for your loving service to the Lord and to the community of St. Edward the Confessor/San Felipe de Jesus. This com-ing year I wish us all opportunities to deepen our faith in the Lord who has reached out to lead us home to Him. Together in Christ; Fr. Steve Sallot Pastor

December 25, 2011 † The Nativity of the Lord

Meditando la Palabra Meditating on the Word

December 25, 2011 † The Nativity of the Lord

Pbro. Mario A. Juárez

The Gospel of Luke that we read Christmas Eve presents to us images with definite contrasts. The most important differ-ence is between power and impotence. On one hand, we have Caesar Augustus, representing power; he can order a worldwide census to show his power and to collect taxes in order to retain his empire. On the other hand, there is Beth-lehem, the city of David, and a manger; no elegant imperial garments but poor clothes; no palace guards but simple shepherds, no messenger with a decree from the emperor but an angel of the Lord, who announces “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests”. Caesar Augustus is not the one that can give the authentic message of peace! He is more concerned about his power, taxes, war, and keeping his imperial title. There cannot be true peace in our human history if we attempt to reach it by means of people like him. A lasting peace must come from above, from a manger and the cross. As symbolized by the shepherds, only those who lack power are able to listen to the angels proclaim the true message of peace. For the world, this message is absurd and insane… But we must remember that tonight we celebrate not Caesar Au-gustus, but the son of Mary and Joseph wrapped in swaddling clothes. The reign of Caesar Augustus, disappeared long ago; the reign of God made man, Jesus, is still here and will one day come to its completeness. We must ask ourselves if this situation has changed today. Is there space and acceptance in our world for the one that Isaiah once called Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father of future ages, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9: 5)? Do we continue to wait for our security and peace to come from cities of power like Washington, Moscow or Beijing? Do we continue listening to the proclamations of powerful people from this world and close our ears to the `celestial army' with its mes-sage of true peace? These questions must resonate tonight in our hearts and during the year. Let us ask our Lord, as we participate in the Eucharist of this beautiful day of Christmas, that there will always be a place in our heart for this mes-sage of salvation and peace that He offers to us. Father Mario A. Juárez

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from St. Edward

In Faith Formation This week :

Sunday December 25th– Merry Christmas!

Thursday December 29th 7:30pm– Baptism Class –in the Church

Weekday Religious Ed classes will be closed for the Christmas Holiday the weeks of December 19th and Dec. 26th. We will

resume class on Jan. 2nd, and 4th at 4:30pm. We wish you a blessed Christmas season!

The holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph The feast of the Holy Family (usually cele-brated the Sunday between Christmas and New Year’s –but this year held on Dec. 30), celebrates the family unit and the Holy Fam-ily of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. No matter what our age, we can find within the Holy Family love, hope and spiritual guidance useful and meaningful for our own family situation. By reflecting on the joys and hardships of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph we become encouraged that we, too, are paving the way to holiness within and through our own family. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, strengthen our family to love harder, forgive more often, and selflessly give the precious gift of time to each other. We ask your con-tinued blessing, Amen. --Gloria Fetta.

Respect Life

THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT TO LIFE Children truly are the family's greatest treasure and most precious good. Consequently, everyone must be helped to become aware of the intrinsic evil of the crime of abortion. In attacking human life in its very first stages, it is also an aggression against soci-ety itself. Politicians and legislators, therefore , as servants of the common good, are duty bound to defend the fundamental right to life, the fruit of God's will. Pope Benedict XVI
