"The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had
been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle."
The episode of the woman caught in adultery is a powerful
story. We have perhaps all felt as the woman has at some
point in our lives, surrounded by those who would condemn
us. The beauty of Christ's mercy at the end is clear and a
welcome relief as we all struggle to be good and holy people.
But have we ever imagined ourselves on the edge of the cir-
cle? Have we pictured ourselves in the sea of dusty robes?
Perhaps, we hope, we're hovering at the edge of the circle of
judgment. But we've all been there.
How easy it is to be righteous when someone else's reputa-
tion is at stake. When the small child is acting up in the gro-
cery store or on the plane. When another company has a
scandal break or a major error sets back their profits. Could it
be easy to pick up the stone and feel its weight and heft in
our hands? Because if we've got a stone in our hands, our
own righteous category is clear. Our judgment is our insur-
ance that we won't be on the receiving end of the criticism. If
we can point out a wrong, surely we are firmly in the right.
"'Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to
throw a stone at her' ? they went away one by one." This
Lent, not only are we invited to receive God's mercy, but to
show God's mercy. As the season begins to wind to a close,
consider those in your life you tend to judge the most
harshly. What is one concrete way you can drop your stone?

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR WAYS
TO EXPERIENCE GOD?
Members of the Society of St. Vincent de
Paul invite you to share in their ministry of
experiencing God in serving people living in
poverty. We see Christ in the poor because
Jesus told us” whatever you do to the least of my brothers and
sisters you do for me.”
The purpose of the St. Vincent de Paul Society is to fulfill the
two great commandments – love of God and love of neighbor.
Vincentians are not professionally trained social workers. We’re
people just like you. We have recognized there are needs in our
community and we are doing something about it by giving of
our Time, Talents, or Treasure to help those in need. What you
give and how much you give are up to you.
In our Community Outreach, we quietly and discreetly aid
needy families and individuals through personal home visits.
We seek the distressed, institutionalized and lonely, providing
comfort and aid. We go in pairs as Jesus taught us. Wherever
there is need, Vincentians go two by two and do what they can
to ease the suffering of their neighbors.
Where do you fit in? Wherever you are comfortable. Maybe
you have strong organizational skills, are good with household
budgeting, are a fix-it kind of person or are simply a good lis-
tener. Whatever your talent, somebody needs you.
Community Outreach not your thing? Most people are familiar
with the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. The Store is the en-
gine that makes our Community Outreach possible. If you have
a thing for clothes, like sales/merchandising, or are good at
checking things to see if they work, maybe you can help with
the delivery and pickups of merchandise, please consider a few
hours a week at the store. The rewards are there waiting for you.
