Message from the Director of Education In December, 2011, Eastern School District approved a three-year strategic planning process which centered on developing our schools as caring, professional and purposeful places of learning and excellence. This school report for 2011-2012 highlights the activities of your school and your efforts to achieve your school-based goals, in keeping with the District’s mission and its vision for the future. The information provided is very helpful as we continue to pursue excellence for our District through a planning process which emphasizes continued professional growth and development. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate each school on the success achieved to date as evidenced by this report. I acknowledge, with gratitude, the efforts of our teachers, administrators, support staff, parents and community representatives, particularly through schools councils. By working together, we can achieve the best possible learning environment for our students. I encourage you to dialogue with our stakeholders on this document and on our District objectives. As we move forward with our new Strategic Plan (2011-2014), I look forward to your continued support and cooperation in the achievement of the specific goals and objectives listed in this plan. Message from Principal

I am pleased to present our School Development Report for 2011-12.

This has been the final year of our four-year School Development Plan. I am pleased to report

that out school has made a great deal of progress in achieving our goals around student

achievement, the use and integration of technology and in promoting St. Edward’s School as a

safe and caring; healthy and active learning environment.

Next year we will again look inward and while building on our successes of the past four years,

begin a new School Development cycle. This process will involve all members of our school

community, students, parents and teachers.

I encourage you to read through our report and help us to celebrate our successes. It has been

an honour and a pleasure to have been part of this school for the past two years.

Overview of School

Our School Community

St. Edward’s school is a Kindergarten to Grade Six school in Kelligrews, Conception Bay South.

We have a population of 696 students who live in Foxtrap and Kelligrews. We offer French

Immersion as well Intensive Core French in Grade Six.

We have access to resources and supports from Eastern School District including Speech-

Roots of Empathy

This year one of our Grade Six classes participated in Roots of Empathy. Once a month

the classes would have a visit by a baby and mom/dad and the students would notice how the

baby has grown over the year and learned about empathy as well.

Breakfast Club

Again this year we operated a breakfast program four mornings a week here at St.

Edward’s. Each morning we served about 150 students a nutritious breakfast including cereal,

toast, cheese and fresh fruit. I must recognize the dedicated parents, grandparents and other

volunteers who make this program happen. A special thanks goes out to Mrs. Mary Abbott, Ms.

Tamara Wheaton and Ms. Kim Tuff for overseeing scheduling and buying supplies.

Family Literacy

The week of January 23 – 27 was Family Literacy Week across Canada. There were

several activities here at St. Edward’s to celebrate. They included a family literacy night, family

games night and a celebrity reading event. Guest readers included Mayor French, Minister

French and Mr. Gagnon among others.

Operational Issues for 2012-13

Operational Issue Intended Action To have all classes freshly painted To work with our school custodians to develop a time frame for each class.

To clean up bathrooms off the Gym so that they are accessible for use during school time and for various school functions.

To work with our maintenance supervisor to finalize a plan.

School Lockers in the Primary and Elementary section. The lockers in the Elementary section are in deplorable condition, they are very old, rusted, parts falling off, doors unable to close, etc. There are no lockers in the kindergarten section or grade 2 section of our building. They are currently using hooks on the wall outside of their classroom to hang their coats which poses a safety risk.

We will work with our maintenance supervisor to develop a plan to get approximately 300 new lockers to accommodate the needs of our students in Kindergarten, grade 2 and Elementary.

Appendix A – Summary of School Fundraising This school year brought many fun and exciting activities to our students and school community. All fundraising initiatives are approved through our school council and we try to limit what we do so that there is no overlap and there isn’t more than one event going on at a time. Fundraising activities for the 2011-12 school year included our sweat a thon and 50/50 draw. Through these fundraising initiatives, we raised approximately $20,000 which was used to purchase needed technology, resources and materials to support instruction and to optimize student learning. As well, $7000 was used to repair our playground equipment that was destroyed due to vandalism.
