thee…”. All the verbs in this prayer describe actions required for the life of renewal as

we seek God’s kingdom on earth.

In his incarnation, death and resurrection, Jesus Christ has given us the true

meaning of the new man: “That you may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God,

without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom you shine

as lights in the world” (Eph. 2: 15). The Christian is incorporated in Christ and discov-

ers in Jesus his existence and destiny. The Christian imitates Christ and walks accord-

ing to the precept of His gospel. “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ, Je-

    sus” (Phillip 2:5).

This life of renewal is not magic. It is a life of partnership and active synergy,

which we choose freely as an expression of our sincere fidelity. St. Paul writes:

“Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus

accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit” (Cor. 12:3).

Again in Eph. 6:10-20 St. Paul encourages us to be strong in the Lord and in the power

of his might. We are called to put on the whole armor of God, that we may open our

mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel.

We experience the life of renewal in our participation in the divine sacraments in

the Church. It means that our fidelity to the Lord invites us to reject the state of sin

that separates us from God, and deteriorates His image in us, consequently dragging

us back into the life of the ‘old man’. “Always bearing about in the body the dying of

the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we

which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus might

be made manifest in our mortal flesh” (2 Cor. 4:10-11). Our mortal life becomes

‘divine’ by His grace. Then all manner of living, thinking and doing will help us become

bonded with Jesus. This is the freedom, which is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It

is granted to the faithful who read and hear the word of God in their everyday reading

of the scriptures and in their daily prayers.

The kingdom of God is our life in Christ. Christ is the beginning and the ending

point of the kingdom. The life of the Christian belongs to God: “And whatsoever you do

in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Fa-

    ther by him” (Col. 3:17).

Let us pray that our liturgical experience of the Church’s divine services will en-

able us to discover the elements of the life of renewal, so that when we say, “Thy King-

dom come…” we shall stand before God and worship Him with great joy. Let us re-

spond favorably to this divine calling. Let us understand the teaching of His gospel,

apply it in our life and become worthy to be the children of God and the recipients of

the blessings of the Father. “Put all things under Him (Jesus) that God may be all in

    all” (I Cor. 15:28). Joseph E. Antypas

Wednesday 2/17 Parish Council Meeting @ 7:00 pm

On January 24 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate our Righteous

Mother, Blessed Xenia, the Fool for Christ's sake and Wonderworker of Saint

    Petersburg.

Xenia was married to a Colonel named Andrew; when she was 26 years old, her husband

died suddenly. Left a childless widow, Xenia gave away all that she had, and vanished

from St. Petersburg for eight years to live in a hermitage, learning the spiritual life.

When she returned to St. Petersburg, she wore her husband's military clothing, and

would answer only to the name of her late husband Andrew. She took up the life of a

homeless wanderer, and was abused by many as insane. She bore this with great pa-

tience, crucifying the carnal mind through the mockery she endured, and praying for her

husband's soul. She was given great gifts of prayer and prophecy, and often foretold

things to come. In 1796 she foretold the death of Empress Catherine II. Xenia reposed in

peace at age 71 in about the year 1800. Her grave became such a source of miracles,

and so many came to take soil from it as a blessing that it was often necessary to re-

place the soil. When a stone slab was placed over her grave, this too disappeared over

time, piece by piece. Saint Xenia is especially invoked for help in finding employment,

    lodging, or a spouse.

On this day, we also commemorate our Righteous Mother Xenia the merciful of

Rome; Hieromartyr Babylas of Sicily; and Venerable Philotheos, founder of Philotheou

monastery on Athos. By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy upon us and save us.

    Amen.

The Kingdom of God: Life of Renewal In the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, in the prayer before the Holy Gos-pel lesson, the priest quietly reads the following prayer: “Illumine our hearts, O Master

who loves mankind, with the pure light of thy divine knowledge. Open the eyes of our

mind to the understanding of thy gospel teaching; implant in us also the fear of thy

blessed commandment, that trampling down all carnal desires, we may enter upon a

spiritual manner of living, both thinking and doing such things as are well-pleasing into

    3

may glorify thee forever, One Divine Power worshipped in three Persons: Father, Son

    and Holy Spirit. Amen.

    PRAYER ON LEAVING THE CHURCH

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes

have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people: a light

to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

    CHURCH ETIQETTE

O Lord, sanctify those who love the beauty of your house.

When you enter the church, please remember that the church is a place of worship.

Please do not disturb others as they worship God.

Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Je-

mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display His perfect

Priest: The reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:35-43)

(For the Fourteenth Sunday of Luke)

At that time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road-

side begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told

him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on

me!” And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out

all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped, and commanded him

    5

to be brought to Him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want

me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.” And Jesus said to him,

“Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his

sight and followed Him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave

    praise to God.
