Cultivating the Fruit of Kindness
Once again we examine how cultivating a garden takes a
lot of work and time. If we are not willing to do the work
there will be no fruit. I have written about cultivating the
fruits of charity, joy, peace and patience. This week let’s
take a look at the spiritual fruit of known as kindness. I
remember the phrase from the video tape days, “Be Kind!
Rewind!” It is as if only a kind person would take the
time to rewind the tape so that the next viewer could start
from the beginning. And if I found a tape not rewound I
came unglued! I had a bit of wrath rather than kindness.
This notion of kindness is not too far off from the
Church’s understanding of kindness
Kindness describes a person who gives freely. He gives of
himself or from himself. This does not compare to the
kindness of God who lavishes his gifts on us. We see that
God is kind in that he gives us our very lives and the mean
to carry out our lives. God manifests his kindness most
perfectly when he is merciful and forgiving because he
prefers these things to punishment. We get the bulk of our
insight into Christian kindness from St. Paul. When the
Holy Spirit is with us and in us we can cultivate the fruit
of God’s kindness in our lives by being a merciful and for-
giving people. Once again this fruit is connected to God’s
love
Pull up the weeds of your wrath to let the Spirit’s kindness
grow in your soul. The next time you feel like sharing
your wrath you will be able to demonstrate God’s mercy
and forgiveness. In short you will share the fruit of the
Holy Spirit: Kindness.
Fr.Jeff
mucho trabajo y tiempo. Si no estamos dispuestos a hacer
principio. ¡Y si encontré una cinta no rebobinada, me
deshice!
to del Espíritu Santo: La bondad
