The Orange Ribbon

I still have people asking me about the orange ribbon campaign that St. Eugene Parish participates in.

The orange ribbon represents a prayer for persecuted Christians. Many Christians have been dressed in orange clothing (like criminals) and have been killed in cruel ways by ISIS. To date, more than 170,000 people (mostly Christians and Shiites) were killed in Iraq by ISIS. Christians face being wiped out from the Middle East within 10 years as they are killed by ISIS. Unfortunately, many world leaders are not talking about this genocide.

Wearing the orange ribbon means we will not be silent in the face of such human atrocities. We need to pray that the leaders in Iran and Iraq will be open to change and allow full rights and protection for our Christian brothers and sisters.

There are many causes in our world that need our prayers. We must continue to stand up for the rights of those persecuted for their religious beliefs. We must be a voice in our own country for the unborn, the elderly, and those sick in mind, body, or spirit.

If you are in need of an orange ribbon, let me know so I can order more for our parish.

Yours in Christ,

I want to thank all those who gave a donation toward our electronic sign. We were given a generous $10,000 & $5,000 gift for the project. Our collection on April 2 & 3 came to almost $6,000. Since we have roughly $22,000 of the $25,000 needed, we have decided to begin the process of repairing our sign. It will take up to 2 months to receive the new electronic boards, so please be patient. Thank you,

REDEMPTION Do you remember Peter on the night Jesus was arrested? He claimed he had never heard of Jesus. Today we are called to join Peter in testifying to the name of Jesus as he does in the first reading, and in proclaiming our love for him as Peter does in the Gospel passage. The powerful imagery of John’s vision in the second reading from the book of Reve-lation shows us the company we keep when we have faith in the name of Jesus. We join all living creatures, “countless in number” from “heaven, earth, under the earth, in the sea; everything in the universe” (Revelation 5:11, 13). The dignity and maj-esty described in each reading are in stark contrast to the dark and pitiful image of Peter and the other apostles at the time of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and cruci-fixion. What a relief that we can all be redeemed so completely! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

Libya is located on the northern part of the African continent. The situation for Christians in Libya is deteriorating. Life is increasingly difficult for them. Every Christian faces persecution from their own families and from the society around them. Throughout the country only a few meetings of Christians are scheduled intermittently. Christians often feel isolated. Pray that our Christian brothers and sisters in Libya will be able to protect themselves and find fellowship in their communities.

Highlighting Ministries

St. Eugene Eucharistic Ministers at Mass Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion in the Archdiocese of Chicago are mandated by the Episcopal Delegate to assist in the distribution of Holy Communion during Mass. Mandates are for a three-year period and are renewable. St. Eugene’s Eucharistic Ministers were first mandated in the mid-1970’s. A total of eight Ministers are needed for each weekend and Holy Day Mass (which includes the celebrant and any priests and/or deacons who may be present). St. Eugene currently has approximately 60 Eucharistic Ministers with a minimum of 20 to 25 scheduled each Sunday. Special Masses, such as Christmas, Easter and Holy Days are on a volunteer basis and volunteer sign-up sheets will be available in the sacristy about two weeks prior to the Holy Day. Eucharistic Ministers are assigned to specific weekend Masses on a rotating schedule of about every three weeks. A new schedule is posted quarterly (January, April, July, and October) and copies will be available for pick up in the sacristy in order for Ministers to know, in advance, the dates and times of their assignments. Anyone interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister at St. Eugene must be confirmed and a registered member of the parish. That person must attend one class before his or her name can be submitted to the Archdiocesan Episcopal Delegate for designation as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.

We offer full and part time pre-school for three year olds, full and part time pre-kindergarten for four year olds, and full time classes for kindergarten through grade 8. Pre-school parents have the option of three mornings (T-W-T), three full days (T-W-T), or five mornings (M-T-W-T-F), or five full days (M-T-W-T-F). Pre-Kindergarten parents have the option of five mornings or five full days.

Parents may also make appointments for individual tours at other times.

Participation in Labels for Education has declined in the past years. So, after 42 years, Campbell has come to the very difficult decision to discontinue the Labels For Education program. St. Eugene School will continue to collect the soup labels through the month of May. Thank you to the many parishioners who have clipped the labels and donated them to the school!

St. Eugene School is happy to announce a new grocery fundraiser called “The Giving Grocer.” Our first sale will be Saturday morning, May 14, at the Shaunessy Center. Please take a moment to look inside the brochure for quality products, many of which are being supplied by the same Market Day vendors that you are familiar with. Details including ingredients, nutritional information, and rec-ipes can be found at www.givinggrocer.com. Check out the Giving Grocer Facebook page. You will find St. Eugene on it and can order directly from that site. Here are some helpful hints.

Orders can be placed online – under Supporter, click on “place an order.” Our school ID is #34901.

Add the items you would like to purchase to your basket. (the enclosed order sheet can be used as a guide.) Once you have finished adding the items, they can be purchased by clicking on “view basket” at the right side of the screen. Enter your name, etc. All online orders must be purchased with Mastercard, Visa or Discover. You will receive a receipt sent to the email ad-dress you provided and you will also be notified of the pickup time on May 14.

If you are unable to order online just fill out the order sheet. Once all information is completed, cut along the dotted line and return the order form, along with a check/cash for payment. Pa-per orders will be accepted after Mass the weekend of April 16/17, and at the school office, or at the rectory by April 20. Please make sure all contact info is listed so we can call you with the pick up time.

All online or paper orders are due no later than April 20. For more information or if you have questions after an order is placed, please do not hesitate to

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER L , . P . B . W J L S . A

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
