The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Christ, is a feast day that honors God’s greatest gift to us. This

is the universal feast that began in the year 1624, in the city of Liege in northern France, when a priest of that diocese was elected and became Pope Urban IV.

Throughout the Church’s history, there’s always been a devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. The feast day the Body and Blood of Christ may have started officially in 1624, but the reality of the bread and wine being substantially changed into the body and blood of Jesus, comes directly from our Lord’s command, “This is my Body, this is my Blood, do this in memory of me.” In the Eucharist, Jesus is really, truly, substantially, and abidingly present together with His Soul and Divinity for the nourishment of the faithful. Our belief in the Real Presence is the reason we had a procession last Sunday around the church after the 11:30 a.m. Mass. Normally, the procession would have taken place today, but our eighth graders are graduating at 2:00 p.m. and I wanted to make sure the school faculty had time to set up the church.

Our belief in the Real Presence is also the reason we genuflect in front of the tabernacle. Of course, because of health reasons, it may be physically impossible for some people to genuflect. In these instances, a bow of reverence should be done in place of genuflection. What we must not do is ignore the tabernacle which contains the Real Presence of Christ. We must not walk right by the tabernacle without showing any reverence or acknowledgment. Often, at a wedding or a funeral, I see this take place. I believe the reason some catholics fail to acknowledge Our Lord in the tabernacle could be a result of poor spiritual formation, a lack of weekly Sunday worship, or even a lack of faith. We must pray for these brothers and sisters who have neglected their faith. Through our example, through catechesis, and through prayer, may those who question their faith be strengthened.

The feast of Corpus Christi is a feast of respect and love for the Body of Christ in the Eucharist, in ourselves, and in our brothers and sisters. Yours in Christ,

PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our attention on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlasting life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

ADORATION of the BLESSED SACRAMENT

Mondays in church 12:00 NOON - 8:00 pm

with Benediction at 7:45 pm

By His Eucharistic presence, Christ dwells in our mist.

Out of love He has enriched the Church with His unceasing presence. As God in former days dwelt in the temple

of Jerusalem, He now lives in our churches and chapels. He invites us to remain in close contact with Him. Through Eucharistic

Adoration we concentrate our attention on Him as we yield to the fascination of

His invisible gaze. Opening our hearts, we entrust all our petitions to Him.

POPE FRANCIS TWEET FOR THE WEEK

The Eucharist gives us strength to produce the fruits

of good works, and to live true Christian lives.

SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2018 THRU JUNE 30, 2019 The calendar year for the use of parish facil-ities by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require Au-gust scheduling, part or all of August may also be unavailable for use by parish and other organiza-tions. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2018 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2019. All organizations re-questing space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2018 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2018-19 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before final-izing plans for events.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The origins of today’s solemnity lie in thirteenth-century Belgium. In those days, people seldom received Holy Communion, and never from the chalice. A nun in a troubled convent, Juliana of Liège, devoted her life to stirring up love for the Eucharist, lobbying for a feast day to honor the Blessed Sacrament with Masses and processions. Juliana may have been inspired by the Ascension Day processions in nearby Bruges. Crusaders brought a treasure home to Bruges from Constantinople in 1204: a reliquary said to contain a cloth from Joseph of Arimathea with which he had helped prepare the body of Jesus for burial. The stain on the cloth was said to be the holy blood itself, and so the people of Bruges built a great basilica to house the relic. Bruges became a great center of pilgrimage because of this treasure, and the procession of the Holy Blood is still one of the greatest festivals in Belgium today. The bishop carries the relic through the narrow streets, and the people wear medieval costumes and act out scenes from the Bible. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

OUR PATRON, POPE ST. EUGENE I

HIS FEAST DAY IS JUNE 2

Pope St. Eugene I

The feast day of our Patron Saint is commemorated in the Roman martyrology on June 2, the day of

his burial at St. Peter’s. It is good to honor St. Eugene. His pontificate was very brief, from August 10, 654 to June 2, 657, but he accomplished a lot during that short time. He was a gentle and holy man who showed great charity to the poor. He was a great defender of the theological truth that Christ is one person with two complete and distinct natures: a divine nature consubstantial with the Father, and a human nature consubstantial with us. Pope St. Eugene I is a great Saint to call upon for intercession if you find yourself confronted with heresy.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS As warm weather is here, we would like to remind everyone that Sunday Mass is the most im-portant and solemn event of the week. It is not an “informal occasion.” As a consequence, the appro-priate attire for Mass should be characterized by modesty, dignity, and elegance. Clothing suitable for a picnic, or for the beach, can indicate a lack of respect for the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
