2016 ANNUALCATHOLIC APPEAL

COMMITMENT WEEKEND REFLECTION BY ARCHBISHOP BLASE J. CUPICH

THE HANDS OF GOD’S MERCY

It is a pleasure for me to speak to you today from Archbishop Quigley Center in this beautiful Saint James Chapel constructed many decades ago by the third Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Mundelein. At the beginning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, I invited every Catholic in the Archdiocese of Chicago to claim one or more of the corporal or spiritual works of mercy and make a real and practical commitment to do their designated work of mercy throughout the year. The observance of this year enables us to appreciate in a new way God’s mercy in our lives and to re-claim our responsibility to be the hands of God’s mercy in today’s world, as this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal theme expresses it. The readings for last Sunday and this Sunday help us understand that Jesus’ mission and purpose had a single focus—to bring the mercy of God into this world. We find this sense of Jesus’ merciful mission in today’s refrain for the responsorial psalm: “The Lord sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives.” When we walk in the footsteps of Jesus, we, too, bring God’s mercy to a world so much in need of it. The Annual Catholic Appeal enables us to practice the works of mercy. Our financial support helps those most in need in our own parishes, across the Archdiocese, and even in the larger world. Let the love of God and the love of others that Saint Paul describes in today’s second reading, and let the mercy of God so evident in the mission of Jesus take root in your lives. I invite you to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal. Learn how you can be the hand of God’s mercy. In the name of the Church, I thank you for your attention and your generosity.

THE GREAT HYMN TO LOVE It is doubtful that Saint Paul, when he sat down to write what we now know as the thirteenth chapter of First Corinthians, knew that he was penning what was to become one of the keystones of Christian ethics. In this brief passage, he set down ideals about love that have held fast through the centuries. Sometimes we may think that because these are ideals to which we aspire, we are excused from them in our daily living. But what Paul was writing was a letter to his friends, providing them with some sound advice about what it meant—and still means—to live in love, day by day, as a follower of Christ. We find in his words to his friends a broadening of the great commands of Jesus to love God and neighbor. To-day we hear what this love must look like in our own actions, and how it ought to guide our relationships with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

2017 MASS BOOK The Mass Book for 2017 opened

Tuesday, January 19, 2016 Consistent with Archdiocesan policy, there is one intention per Mass. To accommodate the additional requests of parishioners, collective or multi-Intentional Masses are scheduled at 9:00 am on Wednesday, and 11:30 am on Sunday. Since we have a large parish, we must allow people an opportunity to get specific days for Mass Intentions. Therefore, only five intentions may be given to an individual within the first two weeks that the book is open. An individual per-son may not take more than five Mass Intentions in a given month. Of these five Masses, no more than two should be listed in any given week. The above guidelines do not apply to the desig-nated Multi-Intentional Masses. A person can have a Multi-Intentional Mass every week if they desire it. However, since the intentions are read at Mass, no more than thirty intention should be taken in on any Multi-Intentional Mass. SINGERS WANTED!

Thursdays - 7:00 pm Church The St. Eugene Adult Choir will resume rehearsals on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 7 pm, in St. Eugene Church. All are welcome! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For the first four centuries or so, there seems not to have been a sense of marriage as a church insti-tution. Christians followed civil law, which kept the wedding in a family setting. Bishops wanted people to be good citizens insofar as possible, and so they recognized the government’s role in marriage. In general, they expected Christians to know that mar-riage was good, that marriage to other Christians was best, and to take it easy on the wild wedding parties. They agreed that marriage was a divine in-stitution, that Christ blessed it especially, and they loved referring to the miracle at the wedding feast of Cana. Still, even when Christianity became the offi-cial religion of the empire in 380, marriage remained a family matter. On wedding days people gathered in the bride’s house, where the father would “give her hand” to her husband, draping a garland of flowers over the cou-ple. There were no official words to say, there was no blessing to be given. Everyone walked in proces-sion to the bride’s new home for the concluding rites and the feast. In the Eastern Empire, it soon became customary to invite a priest or bishop to give a bless-ing at the meal or the day before. It was a nice thing to do, completely optional, but had a “photo-op” feel to it that was widely emulated. Before long, at least in the East, it looked as if the priest were joining the couple in marriage and blessing the union. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Fifty Years and Counting The Biblical Revolution of Vatican II

One of the most remarkable achievements of the Second Vat-

ican Council was the impetus it gave the biblical Renewal within the Catholic Church. The Council’s Decree “Dei Ver-bum” (“the Word of God”) on divine Revelation and its pas-

toral recommendations brought a new energy and perspective to the Church, a renewal that fifty years later is still in pro-

cess.

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to

God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish

community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and

empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-

tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our

participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the

needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all

people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
