From the Pastor’s Desk… This past Tuesday, September 11th, our country celebrated Patriot’s Day. Our school began this day with a prayer service in front of the flag pole outside the Shaunessy Center. It was a day that our school traditionally honors all of our First Responders: our military personnel, our police officers, our fire fighters, and our medics. On this day our entire school community gathered outside to pray for those who, each day, put their lives in danger so that we might be kept safe. We sang patriotic songs and reflected upon the bravery and heroism of those men and women who not only came to the aid of thousands of individuals on September 11, 1991, but continue to do so each and every day. I have to say it was a most beautiful and touching ceremony and a great way to start the day. Thank you to all in our school community who helped to plan this very special day.

***************

One of the truly beautiful and generous ways that we as Catholics give back to our community is by our involvement and participation in the many opportunities that are provided to us at the parish level and are much needed to serve a community the size of ours. Currently, I am referring to the genuine need for additional Liturgical Ministers - especially Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors. You may have noticed that on occasion we are short at some Masses. This should never be the case as so many of our parishioners are here at the same Mass faithfully every week. We really need YOU now to step up and join these important ministries in service to our community. I am sincerely asking all in our parish 16 years and older to consider becoming a Eucharistic Minister and/or Lector. We will provide all the necessary training and formation. All are welcome, and I mean this sincerely. In particular, although ALL are encouraged to participate, I would love to see our younger single and/or married parish members join our ranks. One of the observations that has caught my attention here is that we are not currently offering the option of receiving both the Body and Blood of Christ at our Masses. The reason we are not able to offer this fullest expression of Christ’s gift of himself to us is because we have nowhere near the number of Eucharistic Ministers that we would need to provide this opportunity. So, I sincerely ask YOU to consider offering the gift of your service to assist our parish at this time. All you need to do is fill out the form below and either mail it back to the parish office or simply drop it in the collection basket in the next couple of weeks. We will then get back to you with regard to when your training and formation will be provided. I realize that as your new pastor I don’t have the advantage of knowing many in our community yet, so I am hoping that you will respond to my invitation to fill this pressing need in our parish. The larger the number of ministers we have, the less frequently you would need to be scheduled. Ideally, I would love to have enough ministers that you would only be scheduled once or twice a month. So, I implore you, please step up! We need YOU!

LISTENING AND RESPONDING There are three interwoven themes in today's readings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much distress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has listened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don't always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God's promptings will lead us in the right way. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

CRISIS PREGNANCY HELPLINE 1-800-400-4205

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In this country, we don't name our churches "The Fourth Avenue Catholic Church," but rather seek a patron saint or mystery of faith. We inherit this tradition from an old Roman custom via medieval England. Interestingly, that has not been the practice elsewhere, and parishes abroad often do carry just the name of the neighborhood. In Ireland, the Roman (English) practices didn't take hold, and so churches are known simply by the street they are on, or by a nickname. Saint Francis of Assisi in Dublin is often called "Adam and Eve" after a pub in the same street. The pub sign is an interesting carving of our first parents, so they become patrons by default. Increasingly in the United States, we are seeing a familiar European pattern emerge when a few churches, each bearing the name of a patron saint or mystery, are gathered into one parish that bears a different name. Thus, we might hear of a parish of "Midvalley City" comprised of Saint Mary, Saint Francis, and Saint Ursula churches. Once a church has been consecrated, its name may not normally be changed. Therefore, when parishes are merged, a new name is given to the parish, which may or may not be that of a heavenly patron, but the church buildings retain their names. In the process, we have lost sight of some worthy patrons of old, but have also seen new parishes open dedicated to twentieth-century saints like Edith Stein, Katharine Drexel, and Mother Teresa. OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
