Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time 1 February 1, 2015

WHOSE AUTHORITY? A man stands on your front doorstep, holding a Bible: “Good afternoon. May I share a few words of Christian truth with you?” “Sure. Where do you get this truth?” “From the Bible, of course.” “That’s your authority? The Bible?” “Yes, it’s the only authority for Christians.” “Can you prove that from the Bible?” “What do you mean?” “I mean I don’t believe the Bible claims to be the sole rule of faith. Please show me where the Bible claims such a status for itself.” Sometimes the conversation goes more like this: “Good afternoon. May I share a few words of Christian truth with you?” “No, I’m a Catholic.” The door closes. Many door-to-door proselytizers have good intentions. They want to convert you to the “truth”—as they see it. From their perspective, the Bible is the sole authority for the Christian faith. Some are taught that Catholics are prohibited from reading the Bible or know nothing about the scriptures. However, not only do we have full access to the Bible, but we hear segments of it proclaimed every time we celebrate Mass. In today’s first reading God gives Moses the right to speak with divine authority to the people of Israel. In today’s readings Jesus and Moses are recognized as speaking and acting with the authority of God. Both Jesus and Moses acted as a bridge between the people and God. For us the scriptures are a bridge for God’s truth, but so are the sacraments and the lived experience of the Church—what we call Tradition. It is part of our responsibility as disciples of Jesus to learn from the scriptures, to listen attentively at Mass, to read scripture prayerfully for ourselves, and to learn more about the Bible through reading, studying, and learning with others.

“No, soy católico”.

Stephen Ministry As of July 7, 2015 will have completed our 13 years of ministering to the fellow parishioners at St. Frances!! Our parish was enrolled in Stephen Ministry in 2002, after Father Jenkins had decided that the care system provided by Stephen Ministry best met the needs of our parish. Lay caregivers (people like you and I) called Stephen Ministers (after St. Stephen), provide one-to-one care to the bereaved, hospitalized terminally ill, unemployed, handicapped, home-bound, and others facing a crisis or life challenge. The ministry helps our priests by providing follow-up care for as long as needed. Our care receivers benefit from a strong support system, and our Christian friendship and love. We Stephen Ministers benefit through the spiritual growth we experience from being involved in a meaningful ministry, and everyone benefits from knowing that additional care will be available for us and our loved ones if we should need it. Those of us who serve on Stephen ministry love and believe in the ministry because you see the results in our dear care receivers. We know the difference this ministry makes in our parish, but in order to keep it a viable ministry we need to have more dedicated people join us… people like you. Please keep the ministry in mind and in your prayers!!!

Thank you to all who have pledged to our Generous Heart Campaign. If you missed the opportunity to join us in pledging to our Generous Hearts Debt Campaign, don’t worry. The materials are available in the parish office and in the pews of the church. Your commitment and contributions are always needed and helpful.

Healing Broken Hearts-One Weekend at a Time.

Pope Francis said: “God is the light that illuminates the darkness, even if it does not dissolve it, and a spark of divine light is within each of us.” Sometimes situations and decisions from the past can place us into darkness where we feel disconnected and alone. If you have emotional or spiritual wounds as a result of a past abortion, please consider attending our upcoming Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat February 27 – March 1, 2015. Rachel’s Vineyard is a unique sensory based program for both men and women, which integrates emotional, psychological and spiritual dimensions to provide an effective recovery process for those hurt by abortion and life’s circumstances. By experiencing God’s profound love and mercy, let 2015 become the year you rekindle the spark of divine light which is within all of us. Participation is strictly confidential. For more information, please contact Mary Huber at 909-475-5353 or [email protected] or visit the website Rachelsvineyard.org.
