From the desk of Father James Welcome to Catholic Schools Week 2018! This year’s theme is Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. We are fortunate to have our own Catholic school ministry here at St. Francis, where every student is given the opportunity to learn, serve, lead and succeed as a member of the St. Francis community and the community at large. Catholic schools, in general, and St. Francis Catholic School specifically, offer more than just a solid foundation of knowledge for our students. Faith-based, values-based education is a living education that cannot be found in pub-lic schools. Our students graduate with experience and knowledge that goes beyond the textbook. Students at St. Francis are also given many opportunities to serve and look to parents, grandparents and other members of the community to set the example and instill a servant’s heart within. The students support the service goals of the parish, and in turn, it is our ministry to support students and help them learn the true meaning of serv-ant leadership. All students participate in service, from Kindergarten to 8th Grade. Service projects include the Christmas toy drive for children of service members and hospitality for the homeless at Blanchet House in Port-land. Leadership is not something that can be taught in a classroom. The Catholic school experience is one that fos-ters leadership within our students. Student government at St. Francis School is one place our children start learn-ing the leadership skills they will hone during their lifetime. All parents desire for their children to be successful, no matter which path they take in life. Pray for our current and future students that they will achieve success in their calling.

In the Spirit of St. Francis…

In the Spirit of St. Francis ...THANK YOU!

To everyone who helped with set-up, serving and clean-up and those who shared their delicious sal-ads and desserts for the Remi Sabbe funeral lunch-eon.

Rosary Makers: Please feel free to join us on the first Thursday of the month from 10:00 - Noon in the parish center south classroom for rosary making and fellow-ship! There are many requests for rosaries around the world and right here in the US. Currently, the St. Francis Rosary Makers are focused on sending rosaries to missions in the United States. Each rosary takes about 15 minutes to com-plete. We welcome newcomers and are happy to teach you how to complete a rosary. For those who are not able to leave their homes, a rosary maker can come to your home and teach you rosary making. After a few lessons, you will be well on your way to making rosaries at home. What a wonderful way to feel connected to your parish while learning a new craft and meeting new people. Thank you to Karen Bradshaw for starting this wonderful ministry at our parish. Feel free to call Jennifer Mirek in the parish office with questions or to connect further with Karen.

Care Ministry

Saint Thomas Aquinas was born in 1226 and died in 1274. For his accomplish-ments in those 48 years – he filled vol-umes with his writings and was consid-ered a great preacher – St. Thomas is one of the greatest and most influential theologians of all time.

He studied at Cologne and was nicknamed the "dumb ox" because of his silent ways and huge size. But he was a brilliant student. At the age of twenty-two, he was ap-pointed to teach in Cologne, where he published his first works. He later became a priest and, at the age of 31, received his doctorate. St. Thomas is the Patron Saint of all universities and of students. His feast day is January 28th. U.S. students need the prayers of St. Thomas Aquinas: As of 2012, 1 out of 7 U.S. adults can’t read. One out of 5 U.S. adults read below a 5th grade level. One out of 5 high school graduates cannot read. 63% of prison in-mates cannot read. U.S. Illiteracy Statistics Data You can lose your job; You can lose your car; You can lose your home; But you can’t lose your education. The surest way out of poverty is education. Being lit-erate means you’re probably employed. Besides earning an income, being employed means you’re more likely to build a savings for your future. You will need savings because having an education means that you will live longer. Having an education means living a healthier life. Having an education makes learning the issues and voting; living as a faithful citizen. “Education is the most vital of all resources.” A socie-ty’s economic development depends, first, on the ideas and intellect of men and women. The well-being of our communities depends upon this contribution from every man and woman.

Education is more than work study; college is not a career school. Education is an opportunity to have a difference made in our lives. Education is not science or humanities but science and humanities and shop class. Education is a blank touch screen upon which we write new experiences, pursue a passionate subject that may have nothing to do with our careers and every-thing to do with living. Education has everything to do with flourishing despite losing your job, your car, and your home. Children need parents and teachers who believe in them despite being labelled a "dumb ox.” Children need the support from society to benefit from a vibrant school system and affordable higher education. U.S. students need the prayers of St. Thomas Aquinas. Courtesy of the Office of Life, Justice, and Peace

“Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights-for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture-is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all oth-er personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination.” ~St. John Paul II
