SEPTEMBER 30th, 2018 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time One of the problems most governments seek to prevent in the economic sphere are so-called “mega mergers.” This threat comes when two major companies want to combine to form a new, more powerful and profitable entity. What is the threat? Monopolies. An example would be if one entertainment empire were to merge with another. Here we would have two entities whose combined presence in the marketplace becomes so dominant that not only does one philosophy emerge, but also consumers are denied options. The word “monopoly” comes from the Greek word “monopolion”, meaning one (mono) sell (poleo). It means the exclusive possession or control of trade or a commodi-ty. The idea is the limitation of choice and the end of com-petition, with little or no care about consumer interests or experience with the goods in question. The same applies when we consider spiritual entities, like the gift of healing. No one has a “lock”, so to speak, on that gift. Jesus told us that “The Spirit blows where He will.” Sometimes the results of that are surprising to say the least. In our gospel passage for Mass this weekend we find the Apostles a bit disconcerted that someone “who does not follow us” was seen driving out demons. They thought they had a monopoly on such actions. Jesus is quick to educate John, presumably His favorite among the Twelve, not to worry or try to prevent these “outsiders” from per-forming such mighty deeds. The key words Jesus uses are that were doing this “in my (Jesus’) name.” He added that someone can’t be both for and against Him at the same time. Finally, we get the beautiful interpretation of what befalls a person giving a mere cup of water to a fellow Christian. St. Mark moves on to Jesus’ memorable metaphor of cutting off whatever body part causes one to sin and blocks entrance into the kingdom of God. In the Greco-Roman era in which Our Lord lived, the body was also a metaphor of the community. Jesus uses that hyperbole that precludes any literal self-mutilation. So, we have monopoly madness and spoiling scandal in the same passage. For us, spiritual monopoly could come down to holding one’s opinion as the only correct one in a hypothetical discussion. Scandal could arise by a sarcastic cocktail party description of parish personnel, or even Church teaching, especially when people of other religions are also sipping martinis with you. Same evils, present contexts. Meanwhile, we’re so good at making excuses. I thought it might be some comic relief from these heavy thoughts to close with some five allegedly real excuses that someone collected, and which were offered to police officers in rela-tion to automobile accidents. Pick your favorite. “An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my car and vanished.” “I had been driving my car for forty years when I fell asleep at the wheel.” “I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law, and headed over the embankment.” “The pedestrian had no idea which direction to go, so I ran over him.” “Suddenly a tree was there, where no tree had been before.” “ Reflection by, Rev. Leonard N. Peterson”
