Dear Friend of the Knights,

St. Francis de Sales taught that we must live in the present moment. Yesterday is gone; tomorrow is not yet; we have only today. On the other hand, St. Paul wrote that he looks forward, keeping his eye always on the finish line, as he strives to gain his prize. Both of these holy men write the truth. As Christians, we are always look-ing to the future, finally to the future of eternal life in heaven. On the other hand, what we do in the present determines the road we walk into the future.

At St. Francis de Sales High School we are taking action in the present to determine a future full of hope. We want our school to be the first school of choice for those interested in strong academics. Rather than dilute our resources by stretching our mission to become a 6th through 12th grade school, we have strengthened what we already do best, educating high school students. We have strengthened our Advanced Place-ment Program and forged a dual enrollment relationship with the University of Toledo so that our students will graduate, not just prepared for college, but actually with college credit. Many Knight Alumni begin college as sophomores every year and most begin college with at least some semester credits.

We have constructed a student achievement center, a high-tech, university level academic resource facility to benefit students looking for a relaxed environment for study, tutoring assistance when help is needed, and serious academic research when required.

We have systematically evaluated all of our athletic and activity programs and are taking steps to strengthen them while simultaneously maintaining our high academic standards.

We have undertaken and successfully completed Phase I of the Courage/Leadership/Legacy Campaign so as to ensure our financial stability and invest in building our endowment. We are now beginning Phase II of that campaign so as to further fund our endowment and future initiatives.

It is true: we must live in the present but our eyes are on the future and what we do today determines the road we walk into the future.

Thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff, our students and their families, our alumni, and our benefactors, we truly do have a future full of hope. Thank you for helping us ensure that future.

Planned GivingJohn O’Shea ’60 “When my late-wife and I prepared to draft our wills, we decided that our priorities were: 1) our children; 2) the education of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; 3) appreciation to the schools and communities that had touched our lives. Graduating from St. Francis, I have been fortunate to have been blessed with life-long friends, and an excellent foundation for my college education. Though I never lived in Toledo again after college, it only seemed right to show my gratitude to the school in my will. I would encourage others to consider the same.”

In his personal life there are very few that match his integrity, charity or service to the community. Endowed FundsEndowment gifts are essential to ensuring the long-term financial health of the School. Gifts to the Endowment Fund are invested by the School and the income from the gift is directed toward a pur-pose selected by the donor. Only the income from the principal is expended in accordance with the School’s spending rule, so that the gift continues in perpetuity, helping to safeguard SFS’s tradition of excellence against changing economic climates.

In accordance with both the donor’s wishes and the School’s needs, gifts to the Endowment Fund sup-port a variety of institutional needs. Gifts of $5,000 or more can be made to the Endowment Fund for the benefit of the School in respect of any one of a number of areas. Additionally, for gifts of $25,000 or more, a named fund within the Endowment Fund may be established.

St. Francis de Sales High School is supported by alumni, parents, friends, and busi-ness and community leaders through annual giving, capital giving, and planned giving. Annual gifts, event income, and interest generated from the endowment fund, enable St. Francis to meet its most pressing needs by funding a portion of the School’s annual operating budget.

Donor support is critical to the School’s ability to maintain the excellence of a Knight education for this and future generations of young men. St. Francis de Sales High School is most grateful for the kind generosity of its donors and bene-factors, past, present and future.

Annual GivingAnnual, unrestricted gifts support the School’s core needs including tuition as-sistance, teacher salaries, facility maintenance, and athletic programs. Every annual gift counts - a $500 unrestricted annual gift provides a financial benefit to the school that is equivalent to the annual interest income associated with a $10,000 capital gift to the endowment fund.

Capital GivingCapital gifts to St. Francis de Sales High School are defined as gifts of $5,000 or more. Often, capital gifts are made on a multi-year pledge basis, typically, five years. Capital gifts to the school ensure a strong, permanent endowment, help to build and restore campus facilities and sustain a comprehensive range of aca-demic and extracurricular programs. Donors who choose to make capital gifts can direct their support toward a specific purpose that matches their personal interests with the needs and priorities of SFS.

Planned GivingBequests, charitable gift annuities, and charitable trusts are all examples of planned gifts. Most planned gifts benefit St. Francis de Sales High School at some point in the future and play a significant role in preserving SFS’s excellence for future generations of students.

From the PrincipalDear St. Francis Alumni and Friends,

By now you probably have seen some version of the MasterCard commercials assigning prices to products or services which ends with a resulting cumulative value. This year the cost of tuition and fees at St. Francis breaks the $10,000 threshold for the first time. Although our tuition and fees are consistent with other Catholic high schools in the Toledo area, we are conscious of the significant cost and resulting sacrifices many families are required to make to send a young man to school here.

Some people, Catholics included, question the decision to send their son to a Catholic high school when there are some good public school systems in their locale. Is the cost and financial sacrifice worth it? The answer is an unequivocal Yes. Why? What does St. Francis offer that makes a Salesian education worth the money? Excellence!

We are committed to providing excellence and the best possible education to our students. Excellence begins with the faculty and staff at St. Francis. We are obligated to have the best teachers, coaches and staff in service to our students and their families. To insure we have the best, we evaluate personnel on an ongoing basis to make certain we are providing excellent educational services. If changes are warranted, it is our responsibility to make the necessary personnel adjustments. We are committed to only the finest individuals working with our Knights.

The newly constructed Achievement Center along with our chapel, computer labs, art rooms, and technology in the classrooms illustrate our commitment to excellence in our facilities. As we prepare to install field turf in our stadium in the near future, we continuously are improving our campus. In order to provide excellence, we will continue to explore opportunities to upgrade our facilities so that our students have access to the best.

Academic programming and services are two other areas of excellence that make a St. Francis education worth the cost. This year we will develop our student leadership program through the new College Vision course. The course incorporates standardized test preparation, leadership development, guest speakers, college essay writing, and visits to highly selective colleges. We have added an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher to provide services to our international students. Our dual enrollment program with the University of Toledo and our twenty Advanced Placement (AP) course offerings provide our Knights the most opportunities for high school students in northwest Ohio for earning college credit while still in high school.

When you consider the intangibles of a Knight education, the real value of what we offer increases exponentially. St. Francis provides students the opportunity to learn in a safe environment where young men are encouraged to be who they are and be that well, a faith based Catholic education where character and morality are a part of everything we teach and social opportunities to develop boys into Christian gentlemen. The brotherhood that is formed among our students and their integration into the St. Francis family is something that every graduate leaves us with and that can never be taken away.

When you look at the big picture of what we have to offer, the quality people that graduate from our school and their successes locally, nationally and on the world stage, a St. Francis education is an investment in the future. Costs for the 2012-2013 school year: Registration Fee $250, Comprehensive Fee $262, Tuition $9,800. What is the real value of a St. Francis de Sales High School education? Priceless!
