Each player had been asked what person he most admired. One of the players listed two Jesus Christ and Dennis Rodman. Upon noticing this, my friend turned to me and said, “Think about what would happen if those two ever met.” The funny part is that they have met. Simply think about the ways Jesus is present to us today. He is present in all those who believe in him through their baptism, and really everyone to some degree. He is distinctively present in the person of the priest through his ordination. He is present wherever two or three are gathered in His name. Of course, He is most perfectly present in the most Holy Eucharist were the substance of bread and wine is changed into the very body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. Now perhaps we can gain some insight into some of the most perplexing words that Jesus Christ ever speaks. For at the Last Supper, just hours before His crucifixion, Jesus tells His disciples, “It is better for you that I should go.” In fact, if yo u listen closely, you can almost hear the gigantic gasp emanating from the disciples. How in the world can it better if Jesus leaves? The answer is straightforward. When Jesus leaves, the Holy Spirit comes. There are at least two reasons why this gift of God the Holy Spirit on Pentecost is better for us than even the gift of God the Son at Christmas. The first comes from the gospel from St. John. In this gospel, Jesus says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Forgiveness of sins is the first and greatest benefit of the Holy Spirit. It perpetuates the work of Jesus by prov iding the power to forgive sins to Jesus’ apostles. The second reason it is better for us that Jesus leaves is that the Holy Spirit is also the power that makes our belief in Jesuspresence more meritorious. This can be seen by simply looking more closely at the sacrament of the most Holy Eucharist. At each Mass, the priest, invoking the power of the Holy Spirit, actually replaces the presence of bread and wine with the presence of Jesus Christ. Of course, to some this presents a problem because this change is not perceptible to our physical eyes. It is only perceptible through the eyes of faith. In reality, this “problem” is actually a blessing. Our ability to perceive in faith what is hidden from our sight is what makes our belief more meritorious than the belief of the once doubting St. Thomas. We truly become the ones “wh o have not seen and still believe.” This is why I think that if Dennis Rodman ever met Jesus Christ as the apostles did after His resurrection, no conversion would be guaranteed. Dennis Rodman, just like you or me, has already met Jesus Christ countless times, and probably does so everyday. Every day the Holy Spirit confronts us with the presence of Jesus Christ, and more often than not, the Holy Spirit does so in a way that, just like He does in the Eucharist, disguises Jesus’ presence to our eyes. In fact, most of the time the disguise used by the Holy Spirit is those who we deem as the least brothers and sisters. Isn’t this why Jesus says to His disciples in the gospel of St . Matthew that “whatsoever you do to the least of my people, you do for me?” His presence is in everyone, even if that presence is disguised. How do we better recognize the presence of Jesus Christ when He comes disguised as our least brother or sister? Perhaps the answer is obvious. We must better recognize Him when He is disguised as bread and as wine. This is why, not only Eucharistic Adoration, but our participation at the Mass is so important. The more we participate at Mass by our singing, responding and concentration, the more we exercise our eyes of faith in the difficult task of recognizing Jesus when He is hidden from our senses. The better we do this with Jesus when He is disguised as bread and wine, the better we will be able to see Him when He is disguised as another human being. If you genuinely want to grow in relationship with your neighbor, there is a simple solution. Grow in your appreciation of our Lord in the Eucharist. Just like the body and the soul, or the husband and the wife, our worship of the Lord in the Eucharist and our love toward our neighbor, are two things that only work when they are combined. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2nd GRADERS OF ST. FRANCIS PARISH, WHO ARE MAKING THEIR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION TODAY.

Prayer for Your Child on First Communion Day Good and loving God, source of all that is good, at the Last Supper Your Son, Jesus, gave the sacrament of His body and blood to His disciples and to the whole Church. May the Eucharist our child has

received for the first time today, keep Him close to Jesus, and unite us in love for all of God's children. May the presence of Christ fill the hearts of all who receive Him on this First Communion day. May the sacrifice of

Christ teach our child how to love others with all his heart and may the sacrament he has received help him live as a worthy child of God. Amen.

PENTECOST SUNDAY, MAY 31, 2020 - PRAYER FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, fan into the flame the gifts I received in my Baptism and Confirmation.

I want to receive the fire of Your love as Your disciples did at Pentecost. Come with wonder and awe, with wisdom, understanding and counsel, with courage and faith in You. Holy Spirit, may my actions witness to

Your presence in my life. Help me to see the ways my strengths can serve others in their weakness. In all my interactions, I want to radiate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,

gentleness and self-control. Breathe new life into the world with me.
