From Fr. Mark Scott…

As we celebrate Holy Communion, just before the elements are distributed, we hear the words, “The Gifts of God for the People of God.”

Normally, we might think that the elements of bread and wine are the gifts. The people of God receive these gifts as they receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

However, as we share in the Sacrament each Sunday, we come to realize something more important and more meaningful for our lives. As we share the power of Jesus Christ in the sacrament, we ourselves also share in the power of God’s good gifts in our lives.

In other words, through the Sacrament of Holy Communion, we ourselves—the living disciples of our Lord—become a reflection of the gifts our Lord provides for us. When you understand stewardship this way, you gain a tremendous sense of awe at the work our Lord is doing among us.

As we become instruments of God’s gifts to the world, we also become the instruments of God’s giving. If God is reshaping the world through the power of the Gospel, then some of that reshaping occurs through the actions we take in our lives. That is really the spiritual significance of our stewardship efforts here at St. Francis.

God is using each one of us for a purpose—to share the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. If we are giving, loving and benevolent human beings, that Gospel will reach the world in all kinds of ways. On the other hand, if we fail to respond to the call of our Lord, the mes-sage will be more difficult for others to hear.

Stewardship is really the work we pursue as God’s people TOGETHER. This year, as you consider your giving, ask first how God has worked in your life. And remember that our call in the spiritual quest of giving is to share the gifts of God for the people of God EVERYWHERE.

Peace in Christ,

Fr. Mark

HEALTHY CHURCH INITIATIVE UPDATE

One specific priority identified was to be more inviting and inclusive as a congregation. A step toward achieving this goal is to merge the func-tions of ushers and greeters. This is the area in which welcoming begins. Ronnie Connelly is heading this team. At a gathering in August he explained how and why these two groups can be-come one, become stronger, and give visitors and newcomers a more welcoming first impression of St. Francis of Assisi. This focuses on our mission statement, To Love, Grow, and Serve. It was decided that greeters will work with ushers for a few months in order to feel more comfortable with their new tasks. Additional training will also take place in the near future. Stewardship continues to move forward with its year-around program. Coming soon – an intergenerational Outreach pro-ject that will truly include all ages, and, perhaps, a bit of competition!
