From Fr. Paul…

Dear Friends, Have you heard the news? The Son of God

was born in Bethlehem! The Creator of the world has come down from heaven to save us

from sin and death. The Birth that happened 2,000 years ago continues today, because the

Lord is still with us - by our Baptism, in the Eucharist, in our daily prayer, and in our community of service. May you and your

family rejoice in this Christmas Season, and may the Holy Family watch over us.

Thank you to all the volunteers who have

made our Christmas celebrations so beautiful - the choirs; the decorators; the Children's Pageants' leaders; the altar servers, lectors, and

Eucharistic ministers; the ushers and greeters; the donors of Christmas flowers; the St

Vincent de Paul Society and Friends of Francis; and all those who contributed in any

way. May we continue to build each other up by our service, and find joy in doing so.

May the Christ Child and the Holy Family bless us in the new year 2020!

Father Paul

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Are you an adult who has not yet been baptized and would like to explore the possibility of being baptized? Are you an adult who was baptized in a non-Catholic Christian community and would be interested in entering into full communion with the Catholic Church? Are you an adult who was baptized in the Catholic Church as a child, never received further faith formation, and would like to pursue reception of the sacraments beyond baptism? Are you an adult who did not complete your Religious Education and would like to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation? If any of these descriptions applies to you, please consider your possible participation in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults – RCIA. Please feel free to pass this notice on to a family member or friend. The RCIA is the process of spiritual and catechetical formation through which adults decide to be baptized or enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. If you are interested, have any questions or would like to participate, please contact the parish office or Fr. Peter Shen at [email protected]

GRAND ANNUAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Thank you to all who have generously contributed toward our Grand Annual Campaign!

As Father Paul mentioned in his appeal letter, this collection is critical to maintaining the financial stability of our parishes. Our Weekly Offertory alone doesn’t cover all our operating expenses, so our Grand Annual collection is the bridge that allows us to do so. Especially at this time of year, this collection helps us meet the increased utilities and maintenance costs associated with the cold months. Your help in reaching our goal is needed and most appreciated!

The campaign will be in effect until January 2020. We also offer an on-line donation option, for your convenience. It can be accessed through our website at www.medfordcollaborative.com/online-giving. If you have yet to contribute, we ask for your prayerful consideration and generosity.

Our next meeting of

the Collaborative

Book Club:

Tuesday, January 28,

2020 at 7:00 pm

at the St. Francis of

Assisi Dining Hall

Our next book to read and share in discussion is:

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD By Harold Kushner

We have a limited number of copies of the book available for purchase at the Parish Office at a

discounted rate of $11.00 each.

If you are interested in joining the Collaborative Book Club, please contact the

Parish Office to sign up.

We look forward to seeing you!

FROM THE INSIDE FLAP: “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” So begins the psalm that, for millennia, has been a source of comfort in grief and of courage in fear. Now Harold Kushner discovers what it has to teach us about living our day-to-day lives. Each chapter discusses one line of the psalm in the context of both the time when it was written and the present day, and illuminates the life lessons contained within it. For example, Kushner shows us that the phrase “My cup runneth over” is a declaration of our gratitude for what life has given us and a rejection of the envy we may feel for what others have. And he draws on the ideas and thoughts of various spiritual figures from G. K. Chesterton to Martin Buber to Paul Tillich to further expand our understanding of this great psalm and help us benefit from its everyday spiritual wisdom.

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities. Our Church leaders and pastors work tirelessly to serve our Church both within and well beyond the walls of our parishes, as is evidenced by the examples above and below.

Pine Street Inn: Fr. Frank Kelley, Fr. Bill Joy and Boston urban priests created what we know today as the Pine Street Inn. This local organization provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.

Rostro de Cristo: Fr. Jim Ronan founded this agency, which provides life-changing service opportunities for young adults to serve those on the margins in Ecuador. While continuing to shepherd Rostro, Fr. Jim Ronan also serves as pastor of St. Mary-St.Catherine of Sienna in Charlestown, where hundreds of families look to the parish food pantry for groceries.

Civic and Community Support: In Dorchester, Fr. Linh Nguyen, the pastor of St. Ambrose Parish, leads a strong and vibrant faith community while also providing civic support for his parishioners, many of whom came here from Vietnam with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

Fire Chaplaincy: Fr. John Unni of St. Cecilia’s in Boston and Fr. Dan Mahoney, pastor of St. Francis de Sales in Charlestown, serve our community as chaplains for the Boston Fire Department.

It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities for all of us.

Please support the special Christmas collection for our priests at Christmas Masses in your parish or at clergytrust.org
