Sunday 8:00 AM 9:15 AM 10:30AM 12:30 PM Monday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Tuesday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Wednesday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Thursday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM Friday 8:00 AM 7:00 PM 7:30 PM Saturday 8:00 AM 5:30 PM 7:00 PM Sunday 8:00 AM 9:15 AM 10:30 AM 12:30 PM 1

Dear Parishioners: Numbers are very symbolic in the Bible. For example, take the number 12. The twelve apostles of Jesus’ New Cove-nant replaced the 12 patriarchs of the Old Covenant. On the number 1, which is sym-bolic for totality, completeness, including all in the old, in the new replaced. The 7 days of creation from which we derive our week to the New Creation by the 7 Gifts of the Spirit and the 7 Sacraments which sanctify all of human life in its different stages from our Baptism at infancy to the Anointing of the Sick at life’s most fragile moments. I think by now you may know where my reflection this first Sunday of Lent is leading. In our first reading from the Book of Genesis God prepares the fami-ly of Noah for the great flood when it rained for 40 days and nights in order to wash the world clean of evil and set the stage for his covenant represented by the bow in the sky. It was to prefigure our per-sonal covenant with the Lord at Baptism when we promised to reject evil in all its forms and follow Christ. But follow him where? Today we hear that he went into the desert for 40 days to fast and pray. There he was tempted to do his own will over the Father’s. Does that sound famil-iar? It was only a couple days ago that someone told me of the penance they were going to do for Lent. I asked them how it was going and they said, “It didn’t even last 40 minutes.” Although I had to laugh at the humanity of their response I couldn’t help but wonder how much we all really need these 40 days to learn from Jesus. May God grant us the grace to bring the good work he has begun in us to completion so that we may live to the fullest. Love and Prayers, Bro. John

Juan

2018 Lenten Regulations

1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffer-ing and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only (1) full meal is permitted, and (2) smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18-59 are obliged to fast. 2. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially” , or as a whole , is a serious obligation. 3. The Friday’s of the year, outside of Lent, are designed as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice voluntarily self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty)

extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2018 to the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 27, 2018

HOW SHOULD WE DRESS FOR MASS? People generally have no real problem wearing proper clothing when entering places that de-mand such attire. Would you ever consider at-tending a formal dinner or a wedding dressed in a tee shirt and shorts, or a tank top and swim-ming trunks? Each Sunday the Lord invites us to His House. Are you dressed properly for this important Sacred Sacrificial Meal?
