Dear Parishioners: “Where the human spirit fails the Holy Spirit fills.” These words kept repeat-ing in my mind as I contemplated the mean-ing of the Solemnity of Pentecost which we celebrate today. I am reminded of the case of a tank-er which was beached on a shore. All day efforts had been made to return the huge vessel to the water, but with no success. Fi-nally, the captain told all crews and compa-nies to stop; he went to his cabin and wait-ed. When the tide came in that night the wa-ters lifted the thousand-ton tanker off the beach and carried it, light as a feather, back into the deep. The image of the tanker brings to mind the Church which since ancient times has been compared to a great oceangoing vessel. She is both human and divine. In her humanity, she is subject to the limits of storm and sea but in her divinity, she con-tinues to overcome the elements of nature. In today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Luke says a small but significant sentence about the Pentecost story. “All were filled with the Holy Spirit.” Those seven words summarize that sensational event. This was the day the apostles both individually and collectively became in-stantly rich with internal spiritual gifts di-rectly from God. The sevenfold gifts were bestowed on this frightened group of believers, calling them to sudden maturity. Their new-found Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Forti-tude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord gave the recipients both incentive and ability to unlock the doors and face the world. We pray for a new Pentecost so that we might do the same.

Love and Prayers, Bro. John

Mucho amor y bendiciones, Hno. Juan

ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfill-ment of all God’s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Chris-tian vocation. Paul’s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John’s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

GUIDE US TODAY Holy Spirit, you who pointed out the way for your disciples to announce the gospel, we pray to you: As in the time of the apostles, guide today’s messengers of the Good News.
