Seminarian Collection Kickoff: A spiritual family needs spiritual fathers. That is why the 15th Annu-al Seminarian Collection: Hope for the Future, Help them Today is so important. By now you most likely received a letter from Bishop Ricken requesting your help in supporting our local semi-narians. Please return your generous contribution to this collection, using the pledge card and return

envelope you received in the mail. A gift of $15, $150, $515 or more will help our seminarians move forward in their work of becoming mis-sionaries disciples. Every gift makes a difference. Our seminarians are our Hope for the Future, Let us Help them Today! As a Diocese, we anticipate costs of $1,000,000 this year for tuition, room and board, health insurance, support of the Office of Vocations and the work of Fr. Mark Mleziva and Fr. Adam Bradley. Friends and followers of Jesus support one another! To make your gift today, visit www.catholicfoundationgb.org/give. This weekend, Green Bay Diocese Seminarian Nathan Budde will be speaking at our Masses so we can hear about his calling and how we can help. Missionary Cooperation Plan: Next weekend, August 8 & 9, we’ll being hearing a missionary message from seminarian Dennis Beltre. Originally from the Dominican Republic, he is currently studying at St. Francis of DeSales Seminary, Milwaukee. The Missionary Coopera-tion Appeal allows mission groups to make a personal appeal for pray-ers and financial support from Catholics in our diocese. It also allows parishioners to be educated about what is happening in the mission field today. Contribution envelopes are in today’s bulletin.

Pastor’s Perspective …

“GOD'S LOVE AND DIVINE PROVIDENCE” The central message for today's readings is the divine providence of a loving and merciful God who generously shares his riches with us, giving us his Son Jesus as our spiritual food, preparing us for the heavenly banquet, and challenging us to share

our blessings with others. After announcing the return of God's chosen people to their homeland from Babylonian captivity, the prophet Isaiah, in to-day's first reading, concludes his prophecies with God's invita-tion to the eschatological banquet. God's gracious invitation in the first reading is echoed by the Psalmist who asks the people to respond by praising and blessing God. In the second reading, Paul argues that since God loves us, “nothing can come between us and the love of God made visible in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus, in our Gospel reading, demonstrates God's love and divine providence by miraculously feeding a multitude of people in a remote, desolate village called Bethsaida Julius, where the River Jordan flows into the north end of the sea of Galilee. Jesus acts out of his great compassion for the crowds. First he challenges his disciples to give what they have - five loaves and two fish. Then he performs the four-fold action that prefigures the Eucharist: He takes, blesses, breaks and gives the bread and fish to the crowd, making of them a community of the Lord's banquet. Just as God supplies the needs of all living be-ings, so Jesus also heals the sick and feeds the hungry. My brothers and sister in Christ, the Liturgy of the Word for today's Mass is reminding us that God really cares about his peo-ple and that there is enough and more than enough for every-body. We all share responsibility for the fact that some people are still undernourished. It is necessary at this time to arouse a sense of responsibility in individuals, especially among those more blessed with material goods. It is too easy to blame God, too easy to blame the governments, too easy to see poverty, hunger and lack of jobs as other people's problems. They are also our problems. That is the meaning of the Eucharist we celebrate here today. In other words, as Christians we have to commit ourselves to share and to work with God in communicating his love and compassion to all. God is a caring father, but he wants our cooperation. That is what the early Christians did, generously sharing what they had with the needy. They were convinced that everything they needed to experience a fulfilling life was already there, in the gifts and talents of the people around them. People of our time have to be encouraged to share their gifts and talents, even when they think they have nothing to offer. Whatever we offer through Jesus will have a life giving effect in those who receive it. Our Gospel passage today shows us two attitudes: that of Philip and that of Andrew. Philip said, in effect: “The situation is hope-less; nothing can be done.” But Andrew's attitude was: “I will see what I can do, and I will trust Jesus to do the rest.” Like An-drew and the little boy, let us give what we have to God. For it is when we give what we have to God and ask him to bless it that miracles happen.

Remain Blessed, Father Tony

Thoughts for Today’s Readings …

To the Point: In today’s gospel, though the disciples are in the company of the Bread of Life himself, they worry about the effects of hunger. Their protest that “five loaves and two fish are all we have” gives us an insight into their desire to be rid of the crowds. They are operating from a place of scarcity. This amount of food would hardly be enough to feed their small band of thirteen. If they share it, they will have nothing. But Jesus is not dissuaded; he blesses and distributes the meager

feast and once everyone has eaten their fill, the leftovers total “twelve wicker baskets full.” Another important number in the Bible, “twelve” can signal fullness and calls to mind the twelve tribes of Israel. In the Lord we do not need to fear scarcity—there is enough to satisfy the hunger of all.

Connecting the Gospel to Experience: Today’s readings call us to let go of all fear. We do not need to worry that there is not enough to go around. We do not need to cower before any natural or supernatural force. We are protected and nourished by the infinite love of God. Under his care, fear melts away, leaving behind only love and the desire to serve him and our neighbor.

1. Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord calls to all who hunger and thirst to come to him and be satisfied. How does your parish commu-nity reach out to those who hunger and thirst, either physically or spiritually?

2. In the letter to the Romans, St. Paul boldly proclaims that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Is there an individual in your

life who is in need of this message? How might you express it to this person? 3. Many times in the gospels we hear of Jesus going off to a “deserted place by himself” in order to pray. Where do you find solace and

quiet to pray? 4. Jesus’ miracles show us what life is like in the kingdom of God. From today’s miracle of feeding the five thousand from five loaves and

two fish, what message do you receive about the kingdom? Source: Living Liturgy 2020, Liturgical Press
