Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Abbey Hey. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Abbey Hey to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. The fates have conspired against us and with New Mills winning in their replayed FA Vase 1st Round tie and a waterlogged pitch on Tuesday at Winsford United we have not taken the field since we played here at Knowsley Road against Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday 17th November. We bounced back to winning ways with a fantastic come from behind 6-3 victory. After going 1-0 behind in the Runcorn game and playing some fantastic football to try and get back into the game the visitors scored against the run of play and with recent results I was wondering how many we were going to lose by. Marc Stephens pulled a goal back before the interval helped to brighten my mood and a quick fire start to the second saw Town net twice through Mike Scully & Phil Mitchell to take a 3-2 lead and Runcorn level quickly afterwards. Town then stepped up a gear and retook the lead through Mike Fargher before Mike Scully missed a penalty. The points were secured when Ben Kay netted and Scully added his second of the match and Town completed the “double” over Runcorn Linnets. This afternoon sees the visit of much improved basement side Abbey Hey to Knowsley Road. The visitors will be looking to avenge the opening day 5-1 reverse at the hands of Town as they look to get off the foot of the table and away from danger of the dreaded drop. Gary and the squad will know that they need to put in a good performance this afternoon to ensure that three points are gained before going into two top of the table clashes next week when Ramsbottom United & Congleton Town are due to visit us here at Knowsley Road. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Abbey Hey FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter! It’s been a week or so since we’ve been in action on that occasion a 6-3 thrilling victory of Runcorn Linnets here at Knowsley Road ensured the lads got back to winning ways. Although we played well during the first half of the Runcorn encounter we found ourselves two goals down at it was a strike from Marc Stevens on the stroke of half time that gave Town just rewards for their efforts and a life line in the game. The second half was completely different as Town blew away their opposition with goals from Mike Scully (2), Man of the Match Phil Mitchell, Mike Fargher and Ben Kay. Scully could even afford a penalty miss!! Since then the weather meant our planned trip to Winsford United last Tuesday was postponed while last Saturday our league fixture at home to New Mills saw our visitors in FA Vase action!

Steve Pennington’s Reserves (pictured left) were in action at Bobbies Lane last weekend when they entertained Redgate Rovers in the John Gregson Memorial Trophy, eventually running out 5-2 winners in what was a very e n t e r t a i n i n g encounter. The ‘Ressies’ currently lead their group by

six points and will be hoping to make it to the semi-finals of the competition. Abbey Hey arrive at Knowsley Road on the back of a confidence boosting 4-1 away victory at Flixton on Wednesday night - only their second win of the campaign and while they are firmly rooted to the bottom of the league table we all know form is no real guide in the Vodkat League. I am sure Gary will have told the lads not to take anything for granted and to work hard for the spoils this afternoon. We return to Knowsley Road next week - on Tuesday evening we entertain Ramsbottom United followed by Congleton Town next Saturday for what will be another two very tough fixtures. In Town Today . . . Abbey Hey Football Club were founded in 1902 in the Abbey Hey district of Manchester, some three miles from the city centre. They began life in local church Sunday Leagues and progressed steadily through the now defunct Manchester Amateur League and onto higher standards. They became known as one of the leading amateur clubs in the area, winning the Manchester County F.A. Amateur Cup on three occassions in the 1960’s as well as League Championships

and other outside cup successes. The present stadium was aquired in 1984 and since then the building of a new clubhouse and ground improvements allied with success on the pitch has made Abbey Hey even more well known in the world of football. The club gained success in the Manchester League during the 1980’s and early 1990’s, winning the Championship on no less than five occasions during that period, the first time being in 1981/82. That same season Abbey Hey defeated Grasmere Rovers in the Manchester Challenge Cup Final. Grasmere were to later change their name to their current title Cheadle Town.

The 1990’s was a hugely successful time for Abbey Hey as, from 1991/92 for six successive seasons, they either won the League Championship or the Open Cup (league cup). In their final season in the Manchester League, the club finished as runners up to Springhead who had led the table from the opening day of the season, although the final outcome wasn’t decided until the final day. Having had another successful season, the club applied to join the North West Counties League and after making various ground improvements, they were invited to join in the summer of 1998. Abbey Hey’s first season in the North West Counties League coudn’t have been more exciting. Although Fleetwood had taken the Division Two title, the runners up place was still wide open. On the last Saturday of the season any one of three clubs could have taken second place, but it was Abbey Heys 3-2 win at Darwen that clinched promotion to Divsion One in their first season in the League. A tremendous amount of hard work was put in by the committee and by the players to enable the club to erect brand new floodlights at the end of the season so the club could take its place in Division One. In their first season in the top flight, Abbey Hey had a tremendous start, topping the table at one point early in the season, but a drop in form saw them finish mid-

Still, a highly creditable first season in Division One and they had more than proved themselves worthy of their rapid rise from the Manchester League to the NWCL Division One. 2000/01 season again saw Abbey Hey finish in a comfortable mid-table position, proving that the previous season had been no fluke, but the following season the club had a poor start, suffering some heavy defeats. The second half of the season saw an improvement which lifted the club away from any relegation threat but at the end of the season, manager Jim Clarke decided to resign,

ending an eighteen year stint in management in which he had overseen some of Abbey Hey’s finest moments. Jims replacement for 2002/03 was Tony Hancock, previously Woodley Sports Reserve Team manager, who took Paul Kirkham as his assistant. It was their first attempt at management at this level of football and Abbey Heys final position of 13th showed that they rose to the challenge. During the season Calum Dempsey won the NWCL Player of the Month award for September and goalkeeper Liam Higginbottom won the October “Safe Hands” award. However, at the end of their

first season in charge, Tony Hancock and Paul Kirkham left the club to return to Woodley Sports as managers of the First Team. Jim Vince took over for 2003/04 but after a good start to the season things went wrong and, despite only losing five out of their last ten games, the club ended the season second from bottom, avoiding relegation because of the changes in the structure of non-league football throughout the UK. At the end of the season Jim Vince made the decision to resign and Chris Bailey took over knowing that a major rebuilding job was required for the team. Chris did fantastic job as the side turned from the previous seasons relegation candidates to a comfortable mid-table team. The side ended up by just failing to equal their best season finishing 14th in Division One. The club improved again during the 2005/6 season and finished in a club record 11th place by winning fourteen matches two fewer than the previous season. 2006/7 saw the Gorton side struggle at the wrong end of the table finishing 17th. 2007/8 saw a 17th place finish similar to the previous term but this time in a 20 team league. Last term saw a 21st place finish but the club survived as only one team was relegated to the First Division as a result of the UniBond not relegating a team.

Vodkat League News Padiham Tribute Officials at Padiham FC have been paying tribute to one of their former players who passed away recently. Jess Shaw, a Padiham player in the 1950s died a couple of weeks ago, and after his funeral was held on Tuesday 17th November, his family contacted the club

to ask if a tribute could be paid at the club's next home game. Padiham Secretary Alan Smith explained: "Jess

continued to follow the club's fortunes once he finished playing, and he and his family always remained in touch with the club. His sons have regularly attended games in recent years. "After the funeral the family contacted the club and asked if the family wreath from the ceremony could be displayed at the ground, in memory of Jess's long association with the club. We were naturally happy to oblige". The wreath was displayed prominently on the grass bank behind the

terracing on the far side of the Arbories ground, during the FA Vase game against Norton & Stockton Ancients last Saturday. New Book From Colls Legend Atherton Collieries legend Terry (Ted) Halliwell has released a book chronicling his Colls career, along with his record-breaking exploits for Atherton Cricket Club. Ted played for Colls in the halcyon days of the 50s and 60s, when winning silverware was a regular occurance at Alder House.

Around The Grounds Regional Athletics Stadium – Manchester City Reserves

For once, and probably only this once, I can admit that a stadium that’s design wasn’t for football is actually a great place to watch a game. The Regional Athletics Stadium in Manchester was built to serve as a practice track for the athletes competing in the Commonwealth games, it being situated right outside the City of Manchester Stadium.

And it’s really pleasing to see that after the games it wasn't turned into a car park and many sports clubs and athletics teams use it today. Seating is provided for 8,000 and all of it undercover, not that I’m making any reference to the weather in Manchester there at all. It’s not the best place for watching football due to the athletics track around the perimeter of the grass infield, but the shiny and comfortable look and feel of the place makes you quickly aware

you are in a quality setting. If Manchester City let their reserve team play on such a facility, you know it must be a decent place to play. A lovely place to spent an afternoon watching a football match and for a stadium with an athletics track aro und the perimeter, it scores very highly. Overall score: 8/10



Town History St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn

were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division.

Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953

and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and



Town History Brian Rigby. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Good shot stopper and equally adept in the air, also possess a good distribution with accurate throws and kicks. Will be looking to stake a claim for the keepers jersey. Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He

retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause



Town Pen Pictures havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Adam Gilchrist; Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield.

Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

Fan’s Eye View Good afternoon and welcome to Knowsley Road for this afternoons Vodkat, North West Counties League match against Abbey Hey. May the travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result. So it’s been further weather frustrations for St Helens Town as this unusually wet November continues to restrict the fixtures. Last Tuesday we

were supposed to be making the journey to Winsford United but heavy rain for the two days prior meant that the scheduled pitch inspection at the Barton Stadium produced an all too predictable result and the match was postponed. Add to that the fact that Town were supposed to play New Mills on the Saturday just gone, but the Derbyshire side having to play in the FA Vase on that day after replaying a fixture, meant this fixture was also postponed. So in fact the last time Town played a match was the last time we were all gathered here, a week last Tuesday for the Runcorn Linnets match. Hopefully the lads will have been put through some good training sessions in this time to keep them game fresh for this afternoons challenge. So having only played one game since my last set of programme notes

means there is only one game to reflect on, but I think I should be able to find plenty to say about that. Town entered the match against Runcorn Linnets down and out on the back of some embarrassing defeats and they

needed to produce a good performance on the night to get some belief back in themselves, and boy did they ever! It looked like it was going to be another frustrating night when Town went behind just before the 20 minute mark, but to their credit the players never let their heads drop at any point and battled back brilliantly, the Runcorn

keeper certainly had a busy time of it. Runcorn doubled their lead against the run of play on 40 minutes and it was at this point that I wondered if the game might be up despite Town’s better showing. But how wrong I was! Town

reacted superbly and Marc Stephens got a goal back in first half injury time to make the score 1-2 at the break. Town’s start to the 2nd half was emphatic and deadly as they scored twice in three minutes with goals from Mike Scully and Man of the Match Phil Mitchell (pictured above) to take a 3-2 lead, before Runcorn scored again a minute after to make it 3-3. Any

neutrals in the crowd were certainly getting their moneys worth. Town pushed on again and would score another three unanswered goals (Mike



Fargher, Ben Kay and Mike Scully again) to win the match 6-3 in a superb turn around of fortunes. A

satisfying result not just because of a thrashing of a near rival in the table, but because Town had played superbly well form whistle to whistle with only a few frailties, this has got to have given back some belief. This belief can hopefully be carried through into this afternoon’s fixture as Abbey Hey visit Knowsley Road. The reverse fixture saw Town open their

league campaign at the Abbey Stadium in emphatic style with a 5-1 victory and whilst Town have built on this start, Abbey Hey have continued to struggle. They currently sit at the foot of the division someway adrift of the

team above them, although a second win of the season this week and draw accounting for their seven points. This means nothing as far as today’s match is concerned however, anybody can beat anybody on the day and it will be up to Town to ensure that they play a high standard of football this afternoon if

they are to have any chance of getting some points from this fixture. So after what seems like a long break from seeing Town in action, football returns to St Helens this

afternoon. The atmosphere created by the home supporters at the Runcorn game was simply fantastic and almost certainly contributed to the success on that evening, we ask the same from you again this afternoon please. Be loud and be proud of the players and the team, and here’s to hoping we can all cheer them onto a victory here this afternoon. Stand tall and play proud

Vodkat League News New Signings At Bacup Borough Bacup Borough Manager Brent Peters has swooped to make the first of several expected new signings on the back of his side's disappointing exit from the FA Vase.

Peters has signed AFC Fylde's FA Vase winning captain, defender Dougie Shaw, following Dougie's announcement that he was quitting the successful Fylde coast club after eleven loyal years of service.

The 31 year old defender (pictured below) cited the travelling, along with the demands of running his own business, following Fylde's promotion into the Unibond League as his reasons for quitting Kellamergh Park. Shaw commented: "I am looking forward to my new challenge and I just want to get back to enjoying my football again".

Brent Peters said: "When I heard

about Dougie's situation I had to move fast. Not only is Dougie an excellent defender, he is very much a proven leader of men having captained a successful AFC Fylde team for several years. "While I have an excellent captain in Davey Luker, no team can have enough leaders. With Dougie now on

board, we have not only got a good experienced defender who is comfortable with the ball, but also another leader and a proven winner,

and that is important." Meanwhile, Brent has also successfully rushed through a United States of America International Clearance for defender Dominic Stockdale. Dominic, who resides in Heywood, has been playing his football out in the states on a USA Scholarship. Brent said: "Having seen Dominic play, although in a training arena due to not having had clearance, the lad has impressed me. Now we have obtained his clearance, when he gets the chance then hopefully he will prove to us that he does have all the attributes to go and perform in an

arena where results matter. If he achieves this, then Dominic will be another positive addition to the squad."

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town

Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players.

The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Tues 17th November; Vodkat Premier Division - St Helens Town 6-3 Runcorn Linnets Town got back to winning ways with a come from behind victory over Runcorn Linnets and completed the double over the Cheshire side in the process. The early stages saw action at both ends as first Marc Stephens found space, 20 yards out and his shot was deflected off target and wide for a corner. At the other end Rob Whyte collected a short Town pass and shot over the bar from 18 yards. The first goal of the contest was scored on 18 minutes when the visitors delivered a free kick into the box which Chris Burke headed away when given a shout he could have let it go behind for a goal kick, the ball back in play was picked up by David Sherlock and he found the left hand corner of the net with his shot. Town then dominated the proceedings in an attempt to level matters, Mike Fargher fed Marc Stephens and he shot just over the bar followed by Scully latching onto a ball over the top beating his marker and his curled effort from 25 yards looked in all the way but an excellent save by Phil Priestley pushed it over the bar. At the other end a rare Runcorn foray forward into the Town half saw a poor back pass headed away by Graeme McCall in the home goal and he had to recover quickly to tip Sherlock’s shot onto the post and behind. Normal service was resumed as Town poured forward, great work by Phil Mitchell on the left saw him get to the edge of the box where he unleashed a shot that the visiting stopper pushed around the post. Mitchell’s throw from the left then found Fargher who sent a lofted cross into the box and Scully’s header was kept out by another excellent save from Priestley. With half time approaching Mitchell again caused problems for Runcorn’s beleaguered back line as he got in behind them but could only shot over from a tight angle. Against the run of play Town were caught with a sucker punch, the lively Sherlock latched onto a through ball and was afforded plenty of space to shot home from the left hand side of the area. It could have been worse as Town had McCall to thank when he denied William Webb from 18 yards with an excellent save. Town got the goal they deserved for their first half play when Mitchell advanced into the box and his shot from the angle was pushed away by the keeper but Stephens collected the rebound and dispatched it to give the hosts hope going into the second half.

The second period started with a flurry of goals. Town levelled in the 51st minute when Fargher beat the defender on the right wing before sending a pinpoint cross into the box which Scully rose to head home. It was 3-2 less than 60 seconds later as Stephens and Mitchell linked with the latter showing some good footwork to beat his man and shot home from just inside the area. The lead was to be short lived as Sherlock completed his hat-trick when Webb found his from the left and he headed home. Just after the hour mark Town regained the lead, Mitchell broke into the box and found Fargher who shot through Priestley’s legs to make it 4-3. Moments later Scully linked with Mitchell who was denied another goal by a great save from the keeper. Town were then awarded a penalty after Fargher found Stephens in the box and he was pulled back by James Edwards with the referee pointing to the spot. Scully stepped up but sent his effort wide of the right hand upright from 12 yards. Sherlock twice almost pulled the Linnets back on terms but was thwarted on both occasions by McCall. First he got down low to make an excellent save after Sherlock had struck a shot from 25 yards and then he made another fine stop from the same player this time from the edge of the box. Town made the game safe with a brace of goals in the last fifteen minutes of the game. Ben Kay showed great feet to collect a through ball on the edge of the box turn his marker and find the right corner of the net from 15 yards out. The three points were wrapped up when Scully latched onto a kick from McCall beat the backline rounded the keeper and slotted home to end the losing streak in style and see Town rise to 5th in the table.

Management Changes at Willenhall Willenhall Town FC have confirmed that manager Shaun Cunnington and assistant Paul Tomlinson have left the club by mutual consent. The move came following Willenhall’s home defeat to Glapwell last Saturday.

The committee of the club would like to stress that these events are in no way connected to the results of the team, on the contrary, the committee are delighted,

that, under difficult conditions Shaun and Paul continued to produce a side capable of competing at UniBond League level, despite having no playing budget to work with. This move has come as the club feels it needs to reduce it’s financial liabilities as it looks towards rebuilding for the future. The club would like to thank Shaun and Paul for all the hard work they have put in, and wish them all the very best for the future. Steve Pomroy and Micky Rawlings will take over running the first team, starting

immediately. The committee would like to wish Steve and Micky all the luck in the world as the team continues to operate with scarce resources. Rossendale Lose a Friend

It is with deep sadness that Rossendale United has to report on the untimely death of former stalwart Billy Greenan aged 62yrs. Billy died suddenly last week. The funeral will be held at Burnley Crematorium at 10:40am on Friday 27th November. The family say everyone will be made welcome at a celebration of Billy's life. Drinks will be at the Rossendale United club after the funeral.

Billy was one of the gents of the game who enjoyed everything about his time with Rossy - one of the true

characters of non-league football. He was an integral part of the great Rossy side of the mid to late 1980's as the then Assistant Manager to Steve Conaghan, and played his part in one of the most successful sides in the history of the club. He will always be remembered for the craic he brought to the place. The hearts of everyone connected with Rossendale United go out to Billy's family at the time of their sad loss. There was a minutes silence held before the game versus Clitheroe on Tuesday night.

St. Helens Town AFC – Hall of Fame:

Derek Hennin, Tommy O’Neil and Dave Bamber Today, we close the Hall of Fame series by looking briefly at the careers of two players who began with league clubs, moving to St. Helens Town upon retirement from the senior game and a player who began at St. Helens and went on to play in all four divisions of the Football League. Derek Hennin was born in Prescot in 1932. He began his career at Bolton Wanderers in 1950, displacing England international Johnny Wheeler, who was transferred to Liverpool. He played right-half for Wanderers in their 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Wembley in the FA Cup Final in 1958, only three months after the Munich disaster. Among his team-mates that day were Nat Lofthouse and Dennis Stevens, who went on to win the Championship with Everton in 1962/63. Captain of the United side was ex-Town great Bill Foulkes. He had a brief spell at Wigan Athletic, but joined Town as player-manager in 1964, remaining in that position for nearly five years, featuring at right-half and inside forward.

Tommy O’Neil was born in Parr in 1952 and he was one of those gifted sportsmen who had a genuine choice between careers in football and rugby league, having represented England at both codes as a schoolboy. He opted for football and signed for Manchester United. He made his debut against Manchester City in May 1971 and played for three seasons alongside the legendary Best, Law and Charlton. However, he lost favour under new manager Tommy Docherty and was transferred to Southport and when the Sandgrounders lost their league status in 1978, O’Neil moved on to Tranmere Rovers, finishing his league career with Halifax Town in 1982.

Tommy returned home to captain St. Helens Town and led the team to FA Vase success at Wembley in 1987, the proudest moment of his career. He moved on to manage Skelmersdale United. Sadly, he lost his life to cancer at few years ago at the early age of just 53.

Dave Bamber began and ended his league career at Blackpool. He was a native of St. Helens and was born on 1st February 1959. He was a prolific goalscorer, netting 147 goals in 434 league appearances. He moved from Town to Bloomfield Road in 1979, making his debut against Chester. His first goal came against Carlisle in April 1980. Coventry City, then in the First Division, signed Bamber in 1983, but before the end of that season, he had moved on to Walsall. Short spells at Portsmouth and Trelleborgs (Sweden) were unproductive and in 1985,

Dave moved to Swindon Town, where he made 108 league appearances, scoring 31 goals. He was on the move again in 1988, this time to Watford, transferring to Stoke City and then to Hull City, before re-joining Blackpool in 1990, retiring in 1994.

He played twice at Wembley in play-off finals, being successful on the second occasion against Scunthorpe in 1992. On retirement from the game two years later, he remained in the Blackpool area, setting himself up as a property developer. Bamber was probably best remembered for the way he dipped forward to head the ball. GLYN JONES

Saints Alive . . . A man in Houston is working for a bus company, collecting fares

and issuing tickets. One day, he rings the bell for the driver to

set off while a woman is still boarding the bus. The bus moves

off and she falls beneath the wheels, crushing her to death. At his

trial, the man is found guilty of murder and, as it’s in Texas, he’s

sentenced to the electric chair. On the day of his execution, while

he’s being strapped into the chair, the condemned man is

granted a final wish. “Is that your packed lunch over there?” he

asks the executioner. “Yes,” replies the executioner. “Well then,

can I have that green banana?” asks the man. The executioner

agrees and gives the man his green banana, waits until he’s eaten it, then flips

the switch to send thousands of volts through him. But when the smoke clears

the man is still alive, apparently unharmed. The executioner is stunned. “Can I

go now?” asks the man. “This has never happened before, so I suppose you

can,” replies the executioner. The man leaves and eventually regains his old job

with the bus company. Some weeks later, he again rings the bell for the driver

to go when people are still getting on, and another passenger falls under the

wheels and is killed. Once again, he is found guilty of murder and sent to the

electric chair. The executioner is determined to do it right, so he rigs up the

chair to the electricity supply for the whole of Texas. Come the day of his

execution, the man is again allowed a final wish. “Can I have that green banana

from your packed lunch?” he asks. The executioner reluctantly gives up his

banana, letting the man eat it before flipping the switch to send millions of volts

coursing through the chair, and causing blackouts across the state.

When the smoke clears the man is still very much alive. Once again he is set

free and regains his old job with the bus company, but soon repeats his

previous actions, causing the deaths of three passengers. Found guilty of

murder, he is sentenced to death by electrocution for the third time. The

executioner rigs up all of the United States’ electricity supply to the chair in an

effort to ensure success this time. For his final wish, and unsurprisingly, the

condemned man asks, “Can I have that green banana out of your packed

lunch?” The executioner hands over his banana and the man eats it all, skin

included, before the switch is flipped to send trillions of volts through the chair.

When the smoke clears the man is still alive, without so much as a single burn

on him. “Oh, I give up,” says the executioner. “How can you still be alive after

all that? It’s something to do with all those green bananas isn’t it?” “Naah,”

replies the man, chuckling to himself. “It’s just that I’m a really bad

conductor!”
