Abbey Hey
Dave McCann Says Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British
Legion Stadium for this afternoon’s home league
fixture against Abbey Hey FC. First of all may I
welcome the management team and all associat-
ed with the club. I hope you feel welcomed and
that you have a safe journey home.
We have recently had two games called off due to the adverse weather that
everyone has been experiencing and this has slowed down our good run of
results that we’ve been experiencing. Myself, along with everyone else at the
club would much rather have games at this time of year even though everyone
is busy preparing for Christmas, etc. Hopefully the break we’ve had won’t have
a negative effect on the continuation of our recent run of form, but we know
that today will not be an easy fixture.
In both of last season’s games, I was really impressed with how they played,
and we were extremely lucky to gain a point here but I feel we were deserved
winners at theirs. I’m anticipating a really entertaining game today that either
team could win. We need to be ready for a tough game ahead and I’m hoping
the way we’ve prepared will ensure that we stand the best possible chance of
gaining the three points on offer.
There’s a possibility that our new signing, Mike Hall will play a part in today’s
game and with another new face that might be added to the squad in the
foreseeable future.
I hope you enjoy the game, have a happy Christmas and visit us again for our
next home game on Boxing Day against our local rivals AFC Blackpool.
Up the Gate!!
Squires Gate 2-0 Silsden
Royal British Legion
Attendance: 45
Saturday 6th December 2014
Squires Gate made it 1 loss in 12 with a 2-0 win against Silsden back at the
start of December. Goals from Mark Buchan and Alex Murphy moved Gate up
to 7th in the league with 37 points, just 3 points less than they had at the end
of last season. Gate made two changes from last Saturdays cup win with
Sean Holmes and Andrew Richards missing out. There was recalls to the side
for both Alex Murphy andAlex McKendrick who had both missed the last
game.
Squires Gate made a bright start to the game and just a couple of minutes into
the half, should have been ahead. Good work by Mark Buchan who's knock
down found Alex Murphy's run into the box, but his shot was gathered well by
the Silsden keeper. Gate looked the hungrier of the two sides in the opening
half and made it very tough for Silsden to keep the ball and play their normal
game. Gate made sure Silsden didn't have time on the ball but when the away
side did get through, the Gate defence stood firm. More great play from Harry
Dunn and Alex Murphy allowed the latter to find space in the corner of the 6
yard box but his shot hit the side netting, Gate getting closer.
The break though would come
shortly after for Gate, who
would take the lead. The corner
fired into the near post and with
the flick on won, Mark Buchan
was in the right place at the
right time to fire home in what
was a real poachers goal.
Good work from Harry Dunn to get in behind, at the back post but the end
product let the player down.
Into the second half Gate started as they'd started the first with a lot of high
pressure not allowing Silsden time on the ball. It took Gate 7 minutes to double
their lead a good ball into the danger area for Gate Alex Murphy taking the
chance and stretching to get a toe onto the ball and put Gate two up. Gate had
to be on their toes soon after with Josh Westwood in the right place to clear
the ball off the line and deny Silsden. As the half went on Silsden had their
chances to pull a goal back first a double save from Ben Fletcher to deny
them. Then Silsden had the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out for a foul.
After the game Gate manager said: “I thought we deserved our win today. We
had to work extremely hard against a good Silsden side for our win. Apart from
a spell after we scored our second goal we looked comfortable for the majority
of the game. There were some really good performances in a change of
formation which pleased me a lot.”

Macca’s Mid Season Review
For this Christmas programme, we asked
Squires Gate manager Dave “Macca”
McCann a few questions about his
thoughts on the season so far. On what
has been an impressive season for Gate
so far, find out what his favourite moment
as Gate manager is, and his thoughts of
Jack Sowerby moving to Fleetwood Town.
Before the season started,
what expectations did you
have of this season?
I expected us to do better
than last season and
wanted all those who still at
the club from last season to
learn and ensure that we
progressed.
In your opinion, who do you
think has been the toughest
opponent this season ?
Ashton Athletic. They beat
us at early on in the season
then dominated for 90
minutes at their place and
inflicted our worst defeat of
the season so far.
If you could bring any one
player to the club who
would it be?
Someone that would add
character and quality to
the changing room and
pitch.
In your opinion, who do
think will get promotion
this season ?
On current form Glossop
North End but it’s a long
season and anyone from
Runcorn Linnets, Glossop
or 1874 Northwich could
get promotion.
What has been the
greatest game in your
time as the manager of
Squires Gate?
There’s been a few, but
I’d say because of the
importance and the
circumstances it has to
be Wigan Robin Park
away last season. 2-0
down at half time with
our keeper sent off (our
right back and ambas-
sador Andy Richards in
goal) and we go and win
3-2 with a last minute
goal.
What are your thoughts on
the move of Jack Sowerby
to Fleetwood?
Over the moon for Jack. I’m
proud of the role all at
Squires Gate have plated in
making it happen, and I’m
obviously disappointed to
lose him but myself or
Squires Gate couldn't refuse
jack the opportunity to turn
professional.
If Gate were to finish in the
top six, what would your
expectations be for next
season? Or is it too early to
talk about at this point?
I think it’s too early to talk
about finishing in the top 6.
Like I said earlier on, the
aim from my point of view
was to progress on where
we are compared to last
season and I feel that so
far we have definitely done
that.
Overall, are you happy with
the team’s performance’s
in general?
Yes. I think the majority of
games they have applied
themselves really well. The
character and willingness
to do their best has been
first class so far.
Anything you’d like to
add? Any messages to
supporters, or staff?
Happy Christmas!!!
Thank you for your
support so far this
season. The players
appreciate all the hard
work that goes on
behind the scenes and
are enjoying what the
club has to offer them.
Abbey Hey FC was formed in 1902 in the Abbey Hey district of Gorton, some three miles away from the
centre of Manchester. During their formative years and through the two World Wars, the club was disbanded
and reformed on a number of occasions. Starting in the Church Sunday Leagues, they progressed through
the Manchester Amateur Leagues during the intervening years but the club really came into it's own in the
1960s after it took in the players of the Admiralty Gunning Engineering Department (AGED) following it's
closure. Alf Gentry, the Manager of Abbey Hey at this point, decided that with the influx of new players he
would step down in favour of the AGED Manager, Danny Danson. Alf, who had been for many years the
prime mover of the club, stayed on in a senior position and shared in the success that the club would have
in the coming years. The new players made up the backbone of the club during the decade with some
staying on after their playing careers had ended.
Most notable of these was Allan Vaughan, who occupied the positions of Treasurer and Secretary. Ken
Brown also stayed on; becoming manager after Danny Danson had retired, and won numerous honours
culminating in 1978 with the club deciding to apply for a position in the Manchester League. The application
was successful and the following year the club began playing in the 2nd Division of the Manchester League,
achieving promotion in their first season.
The next eighteen years were fairly successful with the club winning the Gilchrist Cup under Managers Jim
Whittaker and Dave Denby and a League title but this ended when Abbey Hey FC were told that as from the
start of the new season they would not be allowed to use Godfreys. This despite the large amounts of
money that they had spent on drainage and despite assurances when they had taken over the derelict
ground that as long as Abbey Hey had a football team this would be their ground. A temporary home, at the
old English Steel ground, was arranged on a season to season basis with the owners at theme, Clayton
Analine but after only 2 years, the ground was sold to a local builder who required the land to build houses
on. During the two years the club were based at the ground, negotiations with Crossley Motors Ltd had been
taking place to buy a disused ground they owned in Goredale Avenue, Gorton. Unfortunately, the land
was not in good order and was becoming an eyesore with fences falling down and people using it for fly-
tipping. Contractors working for the council had tipped 1,000 tons of hardcore onto the car park to prevent
access to the ground. Matters had reached an impasse between Abbey Hey FC and Crossleys when Man-
chester City Council stepped in, They informed Crossleys that if an agreement was not made with the peo-
ple that they were dealing with, the ground would be the subject of a compulsory purchase order. This
tipped the scales in favour of the football club who were asked to make an offer for the ground which was
promptly accepted.
Legal representation and a bank loan were quickly arranged and in 1984 the club at last had their own
home.
Abbey Hey
Manager: Luke Gibson Nickname: The Red Rebels
Ground: The Abbey Stadium Capacity: 1000
Meet today’s visitors, Abbey Hey.
The bank loan was paid off and the ground was improved including having the fly tipped hardcore removed
from the ground. These improvements to the ground could only have been achieved by the hard work and
dedication of the committee, who not only raised the money to carry out the improvements but also carried
out 90% of the work themselves. In 1997, after finishing 2nd in the Manchester Premier Division, the club ap-
plied for membership of The North West Counties League. Following a ground grading visit by League Offi-
cials, the club was accepted into the 2nd Division for the 1998 season. Abbey Hey's first season in the North
West Counties League couldn't have been more exciting. Although Fleetwood Freeport had taken the Divi-
sion Two title, the runners-up place was still to be decided. On the last Saturday of the season any one of
three clubs could have taken second place, but it was Abbey's 3-2 win at Darwen that clinched promotion to
Division One in their first season in the league.
In their first season in the top flight, Abbey Hey had a tremendous start, topping the table at one point early
in the season, but a drop in form saw them finish mid table. Still, a highly creditable first season in Division
One and they had more than proved themselves worthy of their rapid rise from the Manchester League to
the NWCFL Division One.
2000/01 again saw Abbey finish in a comfortable mid table position, proving that the season before had been
no fluke, but the following season started with a run of poor results including some heavy defeats.
In 2009/10 Abbey Hey was half way through the season with only 4 points to their name and in the base-
ment position in the league after 25 games. However, following the appointments of Barrie Walker as Man-
ager and Andrew Harris as Assistant Manager in November 2009, Abbey Hey made several new signings
with the likes of Jon-Paul Lewis, Gareth Wager, Daniel Cocks, John Hardy, Darren Evans, Lee Knowles and
Nathan Finnigan joining the club. This signalled a turn in fortune for the club as they picked up 30 points in
the 2nd half of the season however it wasn't enough and they were relegated from the North West Counties
Premier Division.
For the 2011/12 season, Walker's youth policy started to pay quick dividends as the team has made an ex-
cellent start to the league season, remaining in the top four of Division One from day one. Though a run of
poor results saw them exit the NWCFL Challenge Cup, FA Vase and 1st Division Trophy they did take the
notable scalp of Evo Stik North team Radcliffe Borough in the first round of the Manchester Cup. The season
really stepped up a gear as they moved into 2012 with Abbey at one point pushing Wigan Robin Park and
Norton United for one of the two promotion places. Though they were to ultimately finish in 3rd place, the
season had been an undoubted success as Walker had built a promotion challenging team in just 2 sea-
sons.
The 2012/13 campaign started better than anyone at the club could have imagined as the team went unbeat-
en in the league for the first 3 months. Although unsuccessful in the FA vase, they would eventually reach
the latter stages of the FA Cup qualifiers and a plum tie at FC Halifax via fantastic wins at St Helens Town
and Sheffield. Rarely stepping out of the top two in Division One, Abbey continued to rack up league wins
whilst also moving thru the Challenge Cup, Div One Trophy and Manchester Premier Cup rounds. The first
team success was also matched by the newly introduced youth team set up. Both Under 17s and 18s topped
their respective Youth Alliance Divisions during the year and impressed many with their style of play and ap-
plication. As the months progressed a few of the older youth players started to appear in the first team, bod-
ing well for the future. Come April and a win at Northwich Villa eventually sealed promotion back into the top
flight of the NWCFL ladder.

Match Preview Welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium for this afternoon’s NWCFL fixture
between Squires Gate and Abbey Hey. It’s good to be back after a few postponed
matches due to the weather, and it’s only 4 days until Christmas!
It seems like it’s been months since we had a home game, with the last one being 2
weeks ago, when we played Silsden. The 2-0 win saw Gate climb up to 7th, and
within reach of 6th placed Nelson. A win today would put Squires Gate onto 40
points, which was the same amount that they accumulated throughout the whole of
last season. A run to be proud of as well, losing just once in 12 games, which came
in a 4-0 defeat away to Ashton Athletic.
Well, today’s opponents Abbey Hey, currently sit 17th in the league and will be hard
to beat as their away form shows, with only one defeat in their last 6. In the last
meeting here, the game ended 2-2 and both teams shared the points. Gate will also
want to extend their impressive home run, winning five of their last six at the Royal
British Legion.
Thank you for attending today’s match, and for your continued support. We hope
you have a fantastic Christmas, and a well earned break. Be sure to pick up some
treats from our clubhouse, including some Krispy Kreme doughnuts, mince pies or
just a cup of tea! We hope to see you here on Boxing Day for the visit of our local
neighbours AFC Blackpool. So here it is, Merry Christmas…..you know the rest!
Oh, and enjoooooooy the game!

Gate FC. Facts and stats are 99.9% accurate.)
NWCFL Newsletter
The wintery weather dominated the NWCFL fixture list on Saturday with only
three matches taking place in the Premier Division and four in the First
Division, although one of those, at Cheadle Town, was eventually abandoned
due to floodlight failure.
Glossop North End's Premier Division title push continued on Saturday when
they won their third game in a row to reduce the deficit on league leaders
Runcorn Linnets to nine points with four games in hand. Their 3-0 win over
Ashton Athletic, thanks to two goals from Tom Bailey and one from Ben
Richardson, saw them pass the 100 goal mark in all competitions - no mean
feat before Christmas.
Congleton Town moved into seventh spot with a 3-1 win over Barnoldswick
Town, a result that leaves the visitors perilously close to the drop zone. Mark
Threlfall had given Barlick a first half lead before John-Paul Hudson responded
for the home side to leave the scores level at the break. Second half goals
from Liam Crellin-Myers and Nathan Haynes secured the three points for the
home side.
West Didsbury & Chorlton are up to 11th after a fine 2-1 win at Runcorn Town,
who find themselves in an unfamiliar 16th position in the table after being title
challengers for the past few seasons. Gary Lilly and Adam Hilton put the
visitors into a two goal lead before Paul Shanley struck back on the stroke of
time but it was too little too late for Town.
Gate 2-2 Abbey Hey
Last Time Out
Squires Gate welcomed North West Counties
Premier League new boys Abbey Hey to the Royal
British Legion Stadium as they looked to build on
Tuesday's 3-0 win over St Helens Town.
The away side didn't take long to settle into the
match, Ben Fletcher pulling off two early saves to
deny them the lead but on 23 minutes their early
pressure paid off when Jonathan Hardy headed in the opening goal.
0n 35 minutes Gate forward Max Landless should have drawn the sides level but
he miskicked his shot after good work to find space. Three minutes later he made
amends for the miss as he rose highest in the area to nod to the ball goal wards
and then bundle the ball over the line under heavy pressure from two Abbey Hey
defenders for his first of the season.
The second half began the same as the first with Abbey Hay applying all the
pressure, however, it was Gate who added to their tally in the 61st minute,16 year
old sub and debutant Joe Noblet picking up the ball 20 yards out and cool as you
like, placing his shot wide of the keeper.
Abbey Hey continued to create chances and Ben Fletcher continued to deny them
but they did find an equaliser on 75 minutes, Tom Murray beating the gate keeper
with a long range effort.
The final 15 minutes could have seen either side pinching all three with gate going
the closest hitting the post in the 85th minute .
