of all may I welcome Bootle’s management

team and all associated with the club. I hope

you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home.

We have recently been on a good run of form and results but were

brought back down to earth with a bump on Tuesday night with the re-

sult at Ashton Athletic. The performances at Nelson in the MEN United

Cup, Barnoldswick and Runcorn in the league were particularly impres-

sive considering we were away from home. We showed a togetherness

and quality that enabled us to run out convincing winners on all 3 oc-

casions. Tuesday however was a stark reminder that no team can take

any game for granted. We know we underperformed massively in that

game and are eager to put in a positive performance today that will

enable us to get the result we want

Today we face Bootle who have traditionally been a strong team in this

league for a number of years. We shared the points on the opening

day of the season in a very entertaining game. I hope today’s game is

just as entertaining but we come out on top.

Squires Gate 3-2 Stockport Sports

Squires Gate hosted Stockport Sports on Saturday. Gate returned to the Royal

British Legion Stadium and league action after a successful 3-1 in the MEN United

Cup away to Nelson last weekend. Stockport Sports came into the game having

registered 16 new players with new manager Matthew Broadhead looking to make

an impact following a 6-1 loss to Congleton Town in the Cheshire Cup. Gate made

two changes to the starting line up for this game with Alex Colquhoun and Jake

Forshaw both coming in.

The home side could have been ahead early into the game,Jack Sowerby doing all

the hard work in rounding the keeper but couldn't find the finish to match the skill.

Gate again had the chance to open the scoring but Alex Murphy's drive from the

edge of the box just rose over the bar. Gate were made to pay the price on the

20th minute when the referee awarded a dubious penalty. Gate struggled to clear

the ball and whilst trying to do so took down a Stockport attacker. Keeper Ben

Fletcher dived the right way to save the ball but Ryan Humphreys reacted quickest

to open the scoring for Stockport. Gate weren't behind for long though as straight

from kick off Harry Dunn attacked down the left and squared the ball to Jack Sow-

erby who equalised for Squires Gate. In the space of five minutes Sowerby could

have scored another but after finding himself one on one with the goalkeeper he

couldn't slot the ball through the onrushing keepers legs. The game was quickly

turning into the Sowerby show and he made it two just before half time. Good work

from Jake Forshaw down the right found Sowerby in acres of space to easily slot

away his and Gates second.

Moving into the second half and Stockport made a change as the half began. It

was the away side who would draw level, a very impressive passing move involv-

ing 4 separate eventually ending with Ryan Humphreys scoring his second of the

day. Like in the first half it didn't take Gate long to reply to Stockport scoring. Just

seven minutes on the clock was all it took for Gate to reply. As the corner was fired

into the box the referee blew the whistle and indicated a Gate players shirt was be-

ing pulled. Jack Sowerby stepped up and converted the penalty with confidence to

score his and Gates third of the game. The close of the game saw little chances

for either teams, Gate looked comfortable and the home side see saw out what

was their 5th win of the season. This win see's Gate move up to 14th in the league

with 4 games in hand on the team above.

This weekend, league leaders host strugglers St Helens Town, looking to extend

their lead after s 4-3 win over Congleton Town on Tuesday. After a surprising 5-0

win for Barnoldswick Town last weekend over fellow strugglers Stockport Sports.

They play away to Ashton Athletic, who are on a high after their 4-0 victory over

Squires Gate on Tuesday so that game promises to have plenty of goals. 2nd

placed Glossop North End play away to Colne. Meanwhile AFC Blackpool play

away to West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Barnoldswick Town 1-3 Squires Gate

Barnoldswick on Tuesday night looking to continue their good form from the

last couple of games. Gate made two changes from Saturday with Josh

Westwood coming back in for Colquhoun and Chris Anderson coming in

for Jake Forshaw.

Gate started much the better side and could have been ahead early on, but

the Barnoldswick goal keeper got down well at the feet of Harry Dunn to stop

the shot. Gate had a shout for a penalty soon on, Jack Sowerby sent

through the middle and was brought down but the referee waved away the

protests. Great work from Harry Dunn through the middle who's pass creat-

ed a chance for Brett Ferguson but his shot was fired over. To say it was all

Gate in the first half was an understatement and they would have been very

unlucky not to go in, in the lead at half time.

The start to the second half couldn't have started any different to the first. It

was Barnoldswick who took the lead, Gate lost the ball from the throw in and

Barnoldswick pounced to open the scoring. Gate replied soon after, Harry

Dunn reacting quickest after the keeper spilled the ball from a Sowerby free

kick. Brett Ferguson had the chance to double Gates lead but his shot flew

over the bar. Gates next goal came from a mix up in the defence and Jack

Sowerby slid through to score a brilliant goal. Gate made the game comfort-

able soon after, Josh Westwood volleying in straight from the corner. Gate

controlled the game and slowed it down for the end of the game. The team

defended as a unit and saw out the game to win 3-1.

After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said "I thought it was a de-

serve win for the lads, we could have had 2 or 3 in the first half. Disappoint-

ed to go behind in the second half but the lads texted well. We're looking for-

ward to the game against Runcorn on Saturday who like ourselves had a

good cup run and are in some decent form".

Barnoldswick Town 1-3 Gate

Match Preview Good afternoon, and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium for our NWCFL Premier

Division fixture against Bootle. It is the 12th game between the two sides, with history going

in Bootle’s favour but recent form is in Squires Gate’s favour. So today, it is certain to be a

well fought battle. Back in August, when these sides last met, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

But since then, both sides have played plenty of games. In their last game. Squires Gate

played away to high flyers Ashton Athletic, on a cold Tuesday night, a 4-0 defeat ended

Gate’s 5 game unbeaten run.

On the back of a fantastic victory over Runcorn Town, where Gate walked away with all 3

points in a 7-2 win. Super striker Jack Sowerby netted yet another hat trick, and Westwood

also scored twice in a game that manager Dave McCann said he would have been happy

winning 1-0.

In the last home game Squires Gate beat strugglers Stockport Sports, where Jack Sowerby

scored a hat trick, and has now netted 16 times in 15 games. An impressive record, which

I’m sure would of attracted attention off of other clubs. Jack will want to get back on the score

sheet today after a goalless game midweek.

Now back on to today’s game. Bootle have had the same kind of form as Squires Gate, both

teams losing just once in their last 6 matches, Bootle winning 4, and Gate winning 3. So if I

was to predict a result for today’s game, I would say a draw. However, Bootle have a better

away record then Gate’s home record.

With only Maine Road sitting between the two sides in the league table, there is only 1 point

separating the two sides and a win for either side could put them up to 9th which would be

the aim for today.

Bootle

The original Bootle F.C. were formed in 1880 and played at Hawthorne Road. In 1889/90 Bootle

became founder members of the Football Alliance. That season was their most successful as

they finished league runners-up, reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they lost to

Blackburn Rovers (0-7).

When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members

of the new Second Division. However, despite a respectable 8th place final position, the club

dropped out after one season (and were replaced by neighbours Liverpool) and seemingly dis-

appeared due to financial problems.

Football returned to Hawthorne Road when a new club, Bootle Athletic. was later formed with

the new team initially playing in the Liverpool Leagues. In 1948 when they were elected to the

Lancashire Combination 2, which they won at the first attempt. However, they struggled in the

top-flight and after several tough seasons withdrew and folded during the 1953/54 campaign.

In 1953, the current club was formed at first as Langton and played in the local leagues. After a

very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination (which they won on numerous occa-

sions) the club reverted back to its better known identity of Bootle F.C. in 1973 and a year later

joined the Lancashire Combination, which they won in 1976 and 1977. They then joined the

Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which they won in their first season, and were

promoted to the First Division.

In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North

West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division. The

club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when they dropped into the Second

Division. However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County

Combination. In 2006 they were elected back into Division 2 of the North West Counties League.

In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCL Premier Division and also won the Championship.

The Bucks first season back in the Premier Division was relatively successful finishing 3rd in the

league and also a successful run in the FA Vase. Bootle`s attendance record was also broken

when 1088 (previously 750) watched the Liverpool senior cup tie between the Bucks and

Everton.

The home side were the first onto the attack, without testing Dean Porter, in the visitor’s goal. but Bootle pushed up on the pitch, winning a corner, which was cleared, only for it to be returned, and within five minutes James Riley, came in from the right to put them in the lead. Gate looked as though they would soon draw level, with Sowerby running at the de-fence, only to be blocked by the advancing Porter. Then McKenna, and Richards having shots, but without testing the keeper. While at the other end, Ben Fletcher was called upon to come to the rescue when Connor Christiansen broke free to shoot. He made a couple of blocks as the visi-

tors broke through Gate’s defenders.

On the half hour Bootle went 2 up when Lee Thompson buried a free kick into the top cor-ner, giving Fletcher no chance. Gate worked the ball down both flanks, and on 45mins the stroke of half time a cross from Seydou Bamba, was collected by Jack Sowerby, who calmly scored from 26 yards, and the home side went into the break looking on top.

The second half saw Gate pushing forward and a goal looked imminent as shots from, Richards, Carney, Sowerby, Russell, were blocked and deflected, while the visitors looked happy to absorb all that Gate threw at them, and relying on long clearances for breaka-ways, and would count themselves unlucky, as the ball was cleared off the line several times. But goal number three was a carbon copy of the last home game conceded two weeks earlier, Bootle chased down the right after a long clearance, and the winger was brought down within feet of the corner flag. The resulting free kick was met by Grant Pru-den, for goal number three on 63 minutes. The visitor’s goal area was the busiest place for the closing 15mins of the game, but their defence held firm, against all that Gate threw at them. Max Rothwell, came on for his first game of the season, after suffering a broken leg at the end of last season, but Gate lost leading scorer Jack Sowerby with a calf injury. Andy Richards effort brought a save from Porter, and the long clearance, was met by Ben Fletch-er, his clearance hitting advancing forwards shins, who fell from the impact. To the sur-prise of all, the referee surprisingly awarded a penalty, which Jamie Hay converted on 90+ minutes, the 22nd goal against Squires Gate, in the last 8 games.

Manager Dave McCann told the Gazette, "Thought for periods of the game we gave as good as we got and looked dangerous. Our intensity was good and looked like we could get something from the game. Ultimately though errors and poor decision making have cost us dearly. Individuals need to eliminate mistakes from their game and focus a lot better so that correct decisions are made and then we’ll give ourselves a chance. At the moment were beating ourselves rather than the opposition beating us"

Saturday 8th November

Squires Gate travelled to Runcorn Town on Saturday, looking to continue their 5 game unbeaten run

which has seen Gate win three and draw two. Gate remained unchanged from Tuesday night's

win away at Barnoldswick. Gate sat 14th in the league before this encounter with Runcorn in 16th

just four points behind Gate. Both teams had been labelled "cup teams" coming into this game

due to their cup success both teams beating higher opposition in the earlier rounds.

It took Gate just five minutes to get the scoring underway the inform Jack Sowerby past two men

with ease to fire in to make it 15 goals for the season. Gate seemed to be playing with a swagger

and confidence that has been evident all season for them. Good work from Winger Dunn down

the left almost created a second for Gate but his cross found the keepers gloves. Jack Sower-

by could have had a second soon after but he chose to take another touch instead of shooting

and the keeper collected. Into the 28th minute Danny Penswick found himself with a goal scoring

chance on the edge of the box but just struggled to get the ball out of his feet, luckily for Gate Alex

Murphy was just behind him to take the ball off his toes and score Gate second of the game. The

home side were not without chances in the first half though, their best chance coming just after

Gate had scored their second but the home side could only find the post. It was Harry Dunn who

again attacked Town down the wing his cross was inch perfect to find Alex Murphy on the penalty

spot to volley home for his second and Gates third of the afternoon.

Into the second half and it took Gate just 2 minutes to add another, fine work by Harry

Dunn through the middle of the park, who in turn found Jack Sowerby for the striker to score his

second and Gate's fourth of the match. The ever lively Harry Dunn again linked up well with Jack

Sowerbyfor the latter to score his third of the game and his seventeenth of the season. Alex Mur-

phy could have had his hatrick shortly after but his drive from the edge of the box was just tipped

over by the keeper. Good work again from Harry Dunn on the left, whose performance deserved a

goal, his cross into the box took a nasty deflection from the Runcorn defender who scored the un-

fortunate own goal. With a six goal lead Gate look comfortable but as the second half went on

Runcorn looked to get back into the game. A ten minutes of madness for Gate occurred after their

sixth goal with the home side pulling two goals back. First Chris Lawton scored from the corner

after Gate had cleared off the line and Fletcher had saved well. Then ten minutes later Ross Da-

vies hit the post and was first to the rebound to score Runcorn's second. But Gate weren't done

scoring for the day and added a seventh late on sub Mark Buchan opening his account for the

club with a sweet strike right into the top corner, making it impossible to save.

It's the second time this season that a Squires Gate game has finished 7-2 to Gate, Gates home

game to Alsager on the 20th September. After the game Squires Gate manager Dave McCann

said: Today was one of those game where every time we went forward we looked a threat. We

counter attacked really well with lots of pace but lost of quality as well. The team performance was

probably one of the best since I've been in charge.

NWCFL Newsletter The first snap of winter saw wind and rain sweep over the North West, but only two NWCFL

games fell victim to the weather on day when fixtures in both divisions produced plenty of talk-

ing points.

In the Premier Division, the top three teams all won to maintain their challenge in the promo-

tion race.

Runcorn Linnets stay top after recovering from the loss of an early goal at Maine Road to even-

tually triumph 3-1.

Under the managerial stewardship of the inimitable Derek Barber once more, Maine Road took

a 15th minute lead through Connor Hughes before Adam Wade levelled for Linnets on the half

hour mark. Two second half goals from Kyle Hamid secured the points for the visitors.

Glossop North End stay in second place after a comfortable 4-0 win over Winsford United. Two

goals in the opening 24 minutes from Jason Carey sent the Hillmen on their way, and Luke

Mack and Kieran Lugsden doubled the score in the second half.

1874 Northwich are third in the table, with goals in each half from Matthew Ward and

Matthew Beadle earning a 2-0 win at Silsden in a game that was preceded by a Remembrance

Service at the Angel Telecom Stadium.

Ashton Athletic lost ground on the top three after being held to a 1-1 draw at Congleton Town,

Sam Bailey equalising for Athletic four minutes after Christopher Middleton had put the Bears

ahead.

Nelson narrowed the gap between themselves and AFC Liverpool to one point, with a 2-1 win

over the Reds at Victoria Park. After Jack Sinnot had levelled after Peter Wright's early opener

for Nelson, George Melling grabbed the winner for the Admirals with seven minutes remaining.

The most eye catching result of the day was at the Pavilions, where Squires Gate inflicted Run-

corn Town's heaviest defeat in the NWCFL, winning 7-2, after being 6-0 up inside the

hour. Jack Sowerby scored his third hat trick of the season and his second in succession for

Gate, with Alex Murphy scoring twice. Colne also turned in an impressive goalscoring display

away from home, winning 5-2 at St Helens Town with Spencer Jordan scoring a hat trick. Dan-

ny Boyle, scorer of two hat tricks himself this season, also got on the scoresheet for the visi-

tors.
