v AFC Darwen

NWCFL Premier Division
Kick Off: 19.45

DANNY
PENSWICK Saturday showed what a good
strong side we can be.
Padiham are a very good side
with some excellent individual
talents. Yet we dominated the
game for large periods and
you could argue that their
goals were slightly against the
run of play.
We’ve been working on
getting the ball on the floor
and playing to our strengths
more and the first half
showed some of what we are
capable of. I still want more
but our style of play was a
marked improvement on re-
cent weeks.
What also impressed me was
the character and desire that
we showed to come back and
win the game.
.
We welcome AFC Darwen to
The Royal British Legion, in
what promises to be a tight
encounter. A new manager in
charge of Darwen will repre-
sent a different threat than
what greeted us at the Anchor
Ground just over a month ago.
Whilst we came away with a
point, it was only a last gasp
equaliser that gave us a share
of the spoils, so we know that
we will need to be at our col-
lective best to get anything
from the game.
Since then we’ve added a few
new players to the squad and
are actively looking to play a
more patient and attacking
brand of football. Something
which I hope will improve
both players and fans’ encour-
agement for the future.
After a well deserved 3 points
on Saturday, the lads are full
of confidence as we look to
build on a good run of results
in order to climb the table.
Let’s hope we can maintain
the standards that were
shown on Saturday, get our
third win in a row and give the
Gate faithful something to
cheer about.
Up The Gate!!
Danny
IN TODAYS PROGRAMME
In tonight’s programme we take a trip back to 2002. AFC Darwen assistant manager Nick Lloyd
about the opposition in ‘VIEW FROM THE AWAY END’. We take ‘A TRIP DOWN MEMORY
LANE’ to our game against Congleton Town in March 2014. In our prediction league we have
Gate midfielder Joe Noblet who will attempt to knock Ben Fletcher off his perch at the top. We
also have an indepth look at today’s opposition.
Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD)
Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets and
played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll
be looking to continue his fine form.
Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship)
Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the
pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.
Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship)
After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on
a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the
2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd)
One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell,
consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions.
A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the
Year 2014/15.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship)
A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin
of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A
player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore)
Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and
chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do
the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)
Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial
to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the
same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship)
Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the pace
to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team.
Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship)
Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny
Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the squad.
Josh Kay (Available for sponsorship)
One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end
of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for
non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from
others around him.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship)
Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship
of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable
jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15
season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship)
The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make
the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can
have a big influence on games when in the mood.
Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship)
Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC
Fylde and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team
mates and is very good at holding the ball up.
Ashley Rowley (Travel Care World)
Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He
scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an
impact this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White)
Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the
2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player.
His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point
of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship)
Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His
workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals dur-
ing last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player
during this season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship)
Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in
2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t
take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can
also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a
spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

Squires Gate returned to league
action this weekend as they hosted
Padiham. The game was the second
time in the month that the two
teams had met with Gate 1-0 victors
early in the month.
Manager Danny Penswick made
three changes after Saturday’s win
including his return to the side after
injury. Buchan and Mckenna. also
returned with Colquhoun and Row-
ley dropped to the bench. Ryan
Tanser who scored on his debut last
weekend was unavailable due to
work commitments.
The game started off at a quick pace
with Gate almost taking the lead
after good early pressure. Mckenna
played the ball over the top of the
defence to find the run of Buchan
but his first time shot was saved
after 7 minutes. Although the visi-
tors were not without there own
early chances they hit the inside
of the post after 10 minutes after
Turner broke forward down the
right wing.
Josh Kay was the next to take aim
but
after drifting inside from the wing
his shot fell the wrong side of the
post.
The same end result happened again
soon after, this time Buchan and
Noblet linked up well but the latter
dragged his shot wide. It would be
the visitors who would open the
scoring. Padiham striker Egan play-
ing off the last man to burst forward
and round Fletcher to take the lead.
Billy Mckenna had the chance to
equalsie soon after for Gate when a
deflected ball found its way through
to him but his left footed shot was
well saved. Mckenna was again in-
volved soon after, clever play on the
edge of Padiham’s box with the ball
being fed into Buchan’s feet. He
took the ball in his stride and
fired Gate level on 22 minutes.
More clever passing from Gate saw
Joe Noblet through on goal he
poked the ball past the keeper but
the ball was cleared off the line be-
fore it could roll over for a goal.
Padiham had a chance of there own
the ball being played across the face
of goal but nobody could connect
with 5 minutes left of the first half.
Padiham had the last chance of the
half but Fletcher did well one on one
to deny Egan.
Gate didn’t get off to the best of
starts in the second half conceding
after 4 minutes. Silly mistakes in
defence meant former Gate player
Curtis Haley had the easy task of
tapping in the ball from inside the
box. Gate looked to attack the game
and bought both Riley and Rowley
on to get at Padiham’s defence. The
change would pay off for Gate as
soon after they’d equalise. Defender
Nathan Trout firing home from the
corner for his first goal for the club.
The change would play an influential
part in the outcome of the game as
9 minutes from full time, sub Ash
Rowley would give Gate the lead.
The ball being cut back to the edge
of the box for the winger to let fly
and win the game for Gate. The win
moves Gate one place up the table
to 20th two points behind Silsden
although they have more games to
play.

LEAGUE LEAGUE CUP FA CUP FA VASE 2015/16 CARDS
I have now been working at
Squires Gate for over 2 years, and
it’s fair to say I feel at home at
the club. Ever since my first
game, I have felt welcome and
continued to help as much as I
can around the club. Going from
selling the match day pro-
grammes, to editing them and
also working on the turnstile.
My first game was against 1874
Northwich. In what was a very
disappointing display, and a bad
start to my time at the club, I
learnt a lot about what happens
behind the scenes at a non league
club.
Squires Gate is a well run club,
with volunteers who put a lot of
time and effort into making these
match days possible. It shows you
just how much a football club
means to some people.
Before volunteering for Squires
Gate, I worked at Blackburn Rov-
ers selling food at half time, and
would travel down there every
Saturday for the sake of £25. For
me, it’s not about the money.
The Great
Ashton Athletic 1
Squires Gate 2
This was my second game watch-
ing Squires Gate away from home
and we needed to win to stay in
the Premier, it was always going
to be a tense game. After conced-
ing in the first 10 minutes, Gate
had a ‘never say die’ attitude and
stayed up thanks to a great free
kick from Jack Sowerby.
The Good
Bamber Bridge 2
Squires Gate 2
I’m all for cup upsets, and we
were lucky not to win this. To go
to a place like Bamber Bridge and
earn a replay was a great result,
along with a class strike from
Andy Richards from about 30
yards.
The Ugly
Runcorn Town 5
Squires Gate 0
After thrashing them 7-2 away
from home last season, I ex-
pected to get something from
them at least. We were just out-
played from the start, and it just
looked like everyone had given up
after they went 2-0 up. Was not a
good day all round.
Tonight we host AFC Darwen
looking to get out the bottom
three, and we go into the game
with back to back wins - some-
thing that we have not done yet
this season. Danny Penswick has
brought some great attacking
build up play to Squires Gate and
we are getting the wins needed.
We can’t underestimate the visi-
tors though, after they have
pulled off some great results of
their own - beating 1874 North-
wich being one of them and they
were close to taking all 3 points
when we played them in Septem-
ber, if it wasn’t for a last gasp
equaliser.
I hope everyone enjoys the game,
and has a safe journey home.
Good luck for the rest of the sea-
son.
Dan
This week, we interviewed AFC Darwen’s assistant
manager Nick Lloyd and asked him a few questions
about todays opposition.
He talks about his most memorable moment, the best
goal that he has seen, and which three premier league
players he would have at AFC Darwen.
We’d like to thank Nick for his time.
After being promoted from
the First Division, how do
you think you have coped so
far? You’ve suffered some
heavy defeats but picked up
some great wins along the
way too. Where are you
hoping to finish this season?
I feel we have been okay this
season, it’s a steep learning
curve and early on in the sea-
son, we were guilty of not
taking our chances and were
not defending well enough
against well equipped sides.
What has been your most
memorable moment or
game within your time at
AFC Darwen?
I can answer that with one
game. The play off final
against Hanley, the final goal
sparked a reaction from the
players and crowd that I will
never forget.
In the FA Vase, you were
knocked out by 2014 final-
ists West Auckland Town.
Have you been to Wembley
on any occasions? What
would be your dream?
I’ve never been to Wembley,
but to go there with AFC Dar-
wen in any competition
would be a dream.
What has been the best goal
you have ever seen at any
level? From non league to
the top divisions?
I struggle to remember any
individual goals, but I’d say
the first goal in the Reusch
cup final last year. It was a
dream of a cross and Paul
Coote was there with an un-
stoppable header to give us a
platform for the victory
If you could pick 3 Premier
League players to join AFC
Darwen on a free transfer,
who would they be and
why?
Jamie Vardy would be a
great addition, he’s got the
Pace and has proven that he
can score goals at every lev-
el. He’s on great form at the
moment.
I’d also have David De Gea,
he’s just a top keeper. Any
club would love to have him I
think.
My last addition would be
Gary Cahill, a solid centre
back and would strengthen
our back line for sure.
What is your prediction for
today’s game?
Tonight I can’t go for really
go for anything other than a
Darwen victory. The belief I
have in the players, I expect
nothing less. I hope its an en-
joyable game for people to
watch, played by 2 teams in
the right way.
Six of our sides progressed through into the second round of the FA Vase,
with another, Northwich Manchester Villa, facing a midweek replay. The
most impressive winners of the afternoon were Colne, who won 5-1 at
Athersley Recreation. The Reds were 2-1 up at half time, but it wasn't
until the last 18 minutes that victory was sealed, with goals from Danny
Boyle, Adam Stockdale and Jason Hart in an eight minute spell. 1874
Northwich and both Runcorn clubs emerged victorious from the all-
NWCFL ties. It took goals from Matthew Ward and Daniel Cowley in the
last 18 minutes to help 1874 Northwich to a 4-2 win at Rochdale Town,
and two goals in the opening 27 minutes from Paul Shanley earned Run-
corn Town a 2-0 win over Abbey Hey. Across town at the Millbank Linnets Stadium, Runcorn Lin-
nets trailed at half time to a Samuel Howell goal for Winsford United, but a Michael White penal-
ty and a Kyle Hamid strike saw Linnets through to a 2-1 win. Atherton Collieries had a comforta-
ble 2-0 win over Newcastle Benfield, with two goals from Mark Truffas either side of half time
seeing them through to the next round, and Scott Dundas made a winning start to his managerial
rein at Alsager Town, although it took a penalty shoot out to see the Bullets to victory after they
had been tied 2-2 with Borrowash Victoria after extra time. Northwich Manchester Villa face a
midweek replay at Whitley Bay, after the sides drew 1-1 after extra time, Guy Ansah-Palmer on
target for Villa in a game played at Irlam's Silver Street ground.
Three clubs lost at home to opponents from Northern League. Congleton Town lost 5-1to Marske
United, Silsden lost 4-2 to Sunderland RCA, and the most remarkable game of the afternoon was
at Brookburn Road, where West Didsbury & Chorlton were four goals down after 37 minutes to
Morpeth Town, managed to get the score back to 4-4 in the 90th minute, only to lose 5-4 with a
goal in stoppage time.
There were five games in the Premier Division, and Bootle moved into third place with a 6-0 win
over AFC Blackpool, Dominic Marie grabbing a hat trick for the second time this season.
Two first half goals from Mathew Morgan earned Maine Road a 2-0 win at Ashton Athletic, and
there was an exciting end to the game at Victoria Park where Nelson equalised in the 88th minute
against AFC Liverpool with an Andrew Bell penalty, only for the visitors to snatch the win with a
goal in the last minute from Jordan Williams.
Goals in the last 15 minutes from Nathan Trout and Ash Rowley saw Squires Gate come from be-
hind to win 3-2 at home to Padiham, and Barnoldswick Town drew 2-2 with Cammell Laird 1907.

On 22 December 2003 Carlsberg Tetley tried to wind up Darwen Football and Social Club. The club avoided liquida-
tion on that occasion. On 14 April 2008 another winding up petition was brought by The Bee radio station in respect
of £8000 owed for advertising. Plans were made for Blackburn with Darwen Council to buy the Anchor Ground. Fol-
lowing two further petitions for liquidation brought by Thwaites Brewery and ING Lease UK and their refusal of an
offer of 25p in the pound, on 14 May 2009 Darwen Football Club was wound up in the High Court.
The 134-year-old Darwen FC therefore ceased to exist. However, almost immediately, there were plans for a new
Darwen football club to be formed. This was achieved before the start of the 2009–10 season as AFC Darwen, but the
reformed club had to start at Step 7 (Level 11) of the football pyramid and apply for admission to the West Lanca-
shire League, which was granted and they entered straight in at the Premier Division. AFC Darwen were elected back
into the North West Counties League, Division One for season 2010–11. In the season of 2014/15 AFC Darwen were
promoted to the North West Premier Division by winning the NWCFL Division One play off final 5-3 against Hanley
Town in front of a crowd of 842 on 5 May 2015.

Our reserve side are in action tomorrow night away at Workington Town. The last time
they played Workington Town was back in September where they lost 2-1 in the first leg
of the cup. The second leg date is still to be decided.
On Saturday they will be at home to Colne who currently sit second in the league behind
Padiham. We are still yet to receive a match report or result from Saturday’s game.

LEST WE F RGET
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
It has been 101 years since the start of World War 1, and here at Squires Gate we have 3 members who do their
bit every year.
Albert Cooper, Spencer Leader and Bill White all help with the poppy appeal selling them in Lytham St Annes.
Why the poppy?
Scarlet corn poppies grow naturally in conditions of earth throughout Western Europe. The destruction brought
by the Napoleonlic wars of the early 1800s, transformed
bare land into fields of red poppies, growing around the
bodies of the fallen soldiers.
The Royal British Legion distribute poppies every year to
their poppy appeal and are a charity who provide finan-
cial, social and emotional support to those who have
served or who are currently serving in the British Armed
Forces.
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!

ECCLESTON & HESKIN 5 SQUIRES GATE 2
Mick Bishops side fell short of a 10 game win streak as they lost in the cup to Eccleston & He-
skin. After beating Thornton Cleveleys Blues 10-2 the previous weekend, the goals just did not
come for the under 13s.
They host Thornton Cleveleys Blues again this weekend looking to carry on their fantastic
league run where they have scored 49 goals in 8 games! They then travel to BJ Vipers, who
are currently 4th and 6 points behind them.

CHAMPIONS BUT RELEGATED?
HOW DOES THAT WORK? Stand Athletic finished the season as champions, however they were resigned to
the Manchester League at the end of the season. Their resignation meant that
Squires Gate would get promoted instead after finishing in 3rd place, missing out
on 2nd on goal difference despite scoring 103 goals, our defence leaked 60 goals.
In another twist of events Formby, who finished 5th, also resigned to the Liver-
pool County Football Combination (LCFC). Bootle, who finished 6th, were also re-
signed to the LCFC. What a confusing season.
Ashton Town, who are now in the Evo Stick finished 16th.
It proved to be a very tight finish down the bottom of the league as there was on-
ly 8 points separating the bottom 4 sides. Padiham, Colne and Chadderton were
all midtable with 50 points and Darwen finished 11th with 55 points.

GATE TOO GOOD FOR CONGLETON
On a very wet Tuesday in
Cheshire Squires Gate were
first to show when Mark Mul-
lan, raced down the Left and
brought saves from the home
keeper Mark Pearson, on a
heavy rain soaked pitch. Both
sides tried to play football but
the pitch cut up as the game
wore on. Gate opened the scoring when Mullan broke loose down the
left, slipped the ball through to Jack Sowerby who pushed it through
two defenders, where Billy McKenna, shot into the bottom left corner
for Gate’s first. Jack Sowerby brought a good save from the keeper to
touch over his header. Mullan was causing trouble for town with his
running, and it was one of these that brought Gate’s second. He shot
into the crowded goalmouth, and despite the effort being blocked, he
was first to the loose ball and beat the keeper in the closing mins of
the half.
Second half ball bobbling about killing skilful passing. The home side
fought to try to recover from the two goal deficit, but Gate defended
every attack, with Keeper Dave Rogerson, coming to the rescue, saving
with hands and feet, and diving at the feet of the Town attackers.
While the forwards tried to
push further ahead, with
Billy McKenna and Jack
Sowerby bringing the best
out of the home keeper,
and Samuel Hibbert, de-
fending well.
In Saturday’s programme, Matt
Harrison ‘lostboyos’ featured
in our match day programme
after his recent visit to Squires
Gate, on what was his 196th
ground.
On Friday night, he travelled to
Grimsby Town Football Club
for their match with Chelten-
ham Town to round off a mag-
nificent 2nd century - reaching
200.
Matt has wrote about every
ground he has visited on his
blog ‘lostboyos’, here is what
he had to say about his recent
visit:
“The whole groundhopping
thing was never planned - it
just sort of happened. If I went
back in time and told 21 year
old Matt Harrison that by the
time he was 27 he would be
about to watch football at his
200th football ground, I’m not
sure whether he’d be im-
pressed or embarrassed; I’m
not sure which one of the two
I feel now either to be honest.
So which famous, grand arena
would take the landmark mo-
ment of being my 200th
ground? Blundell Park.
This trip had been booked a
couple of months earlier when
I noticed that Grimsby’s game
versus Cheltenham was on a
Friday night and was featured
on TV, and it fell at the end of
my week off. I made a quick
pitch to my Athertonian friend
Gibbo and explained to him
that such a weekend would
mean that we could do two
games in one weekend in the
Grimsby area and within
minutes a hotel was booked.
I headed through the town
centre to see the delights of
Grimsby. I’d been told repeat-
edly by people on arriving in
Grimsby that I should brace
myself for the pungent smell
of fish, but I encountered no
overbearing smell at all and I
wondered whether the fishy
fragrance of Grimsby as a
myth. Somehow I ended up in
my second Wetherspoons in
the space of half an hour
which has to be some sort of
lostboyos record.
We set off to Blundell Park at
around 7pm, where we opted
to get the taxi to the ground.
This is where things get a bit
confusing - Grimsby Town is
actually located in Cleethorpes
and Cleethorpes Town can be
found in Grimsby. Sort it out
lads.
As soon as we turned the cor-
ner onto the road leading to
the turnstiles, I had fallen in
love with the place. It was in-
credible to think that this im-
pressive ground has now been
hosting non league football for
5 years; Grimsby should be in
the Football League.
Next to the ticket office we
found the club shop with and
with today being a landmark
occasion, I went in with the
intention of buying a Grimsby
Town scarf; I did not expect to
leave with a £10 inflatable
haddock.
As the game kick off, fireworks
began firing into the Clee-
thorpes night - this wasn’t any-
thing to do with the club
though, just some locals
wanting to get on BT Sports.
Whilst things went off with a
bang off the pitch, the game
was failing to explode into life.
Full time: Grimsby 0-1 Chelten-
ham Town.
