• The UK is the 6th largest manufacturer in the world (slightly behind France)

• The UK is the tenth largest exporter of manufactured goods in the world. It has a comparative advantage in high-technology sub sectors, with notable strengths in chemicals and medical, precision and optical instruments

• The UK has the 3rd highest level of foreign direct investment in the world with only the USA and China better

• Manufacturing contributed 15% of the total gross value added (GVA) of the UK economy in 2010, equating to £143bn. This makes it the second most valuable sector, after wholesale and retail trade. The relative contribution of manufacturing to the economy fell from 16% in 2001 to 12% in 2007

• In terms of employment, manufacturing is the fourth largest sector in the UK, employing ~2.5mn or ~10% of the entire UK workforce

• The largest manufacturing sub-sectors in the UK (in terms of GVA) are food & beverages, chemicals & pharmaceuticals and fabricated metal products

• Until Q4 2011, manufacturing was one of the few parts of the UK economy to see 2 years of uninterrupted growth. However, Q4 saw the sector contract by ~1%. But early results from Jan 2012 show a return to growth

• Since 1990, industrial (mostly manufacturing) electricity demand has remained fairly constant at ~100TWh. Its proportion of overall electricity demand has somewhat declined from 37% in 1990 to 32% in 2010
