DANNY
PENSWICK Good evening everyone,
We welcome Winsford tonight in what I'm hoping will be an entertaining game of football. I got ap-
pointed as manager just before our last meeting at the start of October where we were beaten 2-0. I
believe that we have come a long way since then, grinding out results and beating teams like 1874
Northwich. The team spirit is good in the squad. We are going into a tough set of fixtures over the
easter period, as we aim to finish as high as we can, picking up as many points as possible. The big
game for us will be AFC Blackpool on Easter Monday, where we host them for the first time this sea-
son.
“The big game for us will be AFC Blackpool on Easter Monday”
Onto today’s visitors, Winsford, and they will be buoyed by a last minute winner against Darwen on
Saturday and approach the game looking safe in mid table. They have proved they are a good foot-
balling side under Lee Duckworth but I feel that we have drastically improved since the last meeting to
go out there and match them on the pitch. Winsford have some quality players amongst their squad,
Kyle Riley, is one of them who knows how to score goals.
“They have proved they are a good footballing side”
With one defeat in our last 7 we’re becoming a tough team to beat, and coming from behind in our last
3 games shows we’re adding determination to our quality. I’ve been impressed with our performances
so far, and we show that we are capable of getting back on track to finish the season in a positive way.
I know it’s a big cliché but we are taking each game as it comes and can only focus on what is in front
of us. We are not safe yet, but have an advantage of 8 points over the bottom three.
“Coming from behind in our last 3 games shows we’re adding determination to our quality”
On Saturday I was pleased with the way we adapted mid game, and our desire win personal battles
was great to see. Let's hope we can take the game to Winsford and get another positive performance
from the boys. I would like to thank the Winsford fans and committee members for travelling here to-
day, and I hope you have a safe journey home.
Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD)
Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets
and played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club
where he’ll be looking to continue his fine form.
Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship)
Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence
on the pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.
Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship)
After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to
play on a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place
in the 2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd)
One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to
tell, consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous
occasions. A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of
Clubman of the Year 2014/15.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship)
A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a
linchpin of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent
success. A player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore)
Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays
and chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet,
or head do the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)
Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was bene-
ficial to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to
have the same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship)
Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the
pace to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team.
Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship)
Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny
Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the
squad.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship)
Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship of ex
manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable jobs in a
game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15 season but
he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship)
The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make the
right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can have a
big influence on games when in the mood.
Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship)
Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC Fylde
and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team mates
and is very good at holding the ball up.
Ashley Rowley (Sponsored by TravelCare World)
Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He
scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an impact
this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White)
Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the 2013/14
season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player. His game un-
derstanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship)
Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His work-
manlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals during last
season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player during this
season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship)
Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in
2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t
take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can also
play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a spot up
top and to fire Gate up the table.
Ryan Tanser (Available for sponsorship)
Ryan joined the club in October and came off the bench in the 5-2 defeat away at Atherton
Collieries. He scored his first goal for the club on his first full debut in our 5-1 win over
Maine Road in the MEN United cup. He will bring goals to the team for sure.

Coming into the game, Gate
made two changes to the
starting 11 with Mark Buchan
coming in for Mike Hall who was
unavailable due to injury. And
Jake Higham dropping to the
bench to replace Jamie Gibson
who was out through injury.
As expected the game started
very full blooded with 1874
Northwich coming out the blocks
early on full assault. Through the
first notable chance fell to Gate
10 minutes. A free kick fired into
Josh Westwood at the back post
but he headed the ball up rather
than at the goal more than
matching the visitors.
The real controversy of the first
half came in the 25th minute.
Greg Hall, the 1874 keeper, had
appeared to handle the ball out-
side his box only to be punished
with a yellow card.
Mark Buchan stepped up to
strike the resulting free kick but
that was cleared to Stayte who
put it out for a corner. 1874
showed how dangerous they can
be when Woolley, Beadle and
Brandon linked up, up top but
Woods was well behind Bran-
over the bar.
Billy McKenna could have opened
the scoring after good pressing from
Gate but his was over the bar. A
quick period of play from both
teams saw Tanser fire straight at the
keeper before Northwich went down
the other end and fired over the bar.
The combination of Buchan and
Tanser up top almost flourished like
against Alsager on Tuesday night but
Tanser shot narrowly wide from
Buchan’s lay off.
After the break Alex Mckendrick had
a great chance running in late at the
back post. By the just missed Mcken-
nas cross after good work between
him and Tanser. Rather harshly on
Gate, 1874 took the lead after 52
minutes. Gate had done so well up
until that point but Matthew Beadle
found space in between Trout and
Westwood to fire low between Josh
Woods legs.
The goal seemed to take the mo-
mentum away from Gate who were

But a header over the bar by Farnworth
summed up their missed opportunities.
Anthony Stayte had the chance to give
Gate the lead after 83 minutes after he
jinked through the 1874 midfield but
after exchanging passes with Mark
Buchan, Staytes shot was straight at
the keeper.
The visitors had their chances in what
was a very open game but lad luck
seemed to be on Gates side who
looked organised and stuck to a game
plan. Gates hard work would pay off in
the dying minutes of the game. Billy
Mckennna who had drifted inside from
the wing threaded the ball through the
middle of Northwichs defence to find
the run of Tanser. This time he didn't
panic and slotted the ball to the left of
Greg Hall in net for 1874 to win the
game for Squires Gate. There was late
drama in the game as 1874 Northwich
player Matt Woolley saw red for an
elbow on Stayte.

Squires Gate travelled to Congle-
ton on Saturday looking to con-
tinue there relegation battle with
another three points.
After Gates superb late win
against promotion chasing 1874
Northwich, they chose to make
just the one change with Jake
Higham coming back into the
starting 11 to replace Alex
Mckendrick who was unavaila-
ble.
Gate made a good start to the
game and had all the possession
in the opening five minutes. As
early as three minutes Gate had
their first chance but the Congle-
ton defender did well to Shepard
the ball out of play after Gate hit
the home side in numbers. The
home sides first chance came on
six minutes but striker Brian
Matthews fired wide of goal
after doing well to bring the ball
down.
First Nathan Trout then Joe
Noblet had chances for Gate but
neither could capitalise. Trout
sent the ball over the bar after
the corner fell to him and Noblet
half volleyed the ball from the
edge of the area but that hit a
Congleton defender and was
cleared. Gates couldn't capitalise
He picked out the home sides num-
ber 10 who's header found the
bottom corner to give The Bears the
lead.
Gate could have equalised ten
minutes after. Good link up play be-
tween Tanser, Buchan and McKenna
but Buchans low drive was well
saved to the keepers left. Again
McKenna was involved when he re-
ceived the ball from Buchans hold
up. But his cross was punched clear
by the keeper.
Gate had the last chance of the first
half after good work from the front
two again. But Tanser dragged his
shot wide of the post.
Gates first chance of the second half
came from a Freekick. Josh West-
wood with a great chance at the
back post but he just could stretch
far enough to reach the ball.
Gate made a great improvement in
the second half and Jake Higham
could have equalised. But his shot
was straight at the keeper.
Gate wouldn't have to wait long
after that to find the equaliser
though. Nathan Trout picking up the
ball in defence. He took a touch be-
fore clipping the ball towards the
path of Tanser. The striker bought
the ball down with class before
beating his man and firing low past
great chance to find both Tanser and
Buchan in the box on 74 minutes
After working hard to win the ball back,
he chose to shoot instead of crossing to
find the two waiting.
Gate could have won the game with sev-
eral late chances but couldn't capitalise
on good pressure. Gate will settle for the
point after being behind coming away
with a point at a tough ground like Con-
gleton is a bonus. Gate face another
though test on Tuesday night at home
against Winsford.

It was time for a fresh start and Chris Willcock and John Flanagan took over the team and the Blues led the table from early season right
up to the end when they were promoted to Division One as champions. Surprisingly Chris and John left at the end of the season and
moved to Woodley Sports, taking the best players with them.
Once again Winsford were on the lookout for a new Manager and this time they turned to the Liverpool area for Joe Gibiliru who had
managed St Helens Town in the First Division. Joe was faced with rebuilding the team and in spite of this he guided the team to a re-
spectable 12th place. Experienced players were brought in for the 2008-2009 season and this has had an immediate effect with several
good performances but it was not to last and the team fought a desperate battle against relegation.
A fresh start was made for the 2009-2010 season and once again Winsford turned to local talent with Terry Murphy as Manager and
Mike Alcock and Tony Ledwards as Assistant Managers. Unfortunately both Terry and Mike finished with health problems and Tony was
handed the Manager’s job.
It was still a struggle with a team of youngsters and Dave Twite returned to the hot seat and saved them from relegation, winning his
first six matches in charge.
However, with everything in place for a serious assault on the league title and over £20,000 spent on improving the facilities and pitch,
the club was rocked when two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to Mossley AFC as Joint
Manager and not only that, he expected to take sixteen registered players with him. This led to an acrimonious situation between the
two clubs with Mossley unable to register the players and Winsford refusing to allow their dual registration. Eventually an agreement
was reached on Winsford’s terms.

Squires Gate travelled to Winsford last March looking to continue their recent good form. Gates last game out resulted in
Victory for the Blackpool side. Two goals from Mark Buchan cancelling out the early opener from Sam Freakes. Gates oppo-
nents for the day, Winsford currently sit 6th in the form table with 3 wins, 2 draws and one defeat in the last 6 games. Gate
sat 10th having lost one more game than Winsford.
Gate made just the one change from Saturdays win with Josh Westwood coming back in at the back for the suspended Dan-
ny Penswick. It would be fair to say that the first half wasn't one of much quality. Both teams really struggled to play on
what was a poor surface. Squires Gate only really had the one chance in the first half and even that never looked like a clear
scoring opportunity. The long throw launched into the box was inches away from finding Mark Buchan but the Winsford
defender just nipped in ahead of Buchan to clear the ball. Winsford had several shot's throughout the first half but none
really tested Fletcher in net.
The second half was much of the same unfortunately. Gate had a few more half chances but never really looked like scor-
ing. Billy McKenna had the chance to open the scoring but after the ball was played across the face of the goal his shot was
blocked. Gates only other real chance of the second half came from Mark Buchan. From the free kick just outside of the box
he tried to catch the goal keeper out at his near post but the keeper got down well to save the goal bound shot.
Not the best day at the office for Gate but with a clean sheet and a solid performance from the returning Josh Westwood
there were positives to take from the game.
SQUIRES GATE 2 SATURDAY 18TH OCTOBER 2014
WINSFORD UNITED 2 15:00
Gate made three changes from Saturday’s draw, Mark Buchan dropped to the bench with Ryan Riley coming in, Alex
Colquhoun came in for Jack Cook and Hothersall came in for Jake Forshaw. It was a fairly even start to the game with both
games looking even in the opening 20. Gate's real first chance came when Chris Anderson played a clever ball down the line
to Jack Sowerby. Sowerby knocked the ball back to the on-rushing Harry Dunn but his shot was saved well and Gate couldn't
capitalise from the corner. Gate could have had a penalty on the 35th minute, the ball swung in the penalty area was
punched by Winsford's keeper who seemed to get more of Josh Westwood's head than the ball but the ref awarded a free
kick to Winsford. Gate opened the scoring on the 44th minute Jack Sowerby picking the ball up on the edge of the area after
a loose pass from the Winsford goalkeeper, after beating two defenders Sowerby slot the ball into the back of the net with
great confidence.
Into the second half and it didn't take Gate long to double their lead. Straight from kick off Harry Dunn attacked into Wins-
ford half and passed the ball to Sowerby, he managed to control the ball in the box and side foot the ball to score his and
Gates second goal. It would be fair to say that between the 44th minute and the 48th minute were the most entertaining of
the game. As Winsford took the kick off after Sowerby's second of the game they managed to get themselves back into the
game. The long ball up to the Winsford winger who nodded down for Ryan Mathews to get one back on the 47th minute for
Squires Gate kicked off a new era at The Royal British Legion Stadium as Danny Penswick took charge of his first game.
Penswick took the reigns after the club parted company with Dave McCann. Penswick chose to recall Stephen Higgins after
he served his ban and Mckendrick after his injury. Gate started the half on fire and could have scored after 3 minutes. Pens-
wick fired the freekick into the box but couldn’t find a Gate man. From the goal kick Winsford went down the other end and
had a chance of their own. But Ben Fletcher came to Gates rescue to deny Winsford after the attacker found space. Alex
Colquhoun had the chance to open the scoring from the corner but his shot floated over the bar. The game was controlled
by Gate throughout the first half with the home side seeing more of the ball and having the best of the chances. Winsford
opened the scoring against the run of play after 16 minutes. The striker reading the flick on which beat Colquhoun found
the run of his teammate to score. Gate had a shout for a penalty turned down on 25 minutes a good burst into the box from
Mckendrick the defender seemed to handball the ball but the ref waved away Gate’s claims. Gate were unlucky to go into
half time one goal down but couldn’t convert there chances.
The second half featured many chances again for Gate but the Blackpool side struggled to capitalise on their dominance.
Ash Rowley had the chance to grab a goal back for Gate on 50 minutes from just inside the box. A good run from McKenna
found Rowley who spun his man but his shot was saved. Rowley was involved again 5 minutes later when he found Alex
Mckendrick on the edge of the box but he chose to cut the ball back to the edge of the box instead of across the face of
goal and the ball was cleared. Billy McKenna was next to attack the Winsford back line and showed good skill to get past his
man but his cross into the box couldn’t find any of the 3 Gate attackers waiting. Ryan Riley had a chance to put Gate level

MY STARTING XI:
WHO WILL BE KEY?
Without a doubt, we will need Joe Hart to be on top form. I know as a keeper how much pressure he
will have to deal with. He’s definitely the best keeper I’ve seen in an England shirt for a long time. Let’s
just hope he’s been practicing saving penalties, just in case.
It’ll be interesting to see how Harry Kane deals with the pressure on him to score. He’s proved himself
in the Premier League, and has a natural instinct to shoot when facing goal. He’s not got a bad header
on him either.
England have been calling out for a creative midfielder for a long time, and even more so since Gerrard
retired. Ross Barkley can fill that role and has a rocket of a strike on him as well.
HOW FAR WILL WE GO?
You never know what to expect with England, but I think we have a good chance this year. We have a
good young squad mixed with experience. I’m going to say quarter finals, I think we have a relatively
easy group but I think it will be typical England to get knocked out on penalties.

Ahead of tonights game, we spoke to Winsford fan Joe Duckworth about how he thinks Winsford have copd
this season, which teams have impressed him and which 3 PL players he would sign for Winsford.
How would you sum up your performances this season? What has been your best result so far,
and where are you hoping to finish?
Even though we lost at Barnton, Lee Duckworth’s first game in charge was our best performance,
we were very unfortunate to lose. In terms of position I would be very happy with top 12. Unfor-
tunately we couldn’t beat local rivals 1874 a few weeks back though.
What teams have impressed you this season? Who do you think has been the best team you have
played?
Colne impressed along with 1874 Northwich but I think Colne were the better side and will win
the league. Their manager Steve Cunningham has a great side there, and they have 3 games in
hand on Linnets.
What do you think has been the best result?
Our best result was our 2-0 victory here in the FA
Vase back in October, we were very good that day
and kept a clean sheet. What else could you ask for?
Within your time watching Winsford, what has been
your most memorable game and moment?
When they won the league, and my older brother, Lee
who is now player/manager scored a great freekick
which turned out to be the winner.
What is the best goal you have ever seen, at any level in football?
Stevie Gerrard’s goal against West Ham in the FA Cup final to take us to extra time. Not many
players could hit a ball like he did.
What would be your dream scenario at Wembley?
I will be going to Wembley if Winsford or Liverpool get there. My dream scenario would be Liver-
pool against Winsford with a Winsford win. Wouldn’t it be great!
After beating Squires Gate back at the start of October, both sides are
now settled under new management. Do you think that will change the
result today?
I would expect it to be a tough game and with both sides under new
management, it will definitely change the game with them both
wanting different things to their predecessors.
If you could pick 3 PL players to join Winsford United on a free. Who would they be?
As a Liverpool fan, I’ll have to pick Christian Benteke, Jamie Vardy and Phillipe Coutinho. They all
give 100% every game and could you imagine them three against defenders in this league? Lethal!
Which Winsford players should Gate fans watch out for today?

John Maguire We spoke to Gate secretary John Maguire and asked him about his time at Squires Gate. John has been at the club since he was 15 and
has gone from the junior team to secretary of the club. Here is what he had to say;
What encouraged you to get involved in non league, and Squires Gate?
I joined Squires Gate as a 15 year old, and started playing junior football (nearly 10 years ago now!!). Years have gone on and I’ve
played for the first team, captained the first team, I’ve been manager and now I’m secretary. I’ve had some great years at Squires Gate
and I’ve enjoyed every season. It is a great club to be a part of.
Within your time at Squires Gate, what has been your most memorable moment and game?
There has been many memorable games that I have both managed and played in. The most memorable game was the 2-1 victory over
Ashton Athletic which meant we stayed in the Premier Division and avoided relegation. That day was so special for Gate supporters.
The most memorable moment was captaining us to the Richardson Cup final victory back in 1987.
If Gate were to stay up this season, what would you say the aim would be for next season?
Next season it would be great to build on what has been achieved so far this season. Penswick has done a superb job so far so it will
be interesting to see what he can bring to the team next campaign.
Who has been the best opposition that you have seen at Squires Gate within your time here?
Best team we've played this season was Colne, solid defensively and plenty of attacking options who can bring goals to the team, but I
think Linnets will pip them to the title.
What would be your dream achievement to reach with Squires Gate? (Football League? Win the FA Cup?)
It would be great to have a good cup run in the FA Cup or Vase and finish in the top half of the league. A trip to a football league club
in the first round of the cup would be a great achievement.
What has been the best goal that you have seen at non league level?
Some of the best goals I have seen have been scored by Jack Sowerby, none better than the one 2 years ago at Ashton that kept us up.
Do you have any favourite grounds to visit in the NWCFL and in non league?
I have no particular favourite ground. Any ground where we keep a clean sheet will do for me!
Prediction for tonight?
I’m going to say a Gate win.
Nathan McKie What has been the best game you have watched this season? On the other hand, what has been the worst game you have watched
this season?
The best game I’ve watched this season was Runcorn Linnets vs AFC Liverpool, a well fought competition with some good football
which finished 2-1.
The worst game I’ve watched was Runcorn Town vs Silsden.
Do you have any favourite non league grounds? What do you enjoy the most about non league?
I do enjoy visiting Runcorn Linnets and Ashton Athletic. The cheap admission prices are the best part about non league football.
Have you ever witnessed any memorable moments in non league? (Play off wins, league wins, etc)?
2 seasons ago I watched a very close play off final game between Warrington Town and Bamber Bridge which finished 1-0.
WHO’S IN CHARGE?
Tony Sullivan
LAST SEASON
SQUIRES GATE 2
CAMMELL LAIRD 2
Gate made a great start to the game and took the lead after 2 minutes of the first half.
The ball was sent forward to Josh Westwood who's flick on found the run of Terry Cum-
mings he controlled the ball and in a swift motion fired the ball to put Gate into an early
lead.
Gate were back on the attack again shortly after taking the lead with Josh Kay on the left
but his through ball was cut out before it could reach Josh Westwood. Lairds had their
first chance after 20 minutes but star striker Craig Cairns saw his chipped shot fall the
wrong side of the post. Gate had the chance to double their lead through first Josh Kay
then Alex Mckendrick but the ball was scrambled away for a corner.
What followed was a good spell of play from Lairds.
The visitors could have equalised through Gibiliru but his shot was saved well by Fletch-
er for Gate. The visitors would find the equaliser 2 minutes before half time, the free
kick given away by Richards in the far corner led to the ball being crossed into the back
post from the free kick and Ferrigan making it all level. Lairds didn't hang around and
with one of the last kicks of the first half they took the lead. Gibiliru finding space in the
box to extend Lairds lead into the break.
Gate again made a good start to the half just as they did in the first and after 3 minutes
made the game level. Good work by Josh Kay on the left to beat his man before chipping
over the onrushing keeper which seemed to take an age to drop to level the game.
Lairds had the chance to counter 20 minutes into the second half but good work from
Richards and Benjamin cut out the danger. What followed was a battle in the middle of
the pitch with both midfields seeing alot of the ball both trying to create something for
either team.
Sub Ash Rowley had a good run down the left beating his marker but his shot was well
saved by the keeper as Gate pilled on the pressure. Lairds best chance of the closing
stages of the game came late on but Wes Benjamin was in the right place at the right
time to clear the ball off the line.
