Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road, this Vodkat League, Premier Division contest against Runcorn Linnets. Let me open by welcoming the Players, Management, Committee and Supporters of Runcorn to St Helens. I hope they enjoy the hospitality they will be afforded this afternoon. It has been a frustrating ten days since we last played here at Knowsley Road and indeed last played a competitive game. We were soundly beaten on that occasion by a Glossop North End team who played some excellent football which was wonderful to watch and in my opinion they are the best side we have played so far this season. The frustration at a blank Tuesday last week and a waterlogged pitch at Atherton LR on Saturday will mean that the players should be raring to go and make amends for the previous two reverses where we have been on the end of five goals on both occasions. This evening’s visitors were also frustrated on Saturday as they too were denied by a waterlogged pitch. That came on the back of a resounding 4-0 home victory over Congleton Town in the Cheshire Senior Cup. The Linnets reward for this success is an “away” tie at Wincham Park against landlords Witton Albion. The visitors have been in better form of late after having an up and down spell at the start of last month including Town recording a 2-1 success at Wincham Park after going a goal down early on when Town old boy Rob Whyte netted a spot kick. Sunday saw a mixed squad of first and reserve team players take part in the Bert Trautmann Trophy game at the Regional Athletics Arena in the shadow of the City of Manchester Stadium and an entertaining match saw Town run out 6-5 winners to claim the Trophy. Please note that due to New Mills advancing to the 2nd Round of the FA Vase on Saturday, Town will not now have a game this coming Saturday. The reserves are in John Gregson Memorial Cup action at Bobbies Lane kick off 2.15pm, if you fancy taking in a game. Chairman’s Notes . . . Good evening and a very warm welcome to Knowsley Road for this Vodkat League Premier Division encounter with our friends and rivals Runcorn Linnets FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters, along with today’s match officials and our own home support have had a pleasant journey and enjoy our hospitality during their short stay as well as an entertaining encounter! It’s been over a week since our last competitive fixture when we were blown away by a very good Glossop North End outfit. Their 1-5 win at Knowsley Road, with Town ‘man-of-the-match’ Mike Fargher hitting Town’s late consolation goal, ended a miserable week for Gary Bickerstaffe’s team following the 5-0 reverse to Main Road a few days earlier and he and the lads will be hoping for a better performance this evening. Last Saturday’s trip to Atherton LR fell foul of the poor weather as did the Reserves’ encounter at Old Xaverians! We weren’t denied some football last weekend as the bright sunshine returned on Sunday afternoon as the club took part in the Bert Trautmann Trophy at the Regional Athletics

Stadium, adjacent to the City of Manchester Stadium. While the crowd was a little disappointing the lads and those present had a fantastic afternoon with Peter Barnes, Neil Pointon, Kenny Clements, Andy Dibble, Ian and David Brightwell among a plethora of City Legends on show to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Bert’s transfer from Town to City in October 1949. Whilst the touch and skill was still evident among the City stars, age and fitness did eventually tell and Town edged out their opponents 6-5 in a very entertaining game with some great goals; Jamie Foster hitting a superb winner in the last minute of the game. There were some strange goings-in during the second

half which saw the match re-start without the referee or his assistants, City with twelve men on the pitch as Andy Dibble ventured ‘up-front’ which was followed by a number of Town players donning the sky blue of City - brilliant stuff!! Sky Sports commentator John Gwynne did a great job in keeping the fans abreast of goal-scorers, substitutions, etc. All players received a commemorative medal and Town captain on the day Dougie Pitts held aloft the ‘Bert Trautmann Trophy’, presented to him by guest of honour Steve Fleet who was Bert’s understudy at City for much of his career. Tonight’s game will be another tough encounter as our visitors have been on a good run since we defeated them 2-1 at Wincham Park at the beginning of last month. Let’s hope the lads can get back to winning ways and a solid performance.

Finally, it was good to see stalwart committee member and club Director, Gordon McDonald,

make the game on Sunday after illness - he’s still undergoing a lengthy recovery process and

we wish him well. Enjoy the game and hopefully three points for Town and join us in the Black

Bull after the full time whistle.

In Town Today . . . Runcorn A.F.C. was founded in 1918 when a local tannery owner and benefactor

acquired the Canal Street Ground and the Club became one of the many activities

of the Highfield and Camden Tanneries Recreation Club. The Club continued to be

run under the umbrella of the tanneries until the formation of a limited company – Runcorn Association Football Club Limited – in 1953. In its first season, the club

became members of the Lancashire Combination and success was immediate as

they won the Lancashire Junior Cup beating Blackpool RAMC in a replay at Anfield.

The following season, Runcorn were one of the founder clubs of the Cheshire

County League and were its first champions. Championship glory returned to

Runcorn in 1936/37, with the Linnets also winning the League Cup to complete the double.

The following season they finished as league runners-up, but won the Cheshire Bowl. The final

was against Tranmere Rovers who lost a thrilling match at Canal Street 5-4. The Linnets regained

the title in 1938/39 in a season where FA Cup glory first came to Canal Street, with the team

claiming their first league scalp as they defeated the then Third Division Champions Aldershot in

the Second Round. In the following round, Runcorn got the dream tie against the Cup holders

Preston North End, and in front of a club record crowd of 10,111, the Linnets went down 4-2, with

Preston getting two late goals. After also winning the wartime league in 1939 and 1940, this highly rated Runcorn team was broken up as the Second World War escalated and the league

programme was suspended. When the Cheshire League resumed, Runcorn were no longer the

same force, with the Linnets finishing ninth in 1945/46. Fans had to wait until the 60's for their

next successes, with Runcorn lifting the league title in 1962/63 and taking their second league

scalp in the FA Cup as they beat Notts County (1967/68). The 60’s were also a glory period in the

Cheshire Senior Cup, with Runcorn lifting the trophy on two occasions to add to previous wins in

1924/25 and 1935/36.

In 1968/69, Runcorn left the Cheshire League to become founder members of the Northern

Premier League, and won the Cheshire Senior Cup again in 1973/74. The following year, they

retained the Senior Cup and added the NPL Cup, as the team became one of the strongest in the

league. The season after - 1975/76 - the club won their first NPL league title, and took their third

league scalp - Southport - in 1977/78, with the NPL Cup won again in 1979/80. In this season, the Alliance Premier League (now Nationwide Conference) was formed, with Runcorn surprisingly left

out. The team though put this behind them and did the treble in 1980/81, lifting the NPL

Championship, NPL Cup and the NPL Shield, achieving promotion to the top flight of non-league

football.

After promotion, Runcorn continued their form and shocked the non-league world by winning the

APL Championship at the first attempt by a seven-point margin, losing just five games. Runcorn also won the League Cup - known as the Bob Lord Trophy - on two occasions in 1982/83 and

1984/85, and were runners up in 1991/92. In the first ten years of APL football, Runcorn finished

in the top eight on nine occasions. The "Conference Years" were also Runcorn's most successful

periods in the FA Cup and FA Trophy. In their fifteen years of tenure, Runcorn reached the First

Round six times and the Second Round four times. They also defeated two league sides in this

time - Chester (1987/88) and Wrexham (1988/89). In the FA Trophy, Runcorn went one better

than their three Semi-Final appearances in the 70's by reaching the Final at Wembley in 1986. Unfortunately though local rivals Altrincham defeated them 1-0. Since then the Linnets have

reached two more FA Trophy finals at Wembley, going down to Wycombe Wanderers (4-1) in

1993 and Woking (2-1) in 1994. Runcorn were also very successful in the Senior Cup, winning it

for five consecutive years in from 1984/85 to 1988/89. Despite their success on the field, disaster

struck three times off the field during the 1993/94 season. A perimeter wall collapsed in a FA Cup

tie against Hull, the roof blew off a stand in high winds, and the main stand was gutted by fire.

With the club crippled by the cost of rebuilding their Canal Street home, Runcorn suffered on the

pitch, and were relegated for the first time in their history in 1995/96 after fifteen years of top-

flight non-league football.



In Town Today . . . Back in the Northern Premier League - now the Unibond League - Runcorn aimed to bounce

back to the Conference as soon possible, but despite Presidents Cup success in 1997/98, the

Linnets never achieve their goal. In 1999/2000 with crowds dwindling, Runcorn sold their Canal

Street home to move into the 11,000 capacity Halton Stadium in nearby Widnes. The club also changed their name to Runcorn FC Halton to reflect the borough in which they were to play.

In the 2003/04 season, the Conference announced the formation of Conference North and

South for following season and Runcorn qualifying by finishing the season in 13th - the final

automatic spot. The following two seasons saw relegations into UniBond Premier and UniBond

First following financial difficulties, although the spot in UniBond First was never taken up as the

club became dormant after the creation of Runcorn Linnets FC by the fans of the old club.

Runcorn Linnets Football Club was born on 28 April 2006, when the fans of Runcorn Football

Club, dismayed at the club’s predicament, met at their spiritual home at the Quayside in Canal

Street in Runcorn and voted to establish a new club which would continue the proud tradition of

non-League football which had existed in the town since 1918. A large group of fans formed an

interim committee to set the wheels in motion. A Supporters Trust already existed and this was

the vehicle through which the new club would be run. At this early stage, the club existed in name only, and the choice of the name Runcorn Linnets was symbolic in representing where the

fans had come from and in keeping those ties with our past, whilst at the same time recognising

that a new club needed to be built to re-establish confidence in the local community.

To start a new club from scratch with only 4 months to the start of a new season was a

mammoth task, and the newly formed committee drew up business and action plans to attempt

to achieve their objectives. Negotiations were opened on many fronts, with the FA, the Cheshire FA, the North West Counties League, Supporters Direct and Witton Albion Football Club. We

received a vast amount of advice and support from all of these bodies and were hugely grateful

to them all for their help. The Chairman and Board of Directors at Witton Albion FC extended

the hand of friendship and offered us a ground share for the season, as no suitable venue was

immediately available back in Runcorn. This we were delighted to accept. A Roll of Honour was

established on our website in recognition of the support offered to us by fans and friends in those early days. We were supported by our local council and MPs in our bid for a place in the

league for the start of season 2006/07. The members of the committee worked tirelessly to

achieve our objective and we were delighted when we were finally accepted into the league by

the member clubs on Saturday 17 June 2006 at the AGM in Buxton. It was a proud day for all of

us and we were grateful to be given the opportunity to re-build a non-League club representing

Runcorn and with the firm aim of moving the club back to its roots at the earliest opportunity.

Former manager and player for Runcorn FC Halton, Steve Carragher agreed to join as manager. Steve has vast non-League experience and the club were delighted that he lead the team in this

new venture. The old Runcorn FC started life back in the Cheshire League, so it was perhaps

fitting that we had this chance to re-build in the League that was formed from an amalgamation

of that league and the Lancashire Combination. The club enjoyed it’s first season immensely

and achieved promotion in its first season. Runcorn finished second to Winsford on goal

difference.

The 2007/8 season saw the club play in the FA Vase for the first time but exited at the hands of

Salford City. At the beginning of 2008, the club parted with its management team by mutual

consent and Steve Wilkes was appointed manager, with goalkeeper Robbie Holcroft as his

assistant. The club finished the season in 12th position. Last term saw the club progress by

playing their first FA Cup tie at Rossington Main. They also reached their first Cup final losing 2-

0 to New Mills in the League Cup Final.

In June 2009 news broke that plans for a new ground had received the support of the Halton

Borough Council. The original plans had been to play at the Riverside College, but with the help

of the council, the plan is to develop a site at the Halton Sports complex within the town, and

the club plans to be back playing in the town for the start of the 2010/11 season.

Vodkat League News NEW MILLS ORDERED TO REPLAY FA VASE TIE New Mills have been ordered to replay their FA Vase First Round tie away at Bourne Town this coming Saturday, 14th November The decision was made at an FA hearing today (Tuesday 10th November) after it emerged that New Mills had fielded Mark Cadwallader in the original tie, while he was on loan. After the hearing the FA issued the following statement:

The FA Carlsberg Vase; First Round Proper; Saturday 3 October 2009 An FA Vase Sub Committee Meeting was held on Tuesday 10 November 2009 to investigate the inclusion of Mark Cadwallader, for New Mills, in the above tie and after considering all of the facts, the Sub Committee decided that New Mills were guilty, by their own admission, of breaching FA Vase Rule 15(h)(i) by playing a loan player, therefore ineligible. The Sub Committee decided, in accordance with its discretionary powers and due to extenuating circumstances, that the tie is ordered to be replayed to a conclusion at Bourne Town on Saturday 14 November 2009, with a kick-off 3.00pm. In addition, only those players that were eligible to play at 12 noon on Friday 2 October 2009 shall be permitted to participate in this tie. No fine was imposed, as the decision to replay the tie was deemed sufficient punishment. The Second Round Proper tie, New Mills v Tividale, due to be played this Saturday is now cancelled and a date for the Second RoundProper tie, Bourne Town or New Mills v Tividale, will be advised in due course.

New Mills Secretary Duncan Hibbert says everyone at the club is happy to accept the FA's ruling. Duncan said: "Our Chairman Ray Coverley, Vice-Chairman Andy Bowers and Media Officer Neil Rigby all travelled to London to represent the club. They have stated that we were given a fair hearing, and we are pleased that common sense has prevailed. "We were under the impression that Mark was eligible to play in the game, but having been made aware that was not the case, we are happy to accept the FA ruling and are relieved that the whole episode is now behind us as it's been an extremely busy and fraught few days. "Everyone is now focussing on Saturday's game and our return trip to face Bourne Town." New Mills won through to Round 2, 5-4 on penalties recovering from a 2-0 deficit.

Town History St. Helens Town AFC – A Brief History Formed in 1946, by a group of local businessmen, fronted by George Fryer, St. Helens Town obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line. Having played a number of friendly matches, the team entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1946/47 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn

were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division.

Improvements were made quickly to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but the tenure of the ground became uncertain between 1951 and 1953

and several matches were played at the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road resulting in some encouraging crowds: indeed, a permanent move to City Road was mooted in 1953, before the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October of that year. The ground was subsequently purchased and developed and a social club and floodlights were added in more recent years. Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. A win over Darwen also secured the Bass Charrington Cup. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town are the only club to feature in the top division of that league throughout its existence. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and



Town History Brian Rigby. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, perhaps none more so than 2008/09, with the club in the relegation positions until the end of March, when Gary Bickerstaffe was appointed the new manager and the team rallied to win six of the last eight games, including 3-1 victories at Squires Gate, Colne and the Wembley-bound Glossop North End, before Runcorn Linnets were blitzed 5-0 in the final game. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for Manchester City 60 years ago this season and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final,

despite breaking his neck in the early stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. There is a real spirit of optimism at Knowsley Road these days and, under the guidance of Gary Bickerstaffe’s ambitious management team and with a new reserve side entered in the Liverpool County League, the club is looking forward with justifiable hope for a successful future. Kevin Woods; Young Goalkeeper who has took up the number one mantle after Andy Lynskey broke his ankle last term. He

retained the shirt for the majority of the season and put in some solid displays including several clean sheets. Neil Jones; Commanding Centre Half who now in his fifth season at the heart of the Town defence. Strong in the air and on the ground and has been know to bully a few experienced strikers. Always likely to pop up with a goal or two especially at set-pieces. Chris Burke; Rejoined the club last summer after leaving to join Prescot Cables. He has played higher up the pyramid with Hucknall Town & Northwich Victoria. A solid defender who reads the game well and stopped many an opposition attack last term. John Elias; Strong centre half who returned to the club last season for a second spell. A tough tackling and no nonsense defender who always gives 100% in every game. His attitude on the park is much improved from his previous spell. Paul Monteith; Now in his second season at the club, “Monty” was involved during most of last season but will be looking to make more starts this term his is not afraid to put his foot in. Netted his first goal for the club against East Villa in the Liverpool Senior Cup. Previously at Flixton and Ashton Town. Iain Dyson; Town Skipper and the heartbeat of the team, a great motivator and leader on the pitch who battled at the heart of midfield and also up front during the last couple of seasons. Was the clubs top goalscorer last term for the second time in three seasons. Can count Everton, Bolton, Rochdale, Chorley, Winsford and Warrington amongst his former clubs. Graeme Mitchell; Joined Town from Warrington last summer for a second spell after being here previously under the stewardship of Jim McBride and John Davison. Centre forward who scored plenty during his time in the UniBond had a spell with Bamber Bridge at the turn of the year. Phil Mitchell; Brother of Graeme followed a similar path. He can play on either wing or just behind the front man. Another who made a great impact last term and finished the season as 2nd top goalscorer. Brian Hatton; The oldest member of the squad but still has bags of energy and enthusiasm. His legs may not be as fast at they used to be but his brain still works at optimum speed and he has a great eye for a pass and his fine crossing can cause



Town Pen Pictures havoc in opposition penalty areas. Brian was almost ever present last season only missing the final match after picking up a nasty injury at Runcorn. Former Stockport & Bolton player who has had more clubs than plenty of golfers! Adam Gilchrist; Speedy winger who caused problems for many a defender last term. He played in many various positions during last term including right back, right midfield and centre midfield.

Marc Stephens; Young midfield who had a fine start to life at Town. Signed last summer he came into his own when moved into central midfield and linked up well with Karl Ledsham during the final stages of the last term. Ian Frazer; Midfield player who joined the club this season. After some early substitute appearances he’s now become a regular with some confident performances. A player who reads the game very well and who’s good on the ball with excellent passing skills. Rob Hanley; Striker who has joined the club in the off season from Greenall Padgate St Oswald where he was top scorer in the Cheshire League last term having netted 30 goals. He has pace, power and a great drive and looks dangerous every time he gets the ball. Mark Evans; Left sided player who is equally at home at full back or on the left of midfield. Rejoined the club in the close season after a spells with Congleton Town, Atherton LR & Wigan Robin Park. Stephen “Ben” Kay; Another close season signing from Wigan Robin Park. The centre back has proved to be a quality addition as he reads the game well and is good both in the air and on the ground. Mike Faragher; Young midfielder acquired from local football who possess pace and no little ability. Likes to take on defender and beat them before sending quality crosses into the box. Dougie Pitts; Vastly experience defender who joined in the summer from Wigan Robin Park. He marshals the back line well and is an excellent header of the ball. A regular in the team after missing the opening few games of the season while holidaying in the southern hemisphere. Nick McLoughlin; Left sided defender equally at home pushing into midfield. He has the ability to deliver an excellent cross and having been a regular last season he will be pushing to retain that place after a solid start to the 2009-10 season. Peter Birch; Young defender recently signed from Unibond outfit Burscough. Peter possess good pace and agility. His height gives him a distinct advantage both in defence and at attacking set pieces.

More action from Sunday’s Bert Trautmann Trophy fixture



Good evening and welcome to Knowsley Road for this evenings Vodkat North West

Counties League Premier Division match against Runcorn Linnets. May the

travelling fans enjoy the match but not the result.

Well the hope for an upturn in performance after the Maine Road defeat didn’t

happen and when we were all last gathered here for the Glossop North End, it was

another test of the fans endurance as the Derbyshire outfit ran riot to a 1-5

victory. After Glossop went 0-5 up in the match, I decided that was enough for me

and I left the ground. I paid the price for this desertion though when the only goal

of the game I missed was the one Town scored. I’m informed it was a Michael

Fargher header from a corner that gave Town the consolation. This was the last

league game that Town have played prior to tonight with last weekend’s fixture

against Atherton LR falling foul of the weather.

But Town were still involved in action on the

weekend when on Sunday they travelled to the

Regional Athletics Stadium in Manchester to take

on a Manchester City Legends side for the Bert

Trautmann Trophy. A fun day was had by most

in the match played in exhibition style where

some great goals, humorous PA announcing

from Sky Sports John Gwynne and a last gasp

winner from Jamie Foster saw Town successful in

lifting the trophy with a 6-5 scoreline. A modest

crowd of 350 after the publicity the match had,

will have raised some money for some very

worthwhile charities and it was a very good

occasion to be a part of.

To tonight though and the slightly more serious

business of the league campaign which is quickly

starting to go downhill. This evening the

Runcorn Linnets visit Knowsley Road after Town’s successful trip there earlier in

the season saw them 2-1 victors. That was when things were going swimmingly

though, at the moment the club seems to have hit a rocky patch and with Runcorn

being in some good form themselves, Town will have to show a vastly improved

performance if they are to get anything out of this match. Since the two last met,

Runcorn captain Steve Cunningham has left the club and moved to Lancashire side

Colne, so hopefully there will be no fall-out from the fractious end to our previous

meeting and the game will remain accusation free.

Once again its time for St Helens Town football under the Knowsley Road lights,

lets be loud and proud and hopefully cheer the boys on to a victory that will turn

the league campaign around. Stand tall and play proud boys, we’re right behind

you.

Vodkat League News NEW NON-LEAGUE HISTORY WEBSITE

A Wakefield based non-league football enthusiast has set up a website

that will be of interest to many followers of our league. Roger

Hopkin's interest in the non-league game in the North of England has

led him to accumulate a host of facts, figures and statistics over the

years, which are now available for everyone to view at

www.nonleaguematters.net. He first began planning the site several

years ago, although as he explained, his interest in the non-league

game dates back much further.

"I first began watching non-league football back in the 1950s, when my father

introduced me to it by taking me to watch Scarborough. That association led to a

general interest in the non-league game that has remained ever since. I've

always been fascinated by the wider aspects of the game at that level, and the

history of the clubs involved, and through that I've built up a host of books and

records over the years.

"I took early retirement a few years ago, and with time on my hands I decided I

was in a position to put my time to good use, get the information sorted out and

on the internet, and share it with like-minded people."

That work culminated in the new website going live in July, and since then Roger

has been adding material on league formation, final tables and changes/

movements across the years for a number of leagues across the North of

England. There are some areas of the site that will be of particular interest to

followers of our league clubs.

"I have just finished completing work on sections relating to the Cheshire County

League and the Lancashire Combination, from the time these were set up until

1982 when the North West Counties League began. I have also covered the first

few seasons of the latter up to the mid-1990s. I've got a basic plan of what I'd

like to do once all the league tables and changes/movements are covered, which

I'll be able to tell everyone about in due course."

Roger is also keen to hear from any club officials and historians who are willing to

share information on their club with him. "Some clubs have fascinating histories,

and it would be nice to build up a profile on all the clubs who are featured

throughout the site. If anyone wants to get in touch I'd be delighted to hear from

them."

But the most important thing to Roger is that fellow non-league fanatics will

benefit from the work he has put in on the site.

"Visitors are welcome to use the information as they wish. It would be nice if

people credited the source of any information they might use, but if everyone who

visits the site gets something out of it, I'll be pleased about that." Roger can be

St Helens Town Juniors . . . The future’s bright for Town

Established just three years ago, and now an FA Charter Standard Club, the ‘Town Juniors’ has grown into one of the largest junior outfits in the region. With over 300 local players and nineteen teams the club provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 to 16 years. To date the club has been extremely successful both on and off the field, winning a plethora of cups and league titles across all age groups and has recently seen Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Crewe offer contracts to a number of its players.

The junior section has formed a community partnership with Premiership giants Liverpool FC, enabling the club to access a range of education resources as well as coaching sessions for young players in St. Helens and at the LFC Academy. In addition, all junior coaches are invited to events at the LFC Academy aimed at expanding their knowledge of the game and coaching skills. Steve Leather spokesman for the ‘Juniors’ said, ‘We are here to provide an excellent standard of coaching and football for local youngsters: with our long term ambition to provide a wealth of talent to the club’s First Team.’ The Town Juniors’ major aim for this season is to develop the Girls’ team under the guidance of recently appointed ‘Head of Girls’ Football’, Katie Chedotal. Match Report Saturday 7th November; Vodkat League Premier Division; St Helens Town 1-5 Glossop North End A poor week was rounded off for Town with an emphatic defeat at Knowsley Road against Glossop North End. Similar to Tuesday’s encounter Town went behind early in the action when Darren Hamilton latched onto a through ball, the Town backline stopped and appealed for offside but to no avail as Mark Evans played the striker onside and he made no mistake slotting home into the bottom right hand corner from 25 yards out. It was 2-0 on 14 minutes when Alex Elliott latched onto a poor pass from John Elias across the edge of the Town box and he curled his central effort into the top right hand corner of the net. Evans played a good ball from the left into the box from the left which broke to Graeme Mitchell his strike looked to be arrowing home but struck a defender and went behind for a corner. Hamilton netted his second and the visitors third on 24 minutes when he latched onto a through ball beat Stephen Kay to the ball and lofted an effort over the advancing keeper into the net. A Phil Mitchell corner from the left just after the half hour saw Dougie Pitts find space but he could only send his effort wide of the left hand upright. Moments later it was 4-0 as Town’s awful defensive display continued. Hamilton beat Evans on the left and the offside trap with Elias deeper than the rest of the back four, the striker squared to Adam Oakes who had the simple task of tapping home. Town manager Gary Bickerstaffe clearly unhappy with the first half display made a triple substitution but Glossop were still in the ascendancy and struck again five minutes after the restart, Hamilton completing his hat-trick after good work by Sam Hind. Just after the hour Phil Mitchell linked with Marc Stephens who unleashed a shot from the edge of the box which struck the left hand upright and went behind with Matt Cooper in the Glossop goal beaten. Town managed to gain a modicum of consolation in the final minute of the normal time when Mike Fargher headed a Mike Scully corner from the right home but in the final reckoning St Helens Town were beaten by what was the best team they have played this season and know they will need to improve vastly over the next couple of weeks or the slide down the table will continue. Peter Maude It was with great sadness that the UniBond League learned of the passing this week of

Board Member and former Chairman Peter Maude whilst on a break in Spain. Peter only stood down as League Chairman in June although he remained on the Board as a Director. He began his association with his club Wakefield FC in the early seventies when they were still known as Emley after moving in to the area and became Club President in 1983, a role he

occupied during the club’s most successful era as they contested the FA Vase Final at Wembley in 1988, won promotion to the UniBond League

twelve months later and took on the might of West Ham United in the 3rd Round Proper of the FA Cup in 1998 before losing 2-1. Peter was elected to the Northern Premier League’s LMC in 1992 but, being a man of uncomplicated principles, famously resigned his position in 1999 in protest at the political issues surrounding the FA ordering the Northern Premier League, under the threat of the removal of the sanction to allow the League to operate, to accept Barrow AFC as a member after that club had had their membership of the Conference terminated. He was persuaded to return to the League’s Board in 2001 and was elected Chairman some eighteen months later, a position he held with distinction.

His tenure as Chairman was not an easy one as during his term of office the game at this level underwent tumultuous change starting with the Conference taking the League’s best fourteen clubs to form their North and South Divisions. Then it was the turn of the Northern Premier League itself to expand to three Divisions and it fell to Peter’s unique skills as an arbiter to guide the League through quite a stormy political period. However, not satisfied with his success in seeing those two massive changes take place without any unacceptable disruption, Peter wasn’t finished with reorganisation and two years ago to the month he had the strength of vision to start the League on the path to succession planning and modernisation.

The League sends its heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Peter’s daughter Karen who has had the unenviable duty of flying out to Spain to bring him home.

St. Helens Town AFC – Hall of Fame: John Quinn and Geoff Nulty

John Quinn was born in St. Helens on 30th May

1938 and played for St. Theresa’s FC in Sutton

Manor before signing for St. Helens Town at the

same time as John Connelly in 1956. An outside

left or half-back, he played a number of games for

Town before moving to Lancashire Combination

rivals Prescot Cables and it was from Hope Street

that he signed professional for Sheffield

Wednesday on 29th April 1959.

Quinn went on to make his debut for Wednesday

against Luton Town on 26th September 1959 and

he scored 20 goals in 174 league games for the Hillsborough club. He

toured with the Army XI in 1962 and appeared at no. 11 for

Wednesday in the FA Cup Final against Everton in 1966, when the

Owls lost 3-2 after going two goals up. He was transferred to

neighbours Rotherham United in November 1967, then managed by

Tommy Docherty, where he was appointed captain. He scored 7 goals

in 114 league games during a 5-year spell at Millmoor, before taking

up the player-coach position at Halifax Town in

July 1972. When George Mulhall resigned in

September 1974, Quinn became caretaker

manager and was appointed full manager until

Alan Ball Senior took over in February 1976. By

the time he retired from league football, he had

played 92 times (1 goal) for Halifax.

On leaving The Shay, John played for Worksop

Town and also opened a sportswear business in

the shadows of Hillsborough, which he ran

successfully for many years. He also set up

“Johnny Quinn’s All Stars” which played charity

football games raising large sums of money for

various causes up to three years ago. Ex-players such as Emlyn

Hughes and Mel Sterland turned out on several occasions.

Geoffrey Owen Nulty was born in Prescot on 13th February 1949 and

signed for Town in 1965, making his debut against Barrow Reserves at

All Our Yesterdays



Holker Street. In two short years, he became

the youngest captain in Town’s history before he

was spotted by Stoke City scouts. His career

took off when transferred to Burnley in 1968,

where he scored 20 goals in 130 games. Out of

favour at Turf Moor, Geoff moved to Newcastle

United under manager Gordon Lee in 1974,

making 101 appearances (11 goals) before re-

joining Lee at Everton for a fee of £40,000 in

1978.

Nulty made only 27 league appearances with

The Toffees, scoring twice, before his playing

career

came to an abrupt end following

a poor tackle by Liverpool’s

Jimmy Case in the Merseyside

derby on 1st March 1980, the

same day the legendary Dixie

Dean collapsed and died at

Goodison Park. However,

returning to fitness, Geoff Nulty

was appointed assistant

manager by Gordon Lee and

made significant contributions

up to the time Howard Kendall

took over the reins. He later

followed Lee to Preston North

End in the same capacity.

A robust defender, he obtained

a degree in Social Sciences with

the Open University, studying

during his playing days.

Saints Alive . . . While on the operating table following a heart by-pass, a middle-aged woman has a near-death experience. She asks God if this is the end, but He assures her that she has another twenty years to live. After recovering, the woman decides to make the most of the long life ahead, and treats herself to a facelift, liposuction, a tummy tuck and breast implants.

Following all this radical surgery, she visits the hospital salon for a change of hairstyle and colour, then slips into a new wardrobe of clothes and heads off home. She is waiting for a taxi outside the hospital when lightning strikes and kills her

outright. On meeting God for the second time, she vents her anger. “Why did you say I had another twenty years to live, then do this?” she demands. “Sorry,” replies God. “I didn’t recognise you.” A guy is on his deathbed, with his wife maintaining a vigil by his side. As she holds his fragile hand, talking to him with tears running down her face, he rouses from his slumber. He looks up and his pale lips begin to move slightly. “My dearest darling,” he whispers. “Hush, my love,” she says, gently. “You

don’t have to talk, just rest.” But he is insistent. “I have something I must confess to you,” he says in a tired voice. “There’s nothing you need to confess,” his weeping wife reassures him. “Everything’s all right. Go to sleep.” “No, no, I have this terrible secret I’ve been carrying for years, and I must get it off my chest to die in peace,” he persists. “I slept with both your sisters, your best friend, and your mother.” His wife smiles, and whispers, “I know, dear - that’s why I poisoned you.” A duck waddles into a pub and heads straight over to the bar. “Do you have any bread?” he asks the barman. “I’m sorry, we don’t sell bread,” replies the barman. “Do you have any bread?” repeats the duck. “No, I just told you,” says the barman, somewhat irritated. “We don’t have any bread.” The duck

pauses for a moment. “All right then,” he says. “Do you have any bread?” At this point the barman loses his patience completely, leans over the bar, red-faced with anger, and glowers at the duck. “Look here, you stupid little bird - we don’t have any bread, and if you ask me one more time I’m going to nail your beak to this bar!” The duck considers this for a while. “Do you have any nails?” he asks. “NO,” bellows the barman. “In that case,” continues the duck. “Do you have any bread?”
