FROM THE DESK OF, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A.,S.T.L., RECTOR

The symptoms of America’s decline are all around us: abor on on demand, the shrinking of liberty and the growth of the state, a pagan popular culture, the de-struc on of families and free markets, and the reduc on of science to pe y pop-technology. Few, if any, have sought to explain the origin of all these problems at once. In Catholic Republic, Timothy Gordon argues that America’s premature withering could have been avoid-ed if only the founders had fully incorporated into the new republic the Catholic natural law. The an -Catholic bias of 18th Century America kept our Protestant and Enlightenment forefathers from ad-mi ng their dependence upon the ideas of Aristotle, St. Thomas Aquinas, and the early Jesuits. In Catholic Re-public, Gordon unpacks our na on’s complicated history of repudia ng, yet borrowing, the Catholic ideas about poli cs and nature, which turn out to be indispensable to our—and all republics. (From a review on “A Good Read” blog). One of the more amazing take-aways from this upcom-ing class taught “live” by the author, Timothy Gordon, will be the connec on between America’s Founding Fa-thers and St. Robert Bellarmine. Bellarmine’s greatest claim to fame just might be as the guy who tried to change Galileo’s mind when Galileo was proposing his theories about the movements of celes al objects. By the way, Galileo’s ideas, for the most part, were the same ideas that were proposed by the Polish astrono-mer Copernicus before him. But that’s a ma er for an-other me. Gordon will let us in on the great insight that so many of the great ideas upon which our United States were founded were “borrowed” or, as Gordon phrases it, “plagiarized” by none other than Madison, Jefferson, Adams, Hamilton, and others. The beauty of a Catholic mindset is the desire to always ask, “And where did so and so get his training, and who influenced him?” A Catholic historical mind always wants to know what came before this or that (i.e. the founding of America)? And this is one of the great handicaps of the Protestant mind, i.e., the disregard of world history before the “Reforma on” and/or the Founding Fathers of America. I encourage everyone to jump in on this specially dis-

counted online adult educa on opportunity ($100 for the 14 Tuesdays), but I especially encourage those who aren’t familiar with American history to register. One of the handicaps our society labors under is the fact the many Catholic immigrants don’t feel that this is their “homeland.” If America is to turn the corner and begin a real “reform,” Catholics of all na onali es must be-come patrio c. You have probably heard me say regard-ing parishioner status, “It’s ok to be a member of two parishes, because of certain circumstances.” So this class will help one feel it’s ok to consider your roots have two homelands. Twenty-second Ordinary Sunday

Dona ons Regular dona ons to our Church should be made to St. James at Sag Bridge Mission. This is true for weekly envelopes and monthly maintenance dona-

ons. A percentage of all this money goes to the Archdiocese. These funds are vital to running our church: covering staff, facili es, grounds, and all ongoing expenses. Dona ons to the newly formed lay-led group focused on maintaining faithfulness to Our Mani-festo, should be made out to “St. James Catholic Mission Society.” Please ensure “Society” is indi-cated.

Thank you for your generosity!
